Our clients needed more space for their family to eat, sleep, play and grow. Expansive views of backyard activities, a larger kitchen, and an open floor plan was important for our clients in their desire for a more comfortable and functional home. To expand the space and create an open floor plan, we moved the kitchen to the back of the house and created an addition that includes the kitchen, dining area, and living area. A mudroom was created in the existing kitchen footprint. On the second floor, the addition made way for a true master suite with a new bathroom and walk-in closet.

This Portland 1929 Tudor mix home was in need of a few luxury additions. Designed by architect Stuart Emmons of Emmons Architects and built by Hammer & Hand, additions to the home included a green roof, two-person shower, soaking tub, and a two-story addition with a new living room and art studio. The Bloomfield Hills Residence is a 10,400sf single-family home in Bloomfield Hills, MI, designed for a young family looking for unique architecture and meticulous interior design in their new home. MPdL Studio served as both design architect and architect of record for this home in which every detail was customized for the family's lifestyle, with high-end design and healthy living at its core. Our design paid particular attention to detailed brick work, glass walls, millwork, and cabinetry. The exterior is Endicott dark ironspot brick, stucco, cypress windows and trim, and slate roof. The interior materials include bluestone and walnut floors, knotty oak, and milk painted maple cabinetry. In addition to selecting all furnishings, light fixtures, table settings, and the curation of art work, MPdL Studio custom-designed key furniture. For example, the dining room contains a walnut wood hand-carved table that seats up to sixteen, while the bar area features a walnut butcher block counter and frosted bronze glass shelves. The wooden staircase in the entry features details that are all customized with unique alignment elements from the vertical seams to the treads on the ground, and the wood and metal handrails. Airy curtains line the walls and turn around corners, complementing the architecture of the space. The kitchen and family room were designed as an open space for an active family with ample storage, comfortable furniture, and views to the back yard which include an outdoor pool, cabana, and custom play structures for the children.

This home on the Eastern Shore of Maryland began as a modest 1927 home with a central hall plan. Renovations included reversing the kitchen and dining room layout , adding a large central island and hood to anchor the center of the kitchen. The island has a walnut counter encircling the working island and accommodates additional seating. The main sink looks out to the north with beautiful water views. The southwest bay window affords a seating area with built-in bookshelves adjoining the breakfast room while the one in the kitchen provides for the secondary sink and clean-up area. By capturing the additional depth in the bay window, a large TV is concealed below the countertop and can emerge with a press of a button or retract out of sight to enjoy views of the water. A separate butler's pantry and wine bar were designed adjoining the breakfast room. The original fireplace was retained and became the center of the large Breakfast Room. Wood paneling lines the Breakfast Room which helps to integrate the new kitchen and the adjoining spaces into a coherent whole, all accessible from the informal entry. We were asked to add a small sunroom off a beautiful 1960's living room. Our approach was to continue the lines of the living room out into the landscape. Opening up and glazing the walls on either side of the fireplace gave more presence to the Dale Chihuly piece mounted above while visually connecting to the garden and the new addition.
