Who said that a Burbank bungalow home needs to be doll and old fashioned. In this Burbank remodeling project we took this 1200sq. bungalow home and turned it to a wonderful mixture of European modern kitchen space and calm transitional modern farmhouse furniture and flooring. The kitchen was a true challenge since space was a rare commodity, but with the right layout storage and work space became abundant. A floating 5' long sitting area was constructed and even the back face of the cabinets was used for wine racks. Exterior was updated as well with new black windows, new stucco over layer and new light fixtures all around. both bedrooms were fitted with huge 10' sliding doors overlooking the green backyard.

The homeowners desired an outdoor space that felt more rustic than their refined interior spaces, but still related architecturally to their house. Cement plaster support arbor columns provide enough of visual tie to the existing house exterior. Oversized wood beams and rafter members provide a unique outdoor atmosphere. Achieving the old world look and feel in the kitchen, a Melrose Partners Designs signature look is used: high gloss stained doors and cabinets meet polished nickel oversized hardware. Dark walnut interiors and striking English ice box hinges and pulls were procured, along with oversized quartz countertops on both the center island and main counter space run; mirror-polished stainless steel drawer fronts dress up the distressed hickory and insert doors on the main island. An added bonus: a 45-inch under-mounted sink with a hot and cold water dispenser. In order to achieve a grandiose feel for the space, a Cerused finished, 12-inch plank white oak, expanses the floor.

At the entrance to the kitchen is an integrated bookcase complete with outlets for charging devices as well as display space.

Compact kitchen in the Caretakers Apartment complete with 24" glass top GE Electric Free-Standing Range and 24" LG Fridge and Freezer Combo (not shown). Red painted shaker cabinets, with white glass knobs and Pental Quartz countertops and 4" blacksplash in "Polished Cashmere". Kohler stainless steel single bowl sink, top mounted, with Kohler Simplice faucet in vibrant stainless. Wall mounted sconce above the sink is Shades of Sleek Contemporary bath light in rubbed bronze. Walls are Sherwin Willams "White Heron Stain", baseboards, window sills and beams are hemlock in Wurth "Morgeau" stain. Flooring is Cathedral Plank in "Gold Coast Oak." Tongue and groove ceiling is rough sawn fir and spruce. Floating shelves on sink wall use floating shelve brackets and are finished in the same wood at the exposed beams.

Large island, white, marble and satin brass finishes are complemented by the luxury vinyl fabric on the counterstools, chairs and banquette cushion. Spills and stains are no worry
