How much weight can IKEA Sektion wall cabinets hold

Ha! As if they are going to take on liability by publishing weight limits. I have searched and read IKEA forums and such, but there is no info that I can find. Was hoping someone with real life experience could just offer a "nothing to worry about" or "yeah, maybe don't store every bottle of liquid you own in there."

I am not exactly sure what you are describing with your first incorrect installation. If you damaged the cabinets in some way then you may have to reinforce accordingly.

However, when properly installed… about 600lbs. You have liability backwards, they would absolutely be liable for the cabinets failing if they didn’t meet reasonable industry standards.

Is a lot an answer? Presuming you didn’t damage the cabinets they will hold a lot. I’ve had three ikea kitchens, a couple offices, and my laundry room.

I'd be more concerend about the self tapping screw into the metal studs. Did you use the IKEA hanging rail and hit every stud with a mounting point? (that would have been my go to) I think what I am hearing is that you used the brackets at the upper corners and used a single self tapping screw in each right angle bracket. So 4 self tapping sheetmetal screws are holding up your cabinets. Assuming they are good quality they probably won't sheer? Do you use washers? That's a pretty large hole in the mounting bracket. Perhaps post a picture because after installing a boatload of IKEA cabs, it doesn't necessarily sound like you used any of their normal mounting methods.

How do you know the spacing hit studs? It would be odd spacing for the center 2 to each land on a stud.

I'd say the least of your worries is the bracket attaching to the cabinet perpendicular to the wall. THOSE screws are sized to do that work.

I wouldn't worry.

Sorry, yes, I should have elaborated on how they were mounted on the wall since no one can answer a question without full understanding of how my house was constructed. (kidding... sorta)

The installer used the IKEA mounting rail and put screws in every stud behind the 60" run using the metal washer things that came with the mounting rail. As I said, I am not worried about them coming out of the wall.

bry - I didn't have a "first incorrect installation." I assembled the cabinet boxes, realized I used the wrong holes on the metal L bracket, then backed out the screws and reinserted them. This is far from my first rodeo assembling IKEA furniture.

HALLETT - Yes, 'a lot' is an answer and I suspected I was worrying about nothing, but thought someone here might reassure me. I've had IKEA cabinets before but never two suspended from the wall with no other supports on either side. Thank you.

Just to reiterate. 600 lbs is pretty much what wall cabinets are expected to hold and IKEA will meet that.

I am not sure why you mentioned installing the screws in the wrong hole if we were not supposed to use that information. I thought maybe the wrong holes in the metal bracket meant that you created additional holes in the cabinet and if that was the case it could be problematic. I apologize for misunderstanding.

Oh you just used the wrong hole in the mounting bracket. Have no fear. Will have no effect on the cabinet at all. Presuming the mounting rail is throughly attached to the studs (which you assure us it is) load it up.
