advice on log cabin kitchen Reno - backsplash and counters

Hello! I just purchased a log cabin and really love the beautiful hickorth cabinets that are there but to update the kitchen (house built 2007) I’m thinking to either hone the black granite that is there or replace with a lighter color (depending ok price). For backsplash I’m thinking of a cream color (and extending up the walls). I’m also thinking of removing one set of cabinets to the right of the sink and replacing with open shelving. First two photos are from real estate photos. Last two photos an are me partially moved in.

Lovely kitchen. Love the hickory cabinets. Sometimes hickory can be really stripey and busy but yours are not.

We live in a log cabin. We chose to go with the small 4 inch splash as the walls are log and we did not want to cover them with tile. Counters are leathered steel gray.

If I had your kitchen I would remove the tile and would either go with a green tile if you are set on tiling or paint the area the same green as the rest of the walls. I would ditch the wine rack and install a microwave. I would get new pendants. The hardware looks nice but you could get new if there is something out there you like better. I would keep the counters but that is personal choice. I like contrast.

I'd not bother honing the existing. The only good way is removal to a fabricator where you will have seam issues and possible breakage and more. If you want soapstone, it's a lovely choice , I would not do a light counter.

Change the pendants, ditch the backsplash, change the cabinet hardware if you like. Add some colorful vintage runners........and live with the granite a bit. You can always make a change, you just bought it.

( That's quite a suite of blinding white counter top appliance?! )

As Jan Moyer suggest soapstone would be a lovely choice to replace your existing countertops. As it is now the black countertops are too shiny to go well with the plethora of wood. If the cabinets are structurally up to it concrete might be another good choice.

Thank you. I would go Jet Mist over Soapstone but I do like the look and yes have already ordered new lighting. Hoping to brighting it up a bit with lighter colors. If I don't go cream, I would go blue before staying with the green.

Allow me to clarify - JetMist honed over soapstone. Or a honed quartz. I went to a stone yard yesterday and also saw a beautiful blue river piece. lol. I could really get lost in the countertop stuff.

Congrats on your beautiful purchase - so exciting! I'm another who would stick with the counters for now, although I love @vinmarks gorgeous kitchen. Since you have a fun collection of cream colored Smeg appliances, it might be nice to do another color for a backsplash. I'm partial to a soft sage green (think of bringing in colors from the outside) but I think you could go in many directions, probably something without too much variation so it doesn't compete with anything else. (If you like the green idea, look for pictures of @darbuka's kitchen with stained cabinets, soapstone, and beautiful green backsplash. There are some pics in this thread.)

You don't have to do a dark color. You could choose to do a black granite, but you could also look at creamy white or grey. Please see these designs for more ideas:
