After some conceptual design concepts were assessed, we chose to keep this kitchen's existing footprint and expand the site lines into the rear dining space with a new drywall opening. We expanded the function of the kitchen by wrapping the peninsula around into the dining room with an additional pantry space for kitchen overflow storage. Each cabinet was well thought out for the homeowners use of the space to include functional storage accessories like plate divides, utensil pull-outs, and trash/recycle bins. Working with the designer, the homeowners found a beautiful balance of some contemporary aesthetics like the overall color scheme combined with some classic elements such as the detailed cabinetry and herringbone tile backsplash. One of our favorite details in the kitchen is the new tile floor that continues into the dining room. The wood texture plank tile adds depth and texture as well as contrasts nicely with the softer and refined finishes above. New Cambria quartz countertops, new cabinetry, herringbone tile backsplash, new tile floors, custom lighting, and new plumbing fixtures complete the space. The new transitional styled kitchen can grow with the family for many years to come. With a swap out of some furniture the whole space can transition between contemporary or traditional. In this late 60’s kitchen remodeled we opened up the space and added brand new custom cabinets, appliances, quartz counter tops and mix of porcelain and glass tile for a breath of fresh air. The adjacent unused dining area was enclosed to create a pantry with plenty of storage, and provided additional wall space for the refrigerator and coffee station (see before photos). A fresh coat of paint and the addition of new recessed and surface mount light fixtures lighten and brighten the contemporary Craftsman kitchen, nook and pantry.

Solid Wood Floors Solid floors are made with planks of solid wood, usually ¾ to 5/16” thick. Because they are solid, they can be sanded and refinished many times, giving them a long life span. They can be installed over a plywood subfloor at or above grade. They are not suitable for installation in basements. Engineered Wood Floors Engineered hardwoods are made with layers of wood veneers bonded together. The top layer is a finished wood that can be resanded a limited number of times depending on its thickness. Because it features multiple sublayers laid in opposing directions, it is more stable than solid hardwood and resists warping and damage from moisture better. For that reason engineered wood floors can be laid over concrete subfloors in addition to wood and are suitable for use in basements. Wood Species Color and Grain Hardwood floors are produced from the wood of many species of trees, each offering different qualities that affect their appearance and performance. Some woods such as oak have prominent grain patterns; others, like cherry, have very mild graining. Every variety of wood also has unique natural coloring that affects its finished color when stained. In addition, woods vary in their hardness, which affects how easily they will dent and scratch under regular use. In general, the harder the wood, the greater its scratch and dent resistance.
