Where Sophistication Meets Storage: The stylish pole barn is a seamless blend of function and fashion. With ample space for large vehicles or RV storage, the barn stands as a proud, elegant addition to the property, while the surrounding greenery emphasizes its serene, rural setting.

Middlefork was retained to update and revitalize this North Shore home to a family of six. The primary goal of this project was to update and expand the home's small, eat-in kitchen. The existing space was gutted and a 1,500-square-foot addition was built to house a gourmet kitchen, connected breakfast room, fireside seating, butler's pantry, and a small office. The family desired nice, timeless spaces that were also durable and family-friendly. As such, great consideration was given to the interior finishes. The 10' kitchen island, for instance, is a solid slab of white velvet quartzite, selected for its ability to withstand mustard, ketchup and finger-paint. There are shorter, walnut extensions off either end of the island that support the children's involvement in meal preparation and crafts. Low-maintenance Atlantic Blue Stone was selected for the perimeter counters. The scope of this phase grew to include re-trimming the front façade and entry to emphasize the Georgian detailing of the home. In addition, the balance of the first floor was gutted; existing plumbing and electrical systems were updated; all windows were replaced; two powder rooms were updated; a low-voltage distribution system for HDTV and audio was added; and, the interior of the home was re-trimmed. Solution: The design team reimagined the space by introducing updated finishes, distinctive tile layouts, wallpaper, and statement lighting to elevate the bathroom while working within the existing layout. The project was executed entirely remotely, demonstrating a seamless virtual design process. This collection consists of armchair, foot rest, rocking armchair, 2 or 3 seats sofa and chaise lounge. Main characteristic of this collection lies in its emphasized spherical side of each piece in the collection, which is made from solid wood, additional graced with widened parts in the back or seat. These parts are made from knotted segments of tree trunk, where rings have spiral form and resemble human eye, hence the name of the whole collection. Also, ‘eye’ gives exceptional ergonomics to each piece, as the upholstered part follows their shape. Additional aesthetics and 3 D effect can be seen in slightly conical legs which form a conical shape. We reconfigured the mud/laundry room, as well as the space adjacent to it and the kitchen, to allow for a more natural flow between kitchen, dining, and living. The space that previously housed the kitchen was turned into a gallery, where the homeowners can sit and enjoy their morning coffee while viewing the golf course. The flush, walnut cabinetry in this kitchen features grain matching. With this design technique, a piece of wood is strategically cut, emphasizing a repeating pattern within the grain.

Set in Hancock Park, a historic residential enclave in central Los Angeles, the St. Andrews Accessory Dwelling Unit is designed in concert with an addition to the main house. Richly colored, V-groove fiber cement panels provide a visual connection between the new two-story ADU and the existing 1916 craftsman bungalow. Yet, the ADU also expresses contemporary features through its distilled sculptural form. Clean lines and simple geometry emphasize the modern gestures while large windows and pocketing glass doors allow for plenty of natural light and connectivity to the exterior, producing a kind of courtyard in relation to the main home. The compact size required an efficient approach. Downstairs, a kitchenette and living space give definition to an open floor plan. The upper level is reserved for a full bathroom and bedroom with vaulted ceilings. Polished concrete, white oak, and black granite enrich the interiors. A primary suite addition to the main house blends seamlessly with the original. Hallway arches echo the original craftsman interior, connecting the existing living spaces to the lower addition which opens at ground level to the rear yard. Together, the ADU, main house, and a newly constructed patio with a steel trellis create an indoor/outdoor ensemble. Warm and inviting project results from the careful balance of historical and contemporary, minimalist and eclectic.

Lighting plays a vital role in modern kitchen design. We emphasize maximizing natural light through large windows and open floor plans, creating a bright and airy atmosphere. Additionally, we incorporate strategically placed modern lighting fixtures, such as pendant lights or recessed lighting, to enhance both functionality and ambiance.

Large 83" tall mirror adds drama to the room and emphasizes the two-story height. 5 x 8 area rug by Feizy anchors the furniture in the room.

Working through different design studies with the client, we identified the optimum layout and created space for an additional bedroom. Fusing old world details with contemporary living, we ensured the rehabilitation pays homage to its original detailing while expressing a bold narrative, delicately balanced within the original structural framework. Careful detailing of the structural elements ensured the work could proceed without affecting the unit below. Completed in 2014, this home now offers its young family the full urban experience of stylish San Francisco living.

When the owners of this 1908 bungalow in Platt Park approached us, they emphasized their love of the traditional features in their home, like existing built-ins, the sweet front porch, and the scale of the house within the neighborhood. They also noted that many pop-tops constructed in Denver seem to be out of place in style and totally disjointed from the original home, and they wanted to be sure the design of their second floor addition fit in with the neighborhood context gracefully. We couldn’t agree more. To create a space that met the needs of this growing family, we created a second-story addition reminiscent of a traditional Denver Square in scale and style over the original footprint. Toward the rear, we extended the footprint of the home to the South increasing the original 1600 square foot house to a total of 2,800 square feet, including meeting the needs of the homeowner for larger kitchen and living spaces. The resulting home with its 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms is a celebration of Denver tradition, while creating space that works for a modern family.

“Immediately upon seeing the space, I knew that we needed to create a narrative that allowed the design to control how you moved through the space,” reports Kimberly, senior interior designer. After surveying each room and learning a bit more about their personal style, we started with the living room remodel. It was clear that the couple wanted to infuse mid-century modern into the design plan. Sourcing the Room & Board Jasper Sofa with its narrow arms and tapered legs, it offered the mid-century look, with the modern comfort the clients are used to. Velvet accent pillows from West Elm and Crate & Barrel add pops of colors but also a subtle touch of luxury, while framed pictures from the couple’s honeymoon personalize the space. Moving to the dining room next, Kimberly decided to add a blue accent wall to emphasize the Horchow two piece Percussion framed art that was to be the focal point of the dining area. The Seno sideboard from Article perfectly accentuated the mid-century style the clients loved while providing much-needed storage space. The palette used throughout both rooms were very New York style, grays, blues, beiges, and whites, to add depth, Kimberly sourced decorative pieces in a mixture of different metals. “The artwork above their bureau in the bedroom is photographs that her father took,” Moving into the bedroom renovation, our designer made sure to continue to stick to the client’s style preference while once again creating a personalized, warm and comforting space by including the photographs taken by the client’s father. The Avery bed added texture and complimented the other colors in the room, while a hidden drawer at the foot pulls out for attached storage, which thrilled the clients. A deco-inspired Faceted mirror from West Elm was a perfect addition to the bedroom due to the illusion of space it provides. The result was a bedroom that was full of mid-century design, personality, and area so they can freely move around. The project resulted in the form of a layered mid-century modern design with touches of luxury but a space that can not only be lived in but serves as an extension of the people who live there. Our designer was able to take a very narrowly shaped Manhattan apartment and revamp it into a spacious home that is great for sophisticated entertaining or comfortably lazy nights in.
