I think the granite looks a bit darker in person. The black is more dominant, as opposed to how it look here when it's really well lit.

What are the colours of your floors? A simple off-white tile (subway or not...your choice) or a warmer natural stone colour (helps give the cherry a reason for being so "red") could help pull this together.

Right now your cabinets are very warm/pinkish yet your counter top is cold. We need to pull these together in one item. The backsplash in an area that should help your colour choices "shake hands and play nice". I would stay away from too much gray. The cabinets need something to connect with (assuming your flooring doesn't do it).

I like the idea of a white/slightly off white simple backsplash too, depending on your floors. I actually like blacks/grays/greens/blues very much with cherry cabinets. Your paint color is not a bad direction (a bit too strong of a green). I'd choose a soft gray with just a hint of blue or green.

You mention you don;t want traditional but your cabinets are traditional. What style do you want? What color will you do the walls? Do you have a photo of your floors? Without knowing these I would suggest you use the same granite for backsplash as your contertop.

Thanks everyone! We haven't redone the floors yet. They are currently standard parquet. See image below. I'll take another kitchen shot tonight after I clean up (ha) to show the whole room. The cabinets are more traditional than we would have liked, but for several reasons they're what we ended up with. The house is a mid-century colonial and has modern elements, but it has many traditional elements as well. I think we were hoping to go a tiny bit less traditional with the backsplash, though nothing crazy, so that it ties in to the rest of the house.

It's a very nice kitchen. There is so much movement in the granite, I think you'll end up regretting it if you don't keep the backsplash very calm.
