Need advice on decorating small space with exposed concrete

last month

Hi everyone

I am struggling with my small space. It is 9 ft 7 inches by 20 feet total for the kitchen and living room. I don’t know about the black furniture with the concrete walls? In terms of storage I need the furniture to have space to store linens and kitchen items that don’t fit in the cupboards. I also don’t know about the rug and other items. Any advice is greatly appreciated in terms of items I should get rid of or colours I may incorporate. Thank you so much in advance!

Thankfully you are working with a great sofa and blonde floors. I agree with others, restrict the color pallete to light warm whites, taupes and beiges. Play with textures in your rugs, curtains and pillows. (Linen, velvet, boucle, shags) Add more baskets and lamps with soft light. Add alot more greenery. If you cannot paint the black console you could cover it with a light fabric like a large sheet or curtain and add pots and plats on top.

You do not have to have a window to hang curtains...if you want to break up the concrete walls. You can also hang rugs vertically. It would look nice against the concrete.

Your space is a 'loft style'. Your formal furnishings will work better in the space with some 'breathing room' around each piece.

@teamaltese thank you so much for this suggestion - I am loving the inspiration from warm minimalism and never knew this term before!

@BeverlyFLADeziner love the photos! I think i may get rid of the black furniture to be honest i was never in love with it!

Love the raw concrete. I think black is a perfect accent to punctuate the neutral space. I might not have both black pieces right next to each other. And I'd hang the mirror above it so the wall peeks through in between. Add a few pillows to the sofa with some black in them and it will instantly bridge the room.

Since I don't see the entire wall on the right, I don't know why the credenza cannot be moved further to the right. However I would not leave the tall black cabinet next to the black credenza so below I show it on the other end of the sofa near the windows.

Hi @lisedv thank you for this idea i will try it. To the right of the credenza is a hallway going to the entry. i am struggling a bit with storage. i considered replacing the credenza with tall closed bookcases but i dont know if that will be too much in a small space

The mirror and mired cabinet front do not reflect anything of interest. The black is so harsh in an already stark environment. When buying new storage pieces look at sleek wood cabinets to work with floors and warm up the space. Ikea has some good freestanding cabinets with minimalist details that still have some interest, often can be customized to your space. After you select new storage piece add an upholstered chair perpendicular to the sofa - instead of the desk chair and clear table. Some throw pillow and ottoman or coffee table in front of sofa should help with art and throw pillows to pull it all together. Thank you for letting me help “spend” your $$ 😉

Here a some ideas with a china cabinet.

    1. Find a used china cabinet and refinish with chalk paint (no prep if in good condition) and a matte varnish. You can also use wallpaper for the backing./

    2. Ikea's Billy Bookcase, only 12 inches deep and can be extra tall with an additional top cabinet.
