Looking for design ideas!

We do not want to replace the granite- just so expensive and it actually conceals things on tbe counter very well. We love the idea of a copper hood, greige or cream cabinets, new backsplash and new hardware. thoughts? ChatGPT inspired photo also uploaded.

Painting your cabinets will not end up and lovely as the AI wood finish shown.

I don't get the copper hood if you're trying to move away from the Mediterranean style of the kitchen.

I would select copper lights and accents before I would commit to the copper hood.

Have you considered sage green combined with your existing wood finish? That could be quite unique with your countertops.

how strong is the desire to paint the cabinets ? I would want a more refreshed backsplash no matter what so do that first. Can you pry off that dentil molding strip from the upper cab trim and the hood areas too. ? generally any of the molding removal from the hood would be worth it. those tiles on the hood could be painted as a preface to a new look , possibly leaving the cabinets. they are attractive cabinets ...

I'd get some artisan input on custom options for the hood. the shape is nice and the keyhole opening in the wall is unique. it just needs someone to work with it. As you requested …”design ideas” huge potential there.

different colors /textures for the hood.

Changing your backsplash is also going to help reduce the visual weight of the space considerably. I actually like your cabinets with the counter stone. You might want to consider just painting the uppers. I’d love to see a ceramic tile backsplash that picks up on that paint color in a beautiful shape. This is Fireclay Tile in Feldspar, in a star and cross shape.

I think your cabinets are beautiful and they go so well with your counters and flooring. I think that choosing a light backsplash is going to be a great change. would be a great change

Lose the backsplash, lose the tile on the hood and simplify the trim. A nice soft white on the cabinets, upper AND lower, a new backsplash, which btw, you might be able to find your granite for that?

New hardware in a warm brass, you don't need copper.

Even all that WITHOUT painting the cabinets, would be lovely.

show the kitchen in its entirety.....please?All angles

I agree the stuff around the range is the issue and thta dated backsplash . If you think quartz is better than granite think again IMO quartz is always down grade from real stone . But a good clean up of the backspalsh and that hood will make huge difference in the space . I also would suggest make sure all the lighting is LED 4000K it will instantly make the space feel brighter. Painting cabinets is ahuge expence and wood never looks perfect painted . Your cabinets look quite nice so a good cleaning of those and the rest suggested will make the kitchen look much better . I do love copper but mare as an accent that can be changed and the style of the hood IMO is heavy looking but that rounded wall indent seems to drive the bus For me a close up of that shape and a nice clean line stainless hood would be my choice but I honestly have no idea of the rest of the space and home as to style.

Your wood has a lot of grain and I'd be concerned about it showing through a painted surface and not looking good. This is where chat GPT falls very short on reality! And, a really good paint job on these cabinets that is going to hold up over time might cost as much as new counters.

Get a new backsplash, paint the dentil molding and trim the same color as the walls. Get a new hood - all white. It is a very pretty white in there. I'd get a backsplash the same color white.

In any kitchen renovation there are a lot of things need to work together.

    1. Flooring (Often matches throughout the home)
    2. Cabinets
    3. Countertop
    4. Backsplash
    5. Wall Color
    6. Trim (Often matches throughout the home)
    7. Appliances

The one thing I have not seen mentioned in your plan is your flooring.

Your current wood cabinets work with your countertops and flooring. Your countertop is pretty versatile because it has lots of different colors and would work well with the cabinet color in your inspiration photo.

Your floors have a lot of pink tones. It will not work with your inspiration photo and work with the countertop only because the wood tone of the cabinets ties the two together.

More pictures of the kitchen are needed for best overall advice. Good suggestions so far - definitely don’t paint those cabinets until you have done the backsplash and hood. The ornate details of your cabinets will visually pop more once painted than they currently do with the wood stain. They will not look like the inspiration photo at all.

The green is in an interesting thought, but we have a ton of greenery outside the windows during spring/summer months, so i try to avoid using green tones in the house outside of the plants. i go toward blues and creams.

    WHOA!!!!!!!

Do not plan one thing in here.......

Until you draw /measure the whole space,

    That island in the middle?

    Should NOT even be there

Every wall, every inch. Include the breakfast, the hallway.....where you enter.. the space behind the raised breakfast bar and all of it.

You didn't want to hear that? Do it anyway: )?

gah! i use the island daily. there would be such a huge space otherwise?

  • last month

Just a note! If you keep the counter tops & change the cabinet color be very careful of the color! Your counter tops & flooring appear to have very little or no cool colors. Any color change should take this into account. Don’t use any color does not have a warm undertone. If using “white” it be a warm cream or similar. This is also true for the backsplash.
    That

Yes thank you!! The countertops have small bits of taupes and grays, but SO much yellow/brown

  • last month

Love your dog! I’d be inclined to paint just the uppers by the range to match the wall color, paint just the door to the pantry to match the wall color, replace the backsplash with something simple in the tones of the wall color as well. And of course hood redo. Otherwise you’re looking at a total redo and is that really worth it? And lean into mixing some yellow/beige tones into your decor (like see that one lonely pillow that’s beige on the sofa:). If you blend a bit more of that into the greys you have going it will all start to look more cohesive.

I think you need to stop and really think about the overall aesthetic you want for your home before you do anything more.

You have a lovely home with wood cabinets and floors and doors and trim that all work beautifully together with the creamy white walls. Your table looks great with the other wood tones. The chairs are cream and that works with the walls.

You say you like blues and creams, but you painted the island black, added a lot of black accents and light fixtures and a big gray sofa.

Now you are talking about painting the rest of the cabinets greige or taupe and you want to keep the gray and gold countertops.

You can't just keep changing things one at a time without a plan or you end up with things that don't work together.

If I were you I would keep the wood and add more cream and blue. I would Paint the island to match your walls. Pick a backsplash that is the color of your walls. In the dining room I would exchange the current art with something that incorporates blue creams and browns and get a coordinating area rug, a blue seat cushion and add a centerpiece with some blue. In the living room I would get add a snow leopard faux fur blanket and pillow and a cream and blue and brown area rug.

I inherited the house like this - we haven’t changed anything in 5 years of living there besides adding the art on the walls. Thank you for your input

I would 86 that island. It's just in the way. There's plenty of countertop space.

  • PRO

The OP said she uses the island daily, so it would be impractical to remove it. I had a small island in my kitchen with narrow clearances, and although I liked it at first, it became apparent that it was cramped. If I had just removed it, that wouldn't have solved the problem. So I waited until I could do a complete renovation and change the layout.

This kitchen seems to work for her, but I would reconsider spending a lot of $$ on cosmetics. It might be more financially prudent to save up for a better layout.

I like the cream subway tile and hood you posted yesterday

  • last month

Lots of good advice already - I like the simpler hood and cream backsplash that was posted, and I would also absolutely get rid of all the harsh bare bulb lighting and add something softer and more refined

  • last month
    last modified: last month

You are getting good advice with simple creamy wall/hood colors and not painting the cabinets. I'd paint the island a lovely chambray blue or creamy white instead of the black, and I have no problem with the island's size or placement. It appears to have good clearance from range and is in a useful spot. Call me crazy, but I'd think about deleting the peninsula with two black stools at it! That would leave you with a classic L shaped kitchen with island, plenty of cabinetry still, and a much more open/less walled in kitchen space with better flow through the home. A couple seats at the island would now become a possibility, without crowding the walkway behind the sofa, and the wall spot where the peninsula was could house a bookshelf, coffee bar, have room for a console table against the sofa back, maybe even scoot the sofa back a bit and get room for more seating in the living room area, etc.

  • last month

Changing the backsplash to a creamy ivory tile will be a HUGE change. I agree the dark island doesn’t seem to help the situation, so consider a light blue or the same color as your walls. Adding gold toned hardware will bring some shine into the room.

Just doing these small changes could give you a lighter feeling in the kitchen. Then see if you need to do more.

  • last month

That’s a beautiful, big kitchen. The main dilemma seems to be toning down that heavy Mediterranean vibe that clashes with the rest of your look. White subway tile would work.

The gray sofa and rug don’t work with the warm tones in the kitchen. Bring in some warm accents in a throw, pillows and other accents.

Thanks Amanda and RedRyder! We are couch shopping now. Any colors that would work besides very light?

  • PRO
    last month

Any dark green for the sofa would work well. But you might want to get the rug first--something with warm colors--green/tan/orange/burgundy--and then select a color from the rug.

  • last month

I agree you need to fall in love with a rug and then choose a sofa. Your house is neutral, with warm floors and a lot of wood. Here are just some pretty rugs to consider.
Something with a lot of colors gives you options for the new sofa.

  • last month

    All of these could work.

    More.

And those were just on Wayfair.

I think rugs are harder to find, so start there.

And while couch shopping make sure TO SIT ON THEM! Nothing is more disappointing than buying a pretty couch that isn’t comfortable after an hour.
