This co-op roof deck for a large apartment building in Midtown East, Manhattan is made for large groups of people to enjoy at one time. It features composite wood decking and fencing, as well as white concrete pavers on pedestals. White fiberglass planters are contemporary looking and provide a nice bit of contrast to the brown deck and fence materials. A white fiberglass pergola is lightweight and easy to maintain. Sling furnishings don't require cushions, which makes them a very low-maintenance choice for a communal space. The plantings include hardy hornbeam trees, coralbark maples, crape myrtles, maiden grasses, Knockout roses, boxwoods, hydrangeas, bamboo, and arborvitaes. This yard was an unusable muddy lawn flanked by tall Arborvitae. We removed the hedge and replaced it will a beautiful Ipe screen that serves as the backdrop to a concrete water feature that spills into a channel that runs the length of the patio. Corten steel planters contain Equisetum plantings, as well as Bamboo that screens a trampoline for the childrens fun. Pavers and black mexican pebbles make up the new hardscape for the patio.

Mixing spruce, pine, fir, arborvitae and boxwood creates an interesting textural composition of holiday greenery. Simple red velvet ribbon and bows are elegant accents.

This radiused sitting area, capped with a polished granite, draws the attention to the meticulous design of the gas fireplace. Timber trellising adds vertical interest while allowing the vines and arborvitae to provide a living wall and privacy.

This inviting step-up brick surrounded Jacuzzi hot tub is made even more romantic and welcome with the addition of sumptuous outdoor lighting. Timed to automatically turn on each night when the homeowners relax in the tub at 10 pm, the illumination on the arborvitae trees and evergreens add magical impact to the night.

Extraordinary outdoor living space becomes the gathering spot with BBQ, dining area, and fire pit. Low maintenance landscaping with lighting to extend the night. Photo, Gene Meadows.
