We have just completed the site design for a home that sits on a wooded lot near Syracuse New York. The homeowners purchased the property recently and needed to update the home and landscape for their growing family.
The existing gardens were very neglected and poorly constructed by the previous homeowner. The multiple-level changes and large existing trees made for a complex site design that needed to benefit the homeowners yet caused minimal disruption to the wooded site. The rear garden deck was unsafe and demolished. We replaced it with a IPE deck with a separate screened-in porch. New retaining walls, natural fieldstone walls, steps, and bluestone paved terraces were added throughout the property for ease of use and safety. New LED lighting and new planting complete the design.

Before: The bathroom’s original double vanity was functional but dated, with raised sinks that disrupted the flow of the shared middle space. The dark wooden cabinets and faux marble countertop in a tired swirl design felt heavy and uninspired. A single oversized mirror spanned the wall, reflecting the outdated chrome knob-handle faucets and the room’s overall lack of charm.

As with all projects, which Murphy Bros. initiated during the pandemic outbreak in the spring of 2020, careful considerations were made in consultations with homeowners to protect everyone during each phase of the remodel.
“We sealed off the upstairs with a poly wall from the downstairs and put a special lock on the walkout patio door so we had a separate entrance to the project,” explains Long. “I think the hardest thing for COVID protocol was keeping the homeowners from coming downstairs to peek in on the progress,” says Long, “But even with that, the safety was maintained at a high level and the work was done with minimal disruption.

Metal Framing
When it comes to studs, instead of automatically buying wood, consider metal for non-load bearing walls. According to the Steel Framing Alliance, nearly 500,000 homes have been built with steel framing over the past decade.

As an avid cook, this homeowner wanted to upgrade the existing apartment-sized appliances and improve the functionality of cabinets and the countertop space to support his chef skills and daily use.
We readdressed the kitchen back wall, updating the range and sink and refreshing the overall aesthetic. A stunning black Ann Saks accent tile provides a dramatic focal point and complements the sophisticated waterfall edge island countertop. We installed a microwave drawer and additional storage in the island without disrupting the prominent stone edge detail. Other changes included the integration of a reverse osmosis water system and transitioning from an induction to a gas heat source.

The primary challenge of this project was to transform a cold and divided space into an open and inviting one to serve as, not just a kitchen, but a dining area and living space that would be comfortable for a small family and suitable for entertaining guests.
The client wished to have a warm and welcoming atmosphere that would flow smoothly into the rest of the home as well as tie the space in with an outdoor deck, all without sacrificing the “coziness” of the design. Additionally, a desk and a dining area had to be incorporated in the new room without interrupting traffic flow or disrupting the visual appeal of the space.

Clean lines and a refined material palette transformed the Moss Hill House master bath into an open, light-filled space appropriate to its 1960 modern character.
Underlying the design is a thoughtful intent to maximize opportunities within the long narrow footprint. Minimizing project cost and disruption, fixture locations were generally maintained. All interior walls and existing soaking tub were removed, making room for a large walk-in shower. Large planes of glass provide definition and maintain desired openness, allowing daylight from clerestory windows to fill the space.
Light-toned finishes and large format tiles throughout offer an uncluttered vision. Polished marble “circles” provide textural contrast and small-scale detail, while an oak veneered vanity adds additional warmth.
In-floor radiant heat, reclaimed veneer, dimming controls, and ample daylighting are important sustainable features. This renovation converted a well-worn room into one with a modern functionality and a visual timelessness that will take it into the future.

Floor-to-ceiling calacatta marble with no visible grout joints — that's the standard Kingdom & Co. set in The Parker's primary shower. The marble slabs were selected for their bold gray veining, and the matte black fixtures provide the perfect contrast. A built-in recessed niche keeps products accessible without disrupting the seamless stone surfaces. This is what a luxury Las Vegas bathroom remodel looks like when material quality is the priority.

The great room opens up to the kitchen for a view of the fireplace throughout the main living areas on the first level. There are transom windows above the built-ins for subtle natural light that will not disrupt the viewing area.

This project is located up on the hillside of Paradise Valley and was built with great view of the valley in mind. We built the home with many floor-to-ceilings and negative-edge pool to capitalize on its great hillside location.
It was a challenging home build because it was located on rock. We used specialized equipment so it would appear the home had settled there naturally without leaving a disruption around the home.
