Homeowner was having problems with too much sunlight coming through their front windows, causing the room to be incredibly hot and unusable in the summer, and also fading and damaging their furniture. They had tried curtains, shades, even thick blankets over the windows. To alleviate the problem, we installed sun control film directly to the existing windows, cutting 99% of UV, 97% of infrared, and 60% of the heat, all while allowing plenty of light into the room and avoiding the high cost of full window replacement! (The center and right window have the film, the left one does not; as you can see, there is very little difference in appearance) Photo by Robert Citrone

Falcon House is located on Falcon Ridge Road, which winds along a steeply inclined ridge in a stretch of foothills within Carmel Valley in Monterey County. An old lichen covered barn and split rail, cedar fences characterize this area known as Markham Ranch, and contrast sharply with the preponderance of sprawling, large estate-style homes, many more at-home in the Italian countryside than any landscape of California.
Designed for a young family, Falcon House responds to the family’s desire to live a more modest lifestyle, eschewing overt displays of extravagance for an intimate and deferential relation to nature.
The 3,200-square-foot residence occupies a difficult portion of the northern slope of a hillside, overlooking a verdant valley and oriented toward Castle Rock in the distance. The steep terrain necessitated a compartmentalized plan capable of negotiating the gentle hillock at the center of the site. A corridor bridge spans two pieces of the house, uniting living and sleeping spaces and allowing an existing watercourse to flow essentially through the house unobstructed.
Large panels of glass open the living spaces to the landscape, beneath the deep overhang of a butterfly roof. Operable clerestories placed high on the window-wall allow prevailing breezes to cool the interior spaces. The bedroom wing of the house hugs the hillside as it turns to the west, ensuring privacy from the main living spaces. The sense of seclusion and protection of this wing is reinforced by its lower roofline and its embedment into the hill.
Initial resistance by neighboring homeowners has given way to appreciation, having seen the results of careful siting and a material and color palate sympathetic to the surrounding hillsides. The dwelling embodies an attitude of respect for the landscape, and through that perspective Falcon House has become as natural a part of its environment as the hawks flying overhead.

This Bent Creek renovation and addition gave the existing 1920s home a spacious interior and modern design while still maintaining its original character. The homeowners enjoy hosting large gatherings, but the narrow footprint and small spaces created a lot of congestion inside. To alleviate this problem, the homeowners wanted to expand the cramped kitchen and living spaces, but a huge oak tree sat only 5 feet from the kitchen window. The tree holds great sentimental value to the owners, so sacrificing the tree was out of the question, and locating the kitchen expansion elsewhere was not financially feasible. As a compromise, a large portion of the house adjacent to the kitchen was demolished, and most of the kitchen function was expanded in this direction. The end result is a beautiful and spacious home that we are very proud of.

Not unlike other 1937 kitchens, this remodel required a solid amount of pre-planning to alleviate various old home obstacles and create a plan universal to 21st century living. The family residing within this home enjoys an artistic flair in life, thus the design reflects character. Yet they maintain a respect for the homes original era, thus throw-back design elements are integrated to achieve this functional and vibrant kitchen remodel.
