Powder bathroom is the one room in a house where not many rules apply. In this house, it is a vibrant example of transitional design. As you enter thru frosted glass door decorated with colorful Venetian accents, you are immediately welcomed by vibrantly red walls reflecting softly in the white marble floor. The red mosaic creates a backdrop that sets the playful and elegant tone for this room, and it compliments perfectly with the floating, curvilinear black ebony vanity. The entire powder room is designed with beauty and function in mind. Lets not be deceived here - it has all the necessities of a bathroom. The three layers of this vanity give it an elegant and sculptural form while housing LED lighting and offering convenient and necessary storage in form of drawers. Special attention was paid to ensure uninterrupted pattern of the ebony veneer, maximizing its beauty. Furthermore, the weightless design of the vanity was accomplished by crowning it with a thick textured glass counter that sits a top of crystal spheres. There are three lighting types in this bathroom, each addressing the specific function of this room: 1) recessed overhead LED lights used for general illumination, 2) soft warm light penetrating the rock crystal decorative sconces placed on each side of mirror to illuminate the face, 3) LED lighting under each layer of the vanity produces an elegant pattern at night and for use during entertaining. Boasting views of the Museum of Natural History and Central Park, the Beaux Arts and French Renaissance style building built in 1900 was once home to a luxury hotel. Over the years multiple hotel rooms were combined into the larger apartment residences that exist today. The resulting units, while large in size, lacked the continuity of a single formed space. StudioLAB was presented with the challenge of re-designing the space to fit a modern family’s lifestyle today with the flexibility to adjust as they evolve into their tomorrow. Thus, the existing configuration was completely abandoned with new programmatic elements being relocated in each and every corner of the space. For clients that are big wine connoisseurs, the focal point of entry and circulation lies in a 400 bottle, custom built, blackened steel and glass, temperature controlled wine cabinet. The once enclosed living room was demolished to create one main entertaining space that includes a new dining area and open kitchen. Hafele bi-folding pocket door slides were used in the Living room wall unit to conceal the television, bar and display shelves when not in use. Posing as kitchen cabinetry, a hidden integrated door opens to reveal a guest bedroom with an en suite bathroom. Down the hallway of wide plank ebony stained walnut flooring, a compact powder room was built to house an original Paul Villinski installation of small butterflies cut from recycled aluminum cans, entitled Mistral. Continuing down the hall, and through one of the walnut veneered doors, is the shared kids bedroom where a custom-built bunk bed with integrated storage steps and desk was designed to allow for play space and a reading corner. The kids bathroom across the hall is decorated with custom Lego inspired hand cast concrete tiles and integrated pull-out footstools residing underneath the floating vanity. The master suite features a bio-ethanol fireplace wrapped in blackened steel and integrated into the Tabu veneered built-in. The spacious walk-in closet serves several purposes, which include housing the apartment’s new central HVAC system as well as a sleeping spot for the family’s dog. An integrated URC control system paired with Lutron Radio RA lighting keypads were installed to control the AV, HVAC, lighting and solar shades all by the use of smartphones.

A built-in linear fireplace, custom 11ft coffered ceilings and 5 large windows allow the delicate interplay of light and form to surround the home-owner in their place of rest. With pristine beauty and copious functions the Master Bath is a worthy refuge for anyone in need of a moment of peace. The gentle curve of the 10ft high, barrel-vaulted ceiling frames perfectly the modern free-standing tub, which is set against a backdrop of three 6ft tall windows. The large personal sauna and immense tile shower offer even more options for relaxation and relief from the day. The Master Bath is complete with his and hers matching vanities, a steam shower, soaking tub, separate toilet room and it own coffee bar. The double shower is a steam-shower with the equipment conveniently placed in the cabinetry under the window. Moser Inset Cabinetry, Circa Lighting, Ann Sacks Mosaic Marble Floors, Phylrich Faucets, Mr. Steam Shower, Kohler Tub, silent run fans and Top Knob Cabinetry Hardware make this a bathroom that will last for ages.

The homeowners loved the location of their small Cape Cod home, but they didn't love its limited interior space. A 10' addition along the back of the home and a brand new 2nd story gave them just the space they needed. With a classy monotone exterior and a welcoming front porch, this remodel is a refined example of a transitional style home.
