Mixing modern and rustic for an updated Tuscan feel on this typical suburban staircase The look was created with store bought rugs stapled to the stairs to form a runner. The carpet rods are just cafe rods, screwed in place at the ends. Photo: Lauren Rubinstein

How much style can we put in one small hall bathroom? Oh so much! Our clients needed to renovate their family bathroom which was almost completely original, in their 1920’s Royal Oak tudor style home – but they didn’t want to sacrifice the style and character that they love about their home. We enhanced the arch in the bathtub/shower area and incorporated traditional tile elements including a rich colored beveled tile and tile base and installed a traditional mosaic key patterned flooring. We added wallpaper and gold fixtures and topped it off with a bright white, stylish vanity. This bathroom is small, mighty and completely in sync with this historic home.

Many of the plantings have a very lush and somewhat relaxed character. This characteristic is used to contrast and soften the strong bones connecting the garden spaces, the walkways.

Not only was the desk incorporated to maximize the floor space in this room off the entrance but the proportions of the millwork were detailed so that it did not feel too overbearing. Black inset framed glass doors with walnut stained rift cut oak interiors were chosen to reference the European inspired diamond patterned tile floors. Vintage ornate gold picture frames hold two black and white original drawings, the largest one by a 16 year old named Madi Walsh to add character and texture.

Glamorous. Refined. Luxurious. Kid-friendly? Indeed! In fact, this Michigan Avenue weekend retreat is home-away-from-home for a family of six, including four young children. Still, serenity and sophistication reign, thanks to a rich array of shimmering, shining, glossy, glassy surfaces, from subtly patterned fabrics that disguise peanut butter and jelly fingerprints to luminous accents that cast an urbane glow as the sunsets over the Lake Michigan sky. Mostly-neutral interiors are energized by strategic pops of color; custom architectural embellishments infuse additional character. Floor plan modifications ensure expansive sightlines throughout, and accentuate skyline views.
