"This 1929 Lakewood home featured classic architectural details like coved ceilings and arched doorways but had a small, dim kitchen lacking storage. To create a modern, spacious layout, the breakfast nook and covered porch were combined, adding square footage. Relocating the sink allowed for a larger window, more natural light, and space for a dishwasher. The wall between the kitchen and dining room was removed, improving flow and revealing a beautiful arched passageway to the living room. Preserving the coved ceiling required careful extraction and reinstallation during structural upgrades, which included new footings and beams to support the kitchen bump-out. Finished with matching cedar lap siding and blended paint, the expanded kitchen honors the home’s historic charm while offering improved functionality, natural light, and seamless indoor-outdoor access."

The architectural goal was to create simplicity out of natural materials while allowing the physical expansiveness of the location to shine through. This involved extracting the design down to the wood structure, framing, and elements. Locally sourced cedar lines the rooms, absorbing the summer and early fall quality of light, allowing the inside and outside to blue and age together in natural harmony. This precision remodel extracted the tub and replaced it with an alcove walk-in shower with tile in linear drain and long horizontal niche. Maintaining a wall spout offers flexibility for all uses. The back wall and shower floor tile extends into the whole bathroom space which was the only element changed outside of the shower. Careful demo preserved the existing paint treatment on the walls as requested by the homeowner. The glossy black subway tile on either end of the new shower balances the existing black counter and toilet on the opposite side of the room. Linen-textured 12x24 tile completes the shower and flooring. Richards & Sterling tile in the niche pulls together the mixed metals in the space and adds a great feature . Three different carefully selected Schluter edges finishes off the tile perfectly. A single hinged glass partition door keeps the space feeling open and reflects the giant existing window.

The client had an existing kitchen that we installed over 15 years ago at the front of their house. They wanted to update and move the kitchen to the rear of the home, requiring the removal of partitions and a full redesign. The goal was to create a modern, functional kitchen suitable for entertaining friends and family. The kitchen was outfitted with the Nolte Lux range featuring Black MatrixArt handleless trims with integrated lighting. The main door colour was selected in Arctic White with an accent in Plus Black Fingerprint proof. This monochrome scheme achieved a sleek, modern look. We opted for Nolte 25mm Black worktops on the perimeter and a Nolte 40mm White worktop for the island. The kitchen is equipped with high-quality Siemens appliances, including a single oven, combination microwave, induction hob, ceiling extraction, and a full-height fridge. When these clients came to us seeking a kitchen renovation, we gladly seized the opportunity to come up with a unique design that was tailored to their needs. Being a fun and trendy younger couple with two daughters, their desire for a completely white kitchen did not seem to suit who they were as a family. We turned towards the rest of their home for inspiration on how we could extract the clients true taste. The recipe for this design came from fine wines and freshly brewed coffee, mixed in with elegance and topped off by a strong sense of family. We kept the desire for the white kitchen, but brought in the warmth of the wood, the fun of the green back splash and the stylish edge of the black appliances. This family can now enjoy their time together in a space that we believe reflects who they are.

Our client was in the process of building a new house to their specification in Fraserburgh. The centrepiece? A contemporary, open-plan kitchen that not only serves as a functional space but also as an inviting hub for family gatherings. Opting for the Nolte SoftLack range, we integrated the Silver MatrixArt handleless trims, complemented by elegant integrated lighting. The main furniture showcases a soothing Sahara hue, contrasted smartly by the Lava accent. Recently Heidi and I worked on a Victorian tiled hallway floor at a house in Turton, Lancashire, an area which lies on the southern slopes of the West Pennine Moors. Victorian tile floors are commonly found in the reception area and hallways of older houses and public buildings, many of which date back to the reign of Queen Victoria (hence ‘Victorian’ tiles). It was during this time that the tile industry really started to boom. Upon inspection it was evident that the floor in question had suffered from some settlement in the past resulting in a crack in the base under the tiles which had lifted one side and dropped the other; this is quite common in old houses resulting in some of the tiles becoming loose and would need to be fixed back in place before the floor could be given a good clean and re-seal. Removing Lippage from Victorian Tiles The concrete floor under the tile was patched as best as could be without pulling up more of the floor and the tiles were fixed in place, unfortunately however many of the triangular tiles in the adjacent border would not lay flat resulting in a lippage issue between them which naturally the customer was not very happy about. Not wishing to cause the customer the extra expense of pulling up more tiles and relaying the concrete subfloor I left the tiles to fully set and then came back a few days later with a handheld Flex Machine fitted with a small 220 Grit Diamond pad to grind the tiles flat. As the pictures show, this made the difference and the diamond did not scratch the tiles despite the surface being dry. Diamond pads are usually used on stone floors but after some investigation back at the Tile Doctor training centre we also realised they can be used on other types of tile including Victorian. Once this was resolved the entire floor was given a thorough clean using a strong dilution of Tile Doctor Pro-Clean worked in with a scrubbing pad. As well as cleaning the tile and grout it also removed any remaining sealer which is important if you don’t know the history of the floor as the previous coating maybe incompatible with the new sealer. Once done the floor was given a thorough rinse with water which was then extracted from the floor with a wet vacuum. Sealing Victorian Tiles The floor was left to dry and I returned later to seal the tiles with a couple of coats of Tile Doctor Colour Grow which is an impregnating sealer that soaks into the pores of the tile and intensifies colour whilst also providing durable protection from within. Normally I use Seal and Go on Victorian Tiles however in this case the customer had specified a matt finish. The results were fantastic and the client was very pleased with the now flat Victorian tiled floor which, thanks to the cleaning and sealing, was back to looking its best. Our client in Inverallochy, Fraserburgh wanted a modern and functional kitchen with multiple cooking options, an island with an eating area, and a coffee station. In order to meet these requirements, we had to determine how to block up a window without sacrificing their 180-degree sea view. We opted for Nolte's SoftLack range with Silver MatrixArt handleless trims, paired with integrated lighting. The Sahara beige-coloured furniture mixed with Soft Lack Deep Blue provides a modern yet warm atmosphere. Dekton Trilium worktops with mitred waterfall ends were chosen for durability and style. A comprehensive range of NEFF appliances was installed, including two ovens, a microwave, and a coffee centre. We also added a large induction hob with ceiling extraction and Liebherr fridge and freezer with built-in ice-making. Among the additional features are a Blanco undermounted sink and a Quooker Flex stainless steel instant boiling water tap. Karndean flooring was used for its aesthetic appeal and durability. As is often the case in years past and for whatever reason many homeowners covered their decorative Victorian hallway tiles in a variety of products from carpet to laminate flooring. These days the trend has reversed and quite rightly many homeowners now realise the value a tiled floor can bring to a property and look to us to have it restored. Our client had purchased a property in Norfolk seaport of Kings Lynn and, on lifting the dirty old carpet and decaying underlay in the hallway, discovered a beautiful tiled entrance hall. It was obvious that a previous owner had decided to lay carpet over the tiles as an easy way of hiding the result of careless renovation and decorating which had resulted in a thick coating of plaster, paint, carpet tape glue and various other contaminants which had become firmly stuck to the surface. There were also two small rectangular black and brown tiles missing behind the front door which had been damaged during the removal of some old lead pipes. This was clearly a job which would need somewhat more than a scrubbing brush and a bottle of Flash! Our first job was to remove as much of the solid contaminants as possible by hand with floor scrapers and a steamer which softened the more stubborn lumps. We then applied Tile Doctor Remove & Go which is a powerful alkaline stripper to the whole area, left it to dwell on the surface for twenty minutes and then scrubbed it in using a rotary machine fitted with a black scrubbing pad. The resulting slurry was then power rinsed and extracted away using our Ninja machine which is a high-power industrial vacuum. Any remaining patches where the carpet tape had been stuck down were spot treated using Tile Doctor Nanotech HBU which made short work of the hardened glue. The result was a clean floor, but the surface still felt slightly rough and pitted, a problem which we resolved using the rotary machine fitted with a 200-grit diamond burnishing pad followed by a 400-grit pad with a little 400 grit honing powder which left the surface smooth, silky and ready for the application of a sealer. Finally, we acid washed the whole area using Tile Doctor Acid Gel, a slow release product which would neutralise any remaining chemicals, improve new sealer adhesion and inhibit the future production of any efflorescence salts. We had used a fair amount of water during the cleaning process, so we left the floor to dry off thoroughly overnight with assistance from our commercial dehumidifier. On our return the following day, we discussed the sealer options with the client and recommended using microporous Tile Doctor Colour Grow which is an impregnating sealer that seeps into the pores of the stone protecting it from within. It will provide an excellent fluid resistant seal whilst enhancing the natural colours in the stone, additionally it’s fully breathable thereby enabling any moisture trapped under the floor to rise through the floor and evaporate. This is important on old floors like this where no damp-proof membrane was installed. The sealer was applied with a paint pad in tow coats and allowed to dry for an hour before buffing the floor with a hog’s hair pad to give a rich natural-look sheen finish. The Victorian tiles responded well to the treatments which were completed in two consecutive days. My client was extremely pleased with the results and left the following comment: “My floor was in poor condition after being buried under carpet as well as many, many years of paint and muck. I enjoyed the time they spent at my home and wouldn’t hesitate to use (or recommend) the Tile Doctor service in the future.” Nick White Norfolk Tile Doctor
