RightArm teamed with Portland firm InSitu Architecture on this modern interpretation of a post-war Portland home. Located in the Concordia neighborhood of Northeast Portland, the Webster ADU takes as inspiration the main house on the site with its low profile and hipped roofline, but the similarities end there. The ADU is clad with a painted wood, open joint rain screen. Generous four-foot eaves provide protection at the NW and SE corners of the building. The interior is simple but well executed. The floor is polished concrete. Construction-grade fir plywood cabinets lend the space a rustic feel. The aluminum clad fir windows tie in with the cabinetry and the end-grain fir butcherblock counter. Floor to ceiling pocket doors separate the rooms. Colorful tile and paint add subdued interest to the kitchen and bath spaces Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the ADU is that which isn’t seen. Unique in design and structure, this building is a combination customized 3-bedroom home with a temperature-controlled, insulated high ceiling workspace. This home was designed for my clients need to live, work and play. He was interested in spending as much time in his shop as he was in his living room. The main level contains the master suite, a second bedroom and bath, living room and an open kitchen. A key design feature for the second level is a full width mezzanine. The mezzanine adds visual interest as well as valuable functionality. This upper level contains a bedroom, a full bathroom, an office space and a large common area.

The original room was just a screen room with a low flat ceiling constructed over decking. There was a door off to the side with a cumbersome staircase, another door leading to the rear yard and a slider leading into the house. Since the room was all screens it could not really be utilized all four seasons. Another issue, bugs would come in through the decking, the screens and the space under the two screen doors. To create a space that can be utilized all year round we rebuilt the walls, raised the ceiling, added insulation, installed a combination of picture and casement windows and a 12' slider along the deck wall. For the underneath we installed insulation and a new wood look vinyl floor. The space can now be comfortably utilized most of the year.

This 1890 rowhouse had been renovated over time, most recently in the 70s. Our clients wanted to renovate every floor. The floors and walls were out of level, and most of the systems were old. We gutted the structure to the studs, leveled and reframed the walls and floors, added insulation and updated the plumbing, electrical and HVAC. Once the structural and systems work was complete, our crew installed a new expanded kitchen, updated all the bathrooms, and updated the basement. Reconfiguring the first floor plan involved taking down the wall between the kitchen and dining room to create one large entertaining space. To bring more natural light and provide sight lines from the front to the back of the rowhouse, we added new windows to the back wall and moved the opening to the other side as a full-light door. Kitchen features include: • Cabinetry that extends to the ceiling to maximize storage • Large island with seating for four • Painting that imitates the pattern of the ceiling we uncovered during the renovation • Buffet cabinetry in the dining room with a built-in wine cooler HDBros

An unused small home office was transformed into haven in a suburban Texas home. For this space, function came first and the aesthetics were layered in. If a project does not meet its intended purpose, it is not successful. Incorporating the couples love of Argentina, bottle count, display appeal, case storage, and the ability to maintain a 55-degree environment were all design considerations. Specialized craftsman were hired to help with cooling, insulation, placement of the condenser, etc. An expert carpenter contributed his expert skills and knack for creating storage solutions. Strong beams were used to highlight the tiled ceiling and create an authentic grotto look. Pebble flooring adds to the Old World feel. Stone walls and herringbone ceiling lend an aged element. A medallion carefully selected from a little known source in Argentina is the centerpiece of the room; its pattern and color blends with the rest of the home’s decor and the inlaid glass tile adds shimmer. Double-paned iron and glass doors seal the room and create an entry of interest.

Our client wanted to upgrade their garage while also adding an art studio on the side. This included tearing down the existing structure and adding a new concrete slab where both the garage and studio could sit. We then framed, insulated, heated and powered the entire garage and studio. We added large windows along the front, side, and back of the art studio, so that it had a lot of natural light consistently lighting up the space. To finish it off, it has beautiful brown siding with a few black accents, such as the black door and the trim around the windows. It also has a lovely faux wood garage door which is a beautiful eye-catcher. An art studio attached to your garage? Who wouldn't want that!
