In their third remodel with us, this young family wanted to update their craftsman bungalow kitchen. The existing kitchen already opened up into the dining room from one of our previous renovations. However, the kitchen still lacked adequate counter space and attractive, functional storage. This project started with an aesthetic compromise– he wanted a stainless steel kitchen, she wanted a more traditional style. The final result has modern lines and smooth surfaces, combined with natural variation and texture. Handmade ceramic tiles from North Prairie Tile add a touch of rustic warmth. The rift-sawn white-oak has a more subdued pattern than the usual plain sawn oak. Before the renovation, a free standing island added storage and counter space to the kitchen. This design added a built-in version of this makeshift solution. The new transitional cabinet is custom built to match the existing buffet in the dining room, and keeps dishes and tools out of sight. A continuous London Grey granite counter top provides enough work space to make cooking and entertaining easy. The dark unfinished space went mostly unused for three years, but once their kids reached the ideal age for use of a well-built basement, they moved ahead with their plan. “The old basement was dark and cold, and the kids came down and played, but they didn’t like it. The new space is like a whole other house, so we have this space for family game nights and for watching games or Super Bowl parties,” Chris said. My client purchased a wonderful brick mid-century modern home with great potential. The existing kitchen appliances were no longer functioning and outdated and the floor plan was tight , without adequate space for modern appliances. We relocated the refrigerator and opened up the cooking space, removed the island and incorporated a peninsula with an eating area, and created a tiny message center. The closet over the stairway was converted into a pantry for storage. Selecting Haas Cinnamon Shakertown Oak helped keep the feel of the mid-century ranch home. The owners of this 25-year old home always knew the existing kitchen needed help. The L shaped layout with a very small island did not make very good use of the space. Due to having two windows, five doorways and a sliding door, there wasn't adequate wall cabinet storage. so the challenge was to redesign the kitchen with more upper storage and enlarge the island. the client also wanted to add seating for three people or more and have a spacial place for entertaining. By modified the gallery kitchen layout, eliminating one window and relocating the appliances, a more functional and kitchen with larger island was possible. The cabinets along the bar area were reduced in depth to enable the island to be wider. A clean transitional design was accomplished by using cherry wood cabinets white quartz counter tops stainless steel appliances and glass tile with aluminum inserts. This kitchen now features a bi-level island with seating for four with a dedicated counter space for entertaining.

Can you believe that this space was once dark and dreary? With the help of adequate lighting and creamy white paint, we transformed this room into a British Colonial paradise. The neutral sofa and splashes of color enliven this space and well placed florals create drama to this elegant room.

We built this custom glass wine cube to separate 2 different areas of the basement. This cube has its own lighting system. The racks are floor to ceiling metal racks, situated in front of the tempered glass walls. The wine bottles are prominently displayed which can be seen from either side of the cube. In the back is a ductless split cooling system which will adequately cool the space and keep you wine properly chilled and for long term storage. This view looks into the wine cube from the home theatre.

This kitchen had not been renovated since the salt box colonial house was built in the 1960’s. The new owner felt it was time for a complete refresh with some traditional details and adding in the owner’s contemporary tastes. At initial observation, we determined the house had good bones; including high ceilings and abundant natural light from a double-hung window and three skylights overhead recently installed by our client. Mixing the homeowners desires required the skillful eyes of Cathy and Ed from Renovisions. The original kitchen had dark stained, worn cabinets, in-adequate lighting and a non-functional coat closet off the kitchen space. In order to achieve a true transitional look, Renovisions incorporated classic details with subtle, simple and cleaner line touches. For example, the backsplash mix of honed and polished 2” x 3” stone-look subway tile is outlined in brushed stainless steel strips creating an edgy feel, especially at the niche above the range. Removing the existing wall that shared the coat closet opened up the kitchen to allow adding an island for seating and entertaining guests. We chose natural maple, shaker style flat panel cabinetry with longer stainless steel pulls instead of knobs, keeping in line with the clients desire for a sleeker design. This kitchen had to be gutted to accommodate the new layout featuring an island with pull-out trash and recycling and deeper drawers for utensils. Spatial constraints were top of mind and incorporating a convection microwave above the slide-in range made the most sense. Our client was thrilled with the ability to bake, broil and microwave from GE’s advantium oven – how convenient! A custom pull-out cabinet was built for his extensive array of spices and oils. The sink base cabinet provides plenty of area for the large rectangular stainless steel sink, single-lever multi-sprayer faucet and matching filtered water dispenser faucet. The natural, yet sleek green soapstone countertop with distinct white veining created a dynamic visual and principal focal point for the now open space. While oak wood flooring existed in the entire first floor, as an added element of color and interest we installed multi-color slate-look porcelain tiles in the kitchen area. We also installed a fully programmable floor heating system for those chilly New England days. Overall, out client was thrilled with his Mission Transition.

This 1949 South Minneapolis home had an underutilized, unwelcoming basement with old, dark paneling in the family room, and an unfinished laundry, storage and work shop area. Headroom was at a premium because of low hanging duct work, plumbing and gas lines.Castle Building & Remodeling transformed this basement by creating a much more welcoming, well-lit and functional family room, with an added egress window, built-in storage units and a media area with a flat screen TV. Duct work and piping in the unfinished half of the basement was raised or consolidated to give adequate headroom for a bright and spacious new laundry area. A new 3/4 bath completes the package, along with a built-in linen cabinet in the finished hallway. Storage areas were consolidated in separate areas of the basement with their own access doors. The family now eagerly uses the basement space as a regular part of their home, no longer dreading the trip down to the ‘cellar’.

When buying the house, the homeowners loved the location, but needed to make the space more open and functional for their family. Having three young children, they wanted to make sure adequate sight lines were included between the kitchen and great room since they knew that’s where they would spend most of their time. The homeowners also wanted to update the space to match their modern design tastes. The home was a traditional design, but coming from New York City, these homeowners sought to bring a city vibe to their home while making it more functional for their needs. The opening between the great room and kitchen was enlarged by adding a 13’ beam to the home. The kitchen design was modified to get rid of an awkward and small pantry along with eliminating a window to allow for more cabinetry. The custom island includes a microwave, sink and dishwasher. Outlets were hidden under the upper cabinets to give the backsplash a clean look and feel. The home had two home offices, one of them was converted to a workout space. Custom millwork was completed to modernize the two-way fireplace. Additional hardwood flooring was added to the first floor, and all was refinished to match. New lighting was installed throughout the first floor as well. The small laundry room was reconfigured to allow more storage including adding a pocket door to save on real estate. Removing the kitchen pantry, gave the laundry more storage space for hanging laundry and storing supplies. All these remodeling decisions took place from afar while the homeowners still lived in NYC.

The existing kitchen of this traditional “5/4 and a door” Colonial home was too tight and lacked adequate storage for daily necessities. The kitchen was expanded to the rear a scant 8 feet – just enough to make it function for the family of six to all be in the space at the same time.

To remodel this first floor, we combined a small living room and small kitchen to form a more adequately sized eat in kitchen with plenty of space and a convenient coffee bar.
