Kitchen remodel in Annandale, Virginia. After 20 years of use, these Snaidero base cabinets were damaged by a flood, but the upper cabinets were in such good shape, that only the base cabinets had to be replace. Adding the Fusion Oak Matrix base cabinets gave the kitchen an updated look and fresh feel. Photo credit to the amazing Sean Shanahan!

This 1960s Ranch was taken from it's original red/yellow brick and painted a light grey tan color. I added a new roof and the red/maroon bleached out shutters were changed out for stained board and batten shutters. I also added a new garage door with accent pieces, exterior lighting was changed out and I extended the original front porch out by an additional 4 feet making it a true sitting porch. We also put in a tree swing in front to show the tranquility of the home and neighborhood and give the home a new young feel since the neighborhood was becoming a new hub for first time buyers with children. Almost every room in the house offers stunning views of the outdoor living space and golf course. The dining room is subtly elegant creating an intimate dining space but also a space to enjoy looking outdoors. The custom chairs have a curved back design to contrast with the linear dining table. The host and hostess chairs add texture and Texas chic with their velvet alligator skin fabric. Permanently set, the tableware sparkles under the crystal chandelier revitalized by a talented faux finisher.

A 43” diameter heritage pecan guided the plan of this neighborhood-scaled, modestly-priced, single-story, L-shaped house. In Austin’s seemingly perpetual drought, the goal was to create a symbiotic relationship between house and tree: to complement, not combat each other. The roof’s east/west parallel ridges create a valley directly across from the base, where water is collected at a grate, nourishing the tree. The roof also maximizes south facing surfaces, elevated at 15 degrees for future solar collection. The open, public spaces of the home maximize the north-south light. The private zone of the bedrooms and bathrooms include a generous gallery; its angled walls and large sliding doors are faceted about the tree. The pecan becomes a central focus for indoor and outdoor living, participating in the house in both plan and section. The design welcomes and nurtures the tree as integral to its success.
