Originally this building was to be a new garage, but the owner liked it so much that halfway through the process, he decided to forgo a garage in favor of an office. Harbor View is a modern-day interpretation of the shingled vacation houses of its seaside community. The gambrel roof, horizontal, ground-hugging emphasis, and feeling of simplicity, are all part of the character of the place. While fitting in with local traditions, Harbor View is meant for modern living. The kitchen is a central gathering spot, open to the main combined living/dining room and to the waterside porch. One easily moves between indoors and outdoors. The house is designed for an active family, a couple with three grown children and a growing number of grandchildren. It is zoned so that the whole family can be there together but retain privacy. Living, dining, kitchen, library, and porch occupy the center of the main floor. One-story wings on each side house two bedrooms and bathrooms apiece, and two more bedrooms and bathrooms and a study occupy the second floor of the central block. The house is mostly one room deep, allowing cross breezes and light from both sides. The porch, a third of which is screened, is a main dining and living space, with a stone fireplace offering a cozy place to gather on summer evenings. A barn with a loft provides storage for a car or boat off-season and serves as a big space for projects or parties in summer.

The secondary home office feels open and airy, surrounded by windows on three sides that flood the space with natural light and create an inspiring connection to the outdoors. With its stone and shingle exterior, this Morgan-Keefe home captures a refined modern cottage flair. The distinctive shingled roofline extends to the front door, while the rear of the home overlooks Lake Keowee. The cottage feel continues inside through thoughtful natural accents and finishes throughout. This remarkable home has been featured in Architectural Digest.

Inside you can see the how custom built seating area, custom desk, as well as the HomeShed entertainment system all, come together to create a comfortable and inviting space.

The desk area was also done in the same grey stained oak, with a clean floating design to maximize seating space and create an open feel. The wallpaper takes a more prominent role here behind the woodwork. Cords were eliminated largely by going wireless wherever possible. The remaining cords are run through the wall. © emily gilbert

Pipes and rustic wood was used to create this interesting shelving over the work counter. LED tape lighting was used under each shelf to add task lighting to the space.

Mid-Century update to a home located in NW Portland.
