For the Cottages & Bungalows Magazine‘s 2019 Project House partnership with Yankee Barn Homes, we conceived our “Great NH Escape” Great Room for an active family from a suburban/Metro area who crave the quiet and rugged outdoors of New Hampshire for their getaway weekends, both winter and summer. Though a second home, we felt that the parents truly saw Yankee Barn Homes’ spectacular post-and-beam Springfield Barn House as a “Forever Home-Away-from-Home” – the long-term backdrop for their family’s North Woods memories and a refuge to return to time and again from the noise of the more congested town where they live. As such, we furnished it with the same well-crafted, American-made décor that would stand the test of time in any investment home and a fresh classic style that would reflect the fun vitality of their family.

This Bent Creek renovation and addition gave the existing 1920s home a spacious interior and modern design while still maintaining its original character. The homeowners enjoy hosting large gatherings, but the narrow footprint and small spaces created a lot of congestion inside. To alleviate this problem, the homeowners wanted to expand the cramped kitchen and living spaces, but a huge oak tree sat only 5 feet from the kitchen window. The tree holds great sentimental value to the owners, so sacrificing the tree was out of the question, and locating the kitchen expansion elsewhere was not financially feasible. As a compromise, a large portion of the house adjacent to the kitchen was demolished, and most of the kitchen function was expanded in this direction. Rob and Danielle have three children and wanted a kitchen redesign that would function better for their active household. Their kitchen contained tight spaces with a narrow island that blocked flow through the room. Two cooks in the kitchen were one too many as the space wasn’t conducive for it. For entertaining, the island proved to be too small to set out all their food and have room around it for guests to congregate. The only way to walk to the great room, which was where the family hung out most often, was to go through the kitchen and dining area, proving to again congest the area. They are avid sailors, and wanted to bring in the color of the sea into their contemporary design. I added a separate entry point directly from the kitchen to the great room, and created a work triangle in a separate area to relieve the congestion from people passing through the room. The island shape and size were uniquely designed to allow the person at the sink to be able to look directly into the great room, and provide ample space to spread out food for entertaining. A bookcase was integrated into the island to display cookbooks, and the paneled refrigerator made for a seamless wall of beautiful cabinetry. The entry into the formal dining was relocated to remove the necessity of having corner cabinetry. A separate bar area allows family and guests to make their drinks without needing to go into the chef’s space. The glass backsplash tile was selected to reflect the sea colors they love, with crystal pendants to add bling similar to the light that reflects off the water.

When these clients bought this home 15 years ago, they already knew the kitchen would need to be renovated to accommodate their passion for cooking and love for entertaining. The old kitchen layout caused a lot of congestion for the family and the design did not reflect the rest of the beautiful home. Inspiration for a contemporary kitchen remodel in Toronto

The foyer was punctuated by double glass doors that provided no privacy as well as a coat closet that made the foyer feel cramped and congested. The home's entry has been enhanced with the beautiful Douglas fir and trapezoidal glass doors by Simpson.
