First home, savvy art owners, decided to hire RBD to design their recently purchased two story, four bedroom, midcentury Diamond Heights home to merge their new parenthood and love for entertaining lifestyles. Hired two months prior to the arrival of their baby boy, RBD was successful in installing the nursery just in time. The home required little architectural spatial reconfiguration given the previous owner was an architect, allowing RBD to focus mainly on furniture, fixtures and accessories while updating only a few finishes. New paint grade paneling added a needed midcentury texture to the entry, while an existing site for sore eyes radiator, received a new walnut cover creating a built-in mid-century custom headboard for the guest room, perfect for large art and plant decoration. RBD successfully paired furniture and art selections to connect the existing material finishes by keeping fabrics neutral and complimentary to the existing finishes. Recycled shipping containers are fireproof, impervious to water and stronger than traditional building materials. This beautiful white kitchen belongs to a home in Saratoga Springs, NY nearby Saratoga Lake. The kitchen layout was redesigned, and the whole space remodeled completely to showcase its full potential, seen from the open living room and breakfast nook. The Beaded Inset cabinetry is from Shiloh, in Arctic white painted Maple, and the Square Flat Panel style. The cabinetry range hood is a beautiful focal point, along with the glass doors highlighted by LED lighting, and the detailed moldings throughout. The hardwood floors were refinished, and the kitchen along with adjacent rooms were painted a complimentary blue. The stunning Quartzite counter is called Wicked White from the Granite & Marble Works in nearby Wilton, NY, and the tumbled marble subway tile back splash coordinates well with the cabinets and counter. There is also undercabinet LED lighting, and the hardware used is from the Forte 2 Collection from Berenson. A Kohler Farm Sink was installed in the large island, and convenient storage solutions are hidden around the kitchen--such as a pull-out spice rack behind a filler, deep drawers for pots and pans, and a door mounted waste base cabinet. The Pleasant Beach Shop was designed to complement the main house that had been constructed in the early 2,000’s. The Shop supports a functioning, thriving woodworking business and at the same time is a complimentary neighbor amongst the residential context. The shop is lit by both artificial and natural light through a continuous light monitor along the ridge of the roof. This monitor allows for both height and light when working inside the Shop and acts as a lantern to the forest during the evening.

Completed in 2011, this home is designed for a steeply sloping urban lot in Vienna, Virginia. In response to a tight zoning code that limited the building's footprint, we designed a compact plan that rises 3 stories and draws inspiration from the historic character of this small town consistently rated as one of the best places to live and work. Utilizing our favorite Great Room Scheme, the main level is planned with a classic front porch, 2-story entry hall, formal dining room, Kitchen/Breakfast area, large Mud Room with separate entrance and, finally, the Great Room itself. The lower level is the Entertainment hub of the house and contains a guest suite, shop, exercise area, family room and play area with wet bar. Upstairs, 3 kid's bedrooms, 2 full baths, laundry area, Master Suite with large sleeping area and a 5 piece master bath with large walk-in closet are all efficiently arranged to maximize room size. Our clients were interested in a very expressive exterior formalism while staying within the traditional architectural norm of Vienna. We responded with a series of gable dormers, bay windows and a hexagonal sitting room clad with complimentary siding materials and bold colors. Eventually, the back of the structure will be finished out with a large deck at the main level and elaborate staircase that descends to the rear yard.

Dark chocolate stained front entry door made from mahogany wood features planked lower panels in door and sidelights. This triple unit will let plenty of sunlight in through the 12 lites top panel of the door and the distinguished complimentary sidelights. Looks so handsome next to the shake siding on the house.

The new guest bathroom features a clean Corian one-piece counter and sink with complimentary tile backsplash and flush full wall mirror. Stainless steel wall mounted lavatory faucet and polished chrome finger pulls complete the picture.

They are a busy 2-career household with young children and enjoy entertaining friends and family in their home. They have a beautiful open concept home but unfortunately the kitchen was not fitting for the rest of the home. They were not quite sure what to do with the space. We talked about trying to refresh it or do more of a minor remodel, but in the end they decided a full gut would get them to where they wanted to be. One problem was there was no place for guests to hang out other than the large and awkward banquette area. The brick wall and tiled hood area were feeling a bit dated and tired. The space was just not functional for their lifestyle. There was no prep space near the cooktop and no landing area for items coming out of the ovens or refrigerator, plus a big dead zone in the center of the room. Banquettes, like the one they previously had in the space, are great for small spaces, but when they get really large like this one, it makes getting in and out of the seating area awkward and uncomfortable. Plus, there was room for a large table, so we eliminated the awkward built in. We started by removing the faux brick wall between the kitchen and back entry. We relocated the entry to the garage over a couple feet in order to get every last inch out of the new kitchen. We also made the decision to close up the primary window that faced the pretty ho hum brick wall of the neighbor’s house. There was plenty of light coming in from the seating area, so we just didn’t feel the window was adding much to the room. Construction went smoothy. There was a bit of rework with electrical, flooring and HVAC, but in the end, we think it was well worth it. The clients really wanted a sleek contemporary look, and we originally had planned for a full height slab backsplash, but due to it’s size, it was a budget buster. Instead, we got creative and settled on large format porcelain tiles that have a similar feel but were a fraction of the cost. We made sure the wall was plumb and level so that the fit and finish would mimic that of slab material. The final space was quite a change. A large prep sink sits directly across from the new pro-style range with plenty additional prep space on the large island. The refrigerator and ovens now have miles of landing space, and a nice tight work triangle makes cooking a breeze. Since we wanted a more contemporary feel, not many wall cabinets were included. Instead, we outfitted some of the drawers for dish storage with a peg system. Two large pantries flanking the refrigerator hold baking supplies and small appliances. Large drawers by the cooktop hold pots and pans, and an appliance garage tucked away to the left of the range hides away miscellaneous items. The large island also houses a microwave drawer and tons of storage, most of which is drawers offering maximum convenience. The island now seats 5-6 people comfortably along with the new table in the seating area which can seat up to 8. Entertaining will be a breeze in this space. With such a clean backdrop, we knew we would need some drama with the lighting, so we chose two sets of staggered pendants, which we adjusted for the right visual balance above the island. We also included a small coffee station to the right of the main kitchen, which helps keep the coffee clutter out of the kitchen proper. Two tones of complimentary gray are featured in this kitchen. The perimeter is a light gray that reads almost white. The island is a gray stain that adds some depth and interest with the visible wood texture. The countertops are clean white quartz, and the hardware, barstools and light fixtures add warm brass tones. I see lots of cooking and entertaining with family and friends in the near future in this bright and airy new space. This cottage is on Lake Muskoka in Ontario. The cottage was a custom design project for an busy urban professional family. The cottage sits high on a point of land over looking the lake. The cottage and the deck are visible from the lake but it is the complimentary boathouse that joins the whole project together. The design of the cottage incorporated cedar shakes, natural stone, wood timbers and cedar decking. The cottage features a double height stone fireplace in the central great room. The great room has beamed cathedral ceilings and magnificent clerestory windows. The Cottage has an unprecedented view of beautiful Lake Muskoka.
