How to Add Crown Molding

I have linen crown molding with a different profile matching the cabinets, but the white crown on the left and right matches the rest of the house. Hard to tell, but the cabinets on the left are about an inch set back from the wall. We want to wrap the beam to give an exposed beam look, and want to put a builtin green range hood between the cabinets on the right (see second image for their mockup).

Trying to figure out which portions to put white vs linen molding on, and how to join the molding where they’d meet (if necessary). I think I lean towards omitting the molding on the exposed beam, unless we do the linen molding behind the beam and the white molding in the front part of the room? But then the white molding wouldn’t match the cabinets beneath it. Whatever advice or opinions you may have would be appreciated!

Buy new crown that matches what's in the rest of the house for the kitchen. Paint it all, and any other trim in the house to match the cabinets.

And for your next project, think through the design and solve problems before you start :)

Where’s the fun in what you propose? 😊 Koko - I’m not sure I can visualize or get what you’re explaining - but, if I do understand correctly, seems the easiest solution is to omit the molding on the beam as you’re thinking. Seems enough separation between the two styles to make the difference less noticeable. You have both a color & style difference but neither are obvious without a side by side comparison. Avoid the comparison point.

in your case... I would finish the ceiling crown to match the other ceiling crown.

and make a trim crown to the ceiling as if to fininsh off the top of the cabinet.

Non-expert here. How about removing the molding at the top of the cabinets. Then you could run the unobstructed ceiling molding around the room including on the beam. The molding at the top of the cabinets leave a very small gap between it and the ceiling and clashes with the ceiling molding. Also, have you considered running the tile next to the door up to the molding? The tile is pretty busy; maybe a simpler range hood would be better.

I think we're leaning towards buying new matching crown and painting all trim to match - we need to repaint the trim in the house anyways. Thanks!
