double edge countertop

Hi, I’m just about ready to start a kitchen renovation, painting my cherry beaded inset kitchen cabinets a soft off White with Matarazzo extra countertops.
I was considering a double edge on my island. I was thinking of an ogee on top of an eased edge. I was planning on doing his dad on the remaining kitchen counters. Are double edged in ogee doing out of style?

You want this below? You looove cleaning?

Can't stop you, but I would be no thanks, no matter how traditional I may be. A goo collector, begging a finger wrapped in a rag soaked with cleaning agent and wrung out. I shall pass!!

Show your kitchen all angles, in it's current condition, and see if you can change my mind?

You should do that ( show and tell ) whether or not you want to change my mind...: )

As to style....I won't lie. Few if any still do that edge, and it really only lends itself well to granite- a surface a bit overtaken by quartz and quartzite. In quartzite, that would be Taj Mahal, and it is a bit brittle for that application.

    ^^

I phone google typo, and we know what you meant. : ) Don't bother. Just show the kitchen. As to whether you planned island only, or island and perimeter doesn't matter. What matters is the question is it dated, or is it just that you love the edge and what matters most is?

The layout of this kitchen and whether you love alll enough about it to paint, update and CHANGE the tops. Edges are the least of the question.

That seems like a fussy detail to me. We rarely see it in homes any more and don't use it i our home designs.

Your cabinets are a bitof a dated style so we need to see the spac e. I like a very simple eased edge but I would need to see the space . I certainly would not mix 2 different styles

In short…an ogee edge isn’t going out of style, it’s been out of style for 15 years, at least. Fussy details of any kind in a kitchen, have been out of fashion for quite a while. That’s why the simple lines of Shaker cabinets, and an eased edge for countertops are favored. And, why busy mosaic tiled backsplashes are no longer seen.

Is this the style of the cherry cabinets you plan to paint? Will it be professionally sprayed?

A double edge is a dirt collector. It's not something we typically do any more.

Am I losing it? : ) Didn't I post the same ogee picture? lol first comment....asking for a friend

    To the op

All kidding aside, post the kitchen, if you feel brave. A kitchen can be very deserving of updates, and sometimes is not as deserving as we believe; is not always the value we ascribe to the update. That may or may not be your case! Hard to say minus pictures.

When/if you do post pictures? Post an inspo of your dream kitchen. Does the update bring you close? Or is it a Band Aid take you $$$$$$ further from what you truly want? What if the cherry need not be painted? Lots of questions, right?

Realize all this is not what you asked, you asked on a a counter edge........the very least important aspect, just for this moment?

Absolutely NO to that fussy dirtcatcher, or painting cherry cabinets. Cherry is back again, and will be the next hot thing because no one can afford the rift sawn white oak anymore after they deplete the forests of it.

No to a double or ogee edge. Dated, harder to clean, chip more easily and cost a lot more than a simple eased edge.

I don't think this is a detail anyone will really notice, and it looks like it would chip more easily.

I understand natural woods are coming back, but my cherry is not stained and what is considered a current color. It’s 25 years old, has seen every holiday of every year spent in my home with multiple children and multiple dogs and pets. It’s in dire need of an update.
The double edge countertop and ogee is no longer a choice!

Get a price on painting or if DIY plan to spend a great deal of time as the prep work is the most time consuming and most important part of the project. A good paint job on cabinets is not inexpensive.

My kitchen is 15 years old and I love my ogee edge. I would do it again....but it definitely fits the vibe of my house (Vintage 1920s English). I have it in my bathroom too. Having said that.....we haven't sold the double (more intricate) ogee edges in years at my shop. The basic ogee still sells well though.

Ps: Not one chip on my 15 year old ogee edge that went thru an 8 year old son growing up with it. We also use cast iron cookware a lot. I'm actually surprised we don't have any. LOL. I think my edge is a lot less prone to chipping than eased or even 1/4roundover.

Right after my marble tile b/s installed. I know you're not supposed to mix marble and quartz but I took a risk. Still looks great to me. The kitchen seems timeless in my old 1925 home.

Shame to paint cherry cabinets, unless in very bad shape.

Ogee and double ogee is an ornate, detailed look, if your cabinets and pulls and kitchen in general have significant detail then it could look good, if everything is plain then it might not.

Sorry for the delay in reply. My twins both had babies, making me a new grandma!

These are images of my kitchen taken before we started our renovation. They are custom beaded inset cabinets. They are solid but have taken a beating over 25 years!
We opened the wall to the dining and family room. We maintain a formal Lexington dining table in the dining area.

I’m considering Carrara marble or Matarazzo countertops. Off-white (professionally sprayed) cabinets and stainless appliances with Champagne bronze hardware.

I think a pencil edge or eased edge are timeless and no sharp edges so you won’ t get hurt while doing dad on the countertop 😉

I would not paint those cabinets. Get them refinished and freshened up.

    Get new counters and backsplash.

    More/better recessed lights.

Stainless appliances and new stainless hood.

They look to be in great condition. I wouldn’t paint either.

Believe me, they are not in great condition. The bases have been beat up terribly. The area is around all the handles are worn.
It would be a fortunate to have them refinished as they’re beaded inset.
I’m getting either marble or dolomite countertops and will likely run it up the wall as a backsplash.
The room doesn’t get any natural lights since we have a large screened in porch off the back of the kitchen with large shade trees. It needs brightened up.
