This petite kitchen was previously closed off from the dining and living room. The compact size of the kitchen made it difficult for the client to host their large family gatherings. With the new design, the spaces were joined by removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room. The space of the kitchen was optimized by recessing items into adjacent walls. The refrigerator was recessed into the wall of the adjacent garage. The ovens, pantry, and appliance garage were recessed into the wall, borrowing a few square feet from the bedroom closet and living room. The finishes throughout the kitchen celebrate the clients love of travel and collection of keepsakes from around the world. The mosaic printed tiles on the backsplash and refrigerator wrap bring an eclectic mix of encaustic tile designs from around the world. The original closet and bench became this gorgeous and hard working Mud Room. We borrowed a storage closet from the adjacent garage to remodel this room into the ultimate Steamboat Mud Room! Formerly two rooms, we removed a wall and added leaded glass windows to brighten and enlarge the space. Room was borrowed from the former dining room to increase the size of the kitchen and add a back entrance mudroom. An island with seating, Calacatta quartzite countertops, navy cabinetry, and a deliberate choice not to include upper cabinets make the room feel bright, spacious, and timeless.

The sisters worked together to borrow space from an adjoining bedroom to create this white tiled oasis. It's turquoise ceiling, custom silver clawfoot tub, vintage style tile wrapping the whole room and glamorous accents make this a bathroom fit for a queen. The cabinet space behind the door (on the left) was borrowed from the relative spacious powder room behind. The folding door design was also due to the compact space. It was customized with stained glass panel and solid wood frame.

Here we recreated the primary bath by borrowing space from an adjacent laundry room and hall bath. The new design delivers a spacious bathroom suite with the bonus of improved laundry storage.

An intriguing aspect of any room layout is a light source at the far side. It provides a welcoming focus and suggests space beyond. Here, what had been a dark, dead-end kitchen is now a light-filled galley, connected to the backyard by large glass door with a side light. For large dinner parties, the five foot wide custom barn door opens up and allows the guest/TV room to be combined with the dining room. A long table can be set up through the two areas. An opening in the wall between dining room and living room (not visible in photo) allows for views of the San Francisco Bay bridge from the dining room.

This craftsman kitchen borrows natural elements from architect and design icon, Frank Lloyd Wright. A slate backsplash, soapstone counters, and wood cabinetry is a perfect throwback to midcentury design. What ties this kitchen to present day design are elements such as stainless steel appliances and smart and hidden storage. This kitchen takes advantage of every nook and cranny to provide extra storage for pantry items and cookware.
