One thing I didn't see in the article is the type of primer. Melamine is plastic so normal wall primer isn't going to stick. Most paint companies sell a very sticky primer so be sure to ask for that in the paint store. Even then, don't expect it to as strong as a factory finish - you might need to touch up nicks occasionally.
