BeachHaus is built on a previously developed site on Siesta Key. It sits directly on the bay but has Gulf views from the upper floor and roof deck.
The client loved the old Florida cracker beach houses that are harder and harder to find these days. They loved the exposed roof joists, ship lap ceilings, light colored surfaces and inviting and durable materials.
Given the risk of hurricanes, building those homes in these areas is not only disingenuous it is impossible. Instead, we focused on building the new era of beach houses; fully elevated to comfy with FEMA requirements, exposed concrete beams, long eaves to shade windows, coralina stone cladding, ship lap ceilings, and white oak and terrazzo flooring.
The home is Net Zero Energy with a HERS index of -25 making it one of the most energy efficient homes in the US. It is also certified NGBS Emerald.

A waterfront view like in this 1988-built master bathroom is priceless, especially with the existing skylight. The bath was taken down to studs and rebuilt, removing a wall between the toilet/shower area and opening up the entire 140sqft space. Curbless shower, freestanding airjet tub, rainhead shower and porcelain tile and oil-rubbed bronze fixtures throughout. An additional intrigue was recessed lights in tub and shower areas that have option to turn on UV light after use to diminish bacteria.

Can a home be both rustic and contemporary at once? This Mountain Mid Century home answers “absolutely” with its cheerfully canted roofs and asymmetrical timber joinery detailing. Perched on a hill with breathtaking views of the eastern plains and evening city lights, this home playfully reinterprets elements of historic Colorado mine structures. Inside, the comfortably proportioned Great Room finds its warm rustic character in the traditionally detailed stone fireplace, while outside covered decks frame views in every direction.

The Macallen Building and Court Square Press Courtyard by Michael Blier, RLA, ASLA of Landworks Studio, Inc., with architect Nader Tehrani of NADAAA
Located in a rapidly evolving area on the outskirts of South Boston, the Macallen Building condominium community features an award-winning landscape that evokes the neighborhood’s industrial heritage while demonstrating modern principles of sustainable development. Awarded LEED Gold certification in 2008, the project’s attention to sustainability permeates all aspects the three-tiered landscape. Paving materials, tree plantings, and lighting adorn an entry-level courtyard on the ground floor, known as “Macallen Way.” The second level landscape covers the roof of the parking garage, providing recreational space for building residents as well as a graphic garden designed to be viewed from the condominiums above. The third level—including a sloping green roof and terrace garden—is integral to the building’s achievement of LEED certification as the green space is specifically designed to improve stormwater management, ameliorate the urban heat island effect, and provide additional insulation to the building. Through use of these design elements, the landscape greatly diminishes the ecological impact of development and serves as a model for sustainable development throughout the evolving region. In addition to the Macallen Building attendees will also get to visit the adjacent Court Square Press Courtyard which won the American Society of Landscape Architect's 2006 Award of Excellence in the General Design category. Built in 1884, this is the first house on Main Street one sees when exiting the train station. Its prominent corner location helps define the gateway to the town shopping district. Schematic design sessions for this period home’s renovation were already complete when the news was shared with the design team that one of the owners had been diagnosed with a progressive motor neuron disease.
The homeowners asked us to incorporate universal design features—including wheelchair access to every room on every level of the home—but were insistent that they did not want to create a home that looked or felt institutional.
Due to the home’s high visibility, it was important to the owners that the addition, including the elevator rise, be stylistically seamless and unobtrusive. This was achieved by applying existing character-defining features from the house such as octagonal massing, columned porches, steep roof slopes, and decorative shingle patterns. Complimentary architectural ornamentation was introduced to highlight the Queen Anne style and diminish the scale of the elevator rise. Interior and exterior access challenges were graciously overcome without sacrificing authentic period detailing.
The addition begins with exterior entry at ground level. A half stop down to the basement provides access to a “wheelchair wash/dog wash” station and game room. A half stop up brings the elevator to the first floor followed by traditional stops at the second floor and attic/owner’s suite.
Widened halls and doors make circulation via a wheelchair through the home achievable. Other universal design features and fixtures include the zero-entry shower in the owner’s and guest baths, French-door ovens, induction cooktop, touchless faucet, and refrigerator and freezer drawers. These make the home functional and comfortable for all members of the family.
In collaboration with a landscape architect, we also created a lush pocket of privacy on this very public lot. The new hardscaping creates access around the house, to the grill, fire pit, patio and driveway as well as to the town sidewalks making wheelchair inclusion both possible and effortless. Substantially complete Fall 2021.

This is another example of using a cable rail system to make a small space seem bigger. Because of square footage restrictions and & site conditions the front entry was limited to a small set of steps and overhang. The cable rail provided visual interest without diminishing the view of the house from the street.

The unique existing layout and beautiful wooden beams were something the client wanted to enhance and not diminish. By removing the eye-sore planter boxes, dated railings, and bulky tiled staircase, and replacing it with a gorgeous walnut railing and black metal cable system we allowed this space to be more open, modern, and cohesive.

We installed custom sun shades into a new restaurant in Lowertown, Saint Paul. The brick arches and high windows presented a unique design challenge. Our goal was to maintain the beautiful brick charm while diminishing the blinding sunlight. Roller sun shades on the lower windows with contoured sun fabric in the arches was the solution. Note the attention to detail along the brick edges with fabric install. The results were beautiful!

The formality of the home office was diminished by using a whimsical branch lamp with burlap shade, nature prints, denim blue drapery panels, distressed leather chairs and a zebra print rug. A very tailored upholstered dining chair (Verlaine Arm Chair by Ethan Allen) replaced the typical leather desk/office chair.

This beautiful, but tired, eclectic craftmanesque home needed an interior makeover without diminishing its unique charm. The front entry was updated while an addition was added to the rear of the house so the kitchen and bathrooms could be expanded and redesigned.

We retained the front-facing gable and ridge beam height of the original structure and minimized the impact of the 3-story addition using horizontal material changes to minimize verticality. The choice of a hipped roof over the addition vs. a gable further diminished its vertical presence.

For this project in Chadds Ford, the homeowners were ready to replace their aging exterior garage doors with a cleaner, more reliable solution. The original doors had become dated and worn over time, diminishing the appearance of the detached two-car garage and the property as a whole.
We installed the Bridgeport Narrow Panel series in white with steel doors from Clopay, a durable and timeless option designed to complement a wide range of styles. This new installation highlights the benefits of paving with grass, as well as the comparative ease of installation. Concrete and asphalt surfaces occupy twice the area of buildings and are the most detrimental to clean water. Concrete and asphalt surfaces dominate the landscape of our urban environments and prevent rainwater from being filtered naturally. They send harmful polluted water straight into our streams, rivers and lakes. In urban America, concrete and asphalt pavements produce two thirds of our excess water runoff. They are responsible for significant hydrocarbon pollutants on our ground and in our water, causing ground water decline, and resulting in local water shortages. These concrete and asphalt surfaces also create huge increases in temperature known as the urban “heat island effect”.
The pollution caused by impervious surfaces deteriorate the quality of our storm water runoff and create large overflows that our storm sewer systems cannot handle. It is also important to realize that the urban forest force is drastically diminishing, causing CO2 levels to rise, which in turn causes global warming. With all the negative influences of impervious pavements now is the time to turn our attention to alternatives for the benefit of the environment.

By routing rainwater directly into the earth as nature intended, the need for costly storm water structures can be drastically reduced.

The pathway to the back garden circumnavigates a large spruce tree. The horizontal lattes of the wood fence visually stretch the length of the side yard, allowing light and air through while protecting the view to the neighbours. The garden shed was painted a neutral gray green to diminish it's visual impact.
