On a corner lot in the sought after Preston Hollow area of Dallas, this 4,500sf modern home was designed to connect the indoors to the outdoors while maintaining privacy. Stacked stone, stucco and shiplap mahogany siding adorn the exterior, while a cool neutral palette blends seamlessly to multiple outdoor gardens and patios.

It’s common today to create multi-purpose spaces in your home. Whether it’s a home office and gym or a laundry and mudroom combo, families are looking to maximize every inch of space. We were called in to do just that for this local Amarillo homeowner and she knew exactly what she wanted, a matching addition to her existing brick ranch. This new space was needed to accommodate a private space for visiting guests throughout the year. Since this room would only be used occasionally as a bedroom, the homeowner also wished to use it as an exercise room. How can this be accomplished? With a murphy bed!
We set out to design the addition to blend seamlessly with the existing house using the same windows, doors and exterior brick. Inside the addition, a Murphy bed is flanked with custom built-ins featuring open shelving on the top and cabinets on the bottom. The room overlooks the pool and has it’s own private entrance, separate from the main home. The adjoining bath features a tile shower with glass surround, a closet and two skylights.
When not being used as a bedroom, the Murphy bed folds nicely into the wall and the floor space can be used for yoga or other floor exercises. The treadmill fits nicely in the room even when the bed is folded down.

Set in a quiet neighborhood and framed by mature trees, this residence presented a unique opportunity: to thoughtfully evolve a custom mid-century modern home into a space that supports the everyday rhythms of a growing family. With a deep respect for the home’s original architecture, Klopf Architecture reimagined the house to better meet the needs of its owners—introducing functional improvements while preserving the spirit and character of its mid-century roots.
The clients approached Klopf Architecture with a clear vision: refresh their home while seamlessly integrating new programmatic elements. Key goals included clarifying and enhancing the entry sequence; connecting the detached garage to the main house with a practical yet architecturally intentional intervention; adding functional spaces such as a mudroom and laundry room; expanding and remodeling the primary suite’s bathroom and closet; and creating a more engaging outdoor space that capitalized on the site’s impressive views, featuring a fire pit and outdoor kitchen.
As a couple with distinct yet complementary perspectives—one focused on modern functionality and technology, and the other dedicated to preserving the home’s architectural integrity—their collaboration with Klopf Architecture resulted in a solution that harmonized both ideals. Their shared commitment to improving the livability of their home led to a design dialogue rooted in balance. This dynamic partnership shaped the direction of the renovation, ensuring that every decision honored the spirit of the original home while aligning with the practical needs of their growing family.
Designing within the constraints of the sloped site posed one of the project’s central challenges. The detached garage sat at a higher elevation than the main house, requiring a solution that ensured architectural and geometric compatibility between the two structures. Rather than create a purely utilitarian link, Klopf Architecture introduced an intentional connection that contributes to the overall architectural language. A notable pinch point in the plan—where differing geometries converged—was treated as a hinge point, turning a potentially awkward juncture into an architectural feature. This area now functions as both a transition and a moment of design interest that unifies the overall plan.
The design also addressed the underutilized outdoor area, which was located in a shadowed portion of the site with geometrical limitations. A new connection to the rear deck was created in this same area, making the outdoor space more useful and inviting. Klopf Architecture introduced carefully positioned openings and spatial improvements that forged a strong visual and functional connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. The outdoor area now reads as a deliberate extension of the home, embracing natural light and emphasizing the dramatic views.
Working through multiple design iterations, Klopf Architecture crafted a solution that preserved the architectural language of the original home while supporting the functional needs of modern life. The garage-to-house connection became more than a passage—it evolved into an architectural moment of transition. A new mudroom and laundry space enhanced convenience without compromising the clean lines of the design. The primary suite was expanded to create a private, serene retreat. The reimagined backyard, complete with fire pit and kitchen, now plays a vital role in the family’s daily routine and social life.
Outcomes and Lasting Impact
The result is a home that balances heritage with contemporary design, technical precision with design sensibility. The redesign not only met the clients’ initial goals but also exceeded expectations in its ability to seamlessly blend past and present, function and beauty, making the outdoor kitchen a favorite gathering place.
Beyond aesthetics, the renovation has significantly improved daily life for the family. The newly integrated garage connection has streamlined routines, providing a seamless transition between arriving home, storing belongings, and entering the main living spaces. The expanded primary suite offers a retreat-like atmosphere, creating a private space to unwind at the end of the day. The redesigned outdoor areas have also become an extension of their lifestyle—whether it's casual family dinners around the fire pit, entertaining friends in the outdoor kitchen, or simply enjoying the view from the reimagined backyard.
Through a thoughtful and strategic approach, the house has been successfully evolved into a home that remains true to its mid-century modern roots while enhancing livability, functionality, and the overall quality of life for the modern-day owners.

Columbus' Experienced Custom Cabinet Builder | 4x Best of Houzz Winner

Step into the rejuvenation of a 1956 Golden Valley home, once owned by the clients’ mothers and now transformed under their ownership with a much-needed kitchen remodel. The original kitchen lacked countertop storage, featured outdated cabinets with black hinges and handles, embraced the typical soffits of the 50s era, and lacked an inviting ambiance.
Fueled by a passion for the outdoors and gardening, the homeowners opted for earthy green cabinets from Crystal Cabinets, seamlessly blending with the natural sanctuary just beyond their back door. The addition of a black glaze over the green cabinets, along with walnut accents, brought warmth and personality to the space, achieving the cozy, friendly vibe the homeowners desired.
Prioritizing functionality, a center island was introduced for entertaining grandchildren, top-of-the-line Subzero and Wolf appliances were seamlessly incorporated, and customized storage solutions were implemented to cater to the homeowners’ specific cooking needs. Soffits were removed, a closet with a vent stack was repurposed, and the vinyl floor was replaced with new hardwood to match the living room seamlessly.
The homeowners’ collection of brass kitchenware found its elegant showcase in a traditional hutch with opaque seedy glass doors, adding a touch of sophistication to the space. Personal touches, such as hand-selecting a granite stone slab reminiscent of their favorite landscape in Duluth, a glazed ceramic tile backsplash reaching the ceiling line, and the inclusion of Bicycle Glass, a local artisan, for wall sconces and pendants, further enhanced the kitchen’s unique character. Blown glass orbs soften sightlines, while the gold/black brilliance kitchen faucet with a textured handle adds a playful touch. Every aspect of this new kitchen is a reflection of the homeowners’ down-to-earth personalities, creating a space that is both functional and filled with personality.

We choose to highlight this project because even though it is a more traditional design style its light neutral color palette represents the beach lifestyle of the south bay. Our relationship with this family started when they attended one of our complimentary educational seminars to learn more about the design / build approach to remodeling. They had been working with an architect and were having trouble getting their vision to translate to the plans. They were looking to add on to their south Redondo home in a manner that would allow for seamless transition between their indoor and outdoor space. Design / Build ended up to be the perfect solution to their remodeling need.
As the project started coming together and our clients were able to visualize their dream, they trusted us to add the adjacent bathroom remodel as a finishing touch. In keeping with our light and warm palette we selected ocean blue travertine for the floor and installed a complimentary tile wainscot. The tile wainscot is comprised of hand-made ceramic crackle tile accented with Lunada Bay Selenium Silk blend glass mosaic tile. However the piéce de résistance is the frameless shower enclosure with a wave cut top.

The dining space in this home embodies the perfect fusion of rustic charm and modern sophistication. As you step into the room, your attention is immediately drawn to the breathtaking floor-to-ceiling windows that surround the space, allowing an abundance of natural light to flood the room. These expansive windows create a seamless connection between the interior and the outdoor surroundings, offering panoramic views of the picturesque landscape.
The design of the dining space is characterized by a captivating contrast of elements. The black trim framing the windows and doorways adds a bold and contemporary touch, creating a striking visual frame that accentuates the beauty of the outdoor scenery. This black trim continues throughout the room, tying the design together.
One notable feature in the dining space is the presence of rustic ceiling beams. These weathered and textured beams bring a touch of warmth and natural authenticity to the room. They serve as a visual anchor, adding a rustic charm that complements the modern elements of the space.
The attention to detail extends to the floor, where a black monolith kul grilles floor vent cover is seamlessly integrated. This vent cover not only serves its functional purpose but also adds a touch of elegance and continuity to the design. Its black monolith finish harmonizes with the black trim, creating a cohesive and polished look.
The dining area itself is furnished with a stylish and contemporary dining table and chairs. The materials and finishes are carefully selected to blend with the overall aesthetic of the space. The combination of sleek lines, rich wood tones, and possibly some metal accents creates a captivating juxtaposition of rustic and modern elements.
The overall ambiance of the dining space is one of sophistication. The interplay between rustic ceiling beams, floor-to-ceiling windows, black trim, and the kul grilles floor vent cover creates a visually stunning and inviting atmosphere. It is a space where the homeowners can enjoy meals while being surrounded by the beauty of nature, basking in the seamless integration of rustic and modern design elements.

A monolith wall was removed in this 1962 view home, which opened up the kitchen, living room and dining room for an open-concept layout and maximized views. The kitchen received modern mahogany cabinets with white uppers, white elongated subway tile backsplash and white countertop for a sleek and streamlined entertaining space. Hardwood floors were patched and refinished to integrate the previously disjointed spaces. Clean lines and modern features abound, with older fixtures and modern touches blending seamlessly – breathing new life into this space.

The owners of this 1940's Wauwatosa, Wisconsin colonial home felt that their living room, which is used primarily to read and relax, was dated and missing a centerpiece. The fireplace and surrounding bookshelves were lost in the ornamental white washed space. The goal was to enhance the existing living room by creating an aesthetically pleasing focal point in the room while not adversely affecting the new laminate floor.
Custom birch prefinished cabinets with arched tops were installed on either side of the existing fireplace with heavy fluted trim. The new custom curved mantel provides continuity as the line across the entire wall matches its height with the adjacent shelving. The mantle includes two oversized corbels to add weight and aesthetic appeal to the centerpiece. A new crown molding was made to replicate the existing crown on adjacent walls and blend seamlessly.
The recessed area above the mantel was flushed out with the existing walls creating an ideal space for the homeowners to display artwork. Two new dimmable 6" recessed eyeball lights provided the need display lighting.
The homeowners had recently remodeled their kitchen and fell in love with their new granite countertops, so they knew that they wanted to use granite for this project as well. The choice for their new fireplace surround was a unique piece of 1 1/4 Mascarello granite.
To compliment the new granite they selected a custom legend rectangle with arched doors for the fireplace facing, a blue steel frame, and bronze glass. Simple knob handles were used to complete the look. The laminate floor was undisturbed as the cabinets and flush hearth were sized to meet the existing.

A timeless kitchen designed by Ron Fisher with three different countertops and two islands blends seamlessly into this beautiful home in Cheshire Connecticut.
