Inspiration for a large contemporary bedroom remodel in New Orleans

The vertical sign sets a constant pace on all the fronts. The sliding worktop, together with the wooden bins, create new dynamics of life. Technology contains technology, thus losing its purely stage value, creating a stronger relation with the adjacent area of the kitchen. Modular configurations, laid against the wall or arranged as an island, are placed with grace and simplicity, returning the scene to the person who lives in it as the central focus. The space maintains a formal purity and intangible lightness where one can deftly move around amidst taste, flavours and the senses.

Inside, we started with laminated beams and a structural steel beam to open up the floor plan. Our finish design stayed true to an overall transitional theme, with dashes of contemporary flavor throughout. Simple and elegant white, grey, and oak tones paired well with shaker style cabinetry and custom woodwork. Natural white oak floors showcased the open floor plan, while rich coffered ceilings brought it to life. My clients were'early pioneers in a low-density 1940's working class neighborhood that quickly transitioned to its current status as an up-scale higher-density enclave of [cool] townhouses close to downtown. The resulting, much-published, AIA state and local award-winning design assumes an industrial flavor in direct response to the materials and ambience the clients wanted: a light-filled, open-plan living space with exposed wood structure, pine 2x sub-flooring, exposed ductwork and conduit, metal and stucco exterior siding, finished concrete floors on floor 1 and metal sash windows all around. We love courtyard garden design projects because there’s more to them than meets the eye. For example, we’re often asked to improve courtyard garden biodiversity. But many clients also want us to prioritise easy maintenance. Furthermore, in many city gardens, we also have to be sensitive to existing architectural designs. Obviously, this can pose a challenge when designing contemporary courtyards for listed buildings. And this applies to both hard landscaping and soft landscaping elements. A beautiful Transitional kitchen design with Traditional elements. A decorative wood hood with tile insert details was incorporated over the range. X mullion stacked upper cabinetry with glass and LED lighting highlights this impressive feature. Magic corner & corner drawers base storage cabinets were used to maximize storage in the base corner locations. Existing drywall vent cover & wire rack closet pantry was removed and cabinet pantries were cleverly used to house vent and allow a storage of narrow items around the vent while full depth storage was accessible by the old closet area. Bar storage drawers were added to the wine cooler area. Fridge & Freezer were enclosed with cabinetry materials and an added narrow pantry for spice storage. Products used were Miralis cabinetry, Fully Integrated Liebherr Fridge & Freezer, LED cabinetry & ceiling lighting, Silestone Altair quartz tops, C-Tech Lucerne Ice White Quartzo sink, Vent a Hood blower and Walker Zanger vintage Oyster backsplashes that added a beautiful flavor to the kitchen. The Missing Middle. A unique development in the Moodyville neighbourhood of North Vancouver. Working with Tina Hubert Architect, and Design Studio 8, we’ve completed a development project that fits the Missing Middle to a tee, and mix in our unique flavour of energy-efficient building. We’ve subdivided a 66′ wide, duplex-zoned lot into two new lots. One lot has a 700 sq. foot laneway home and a 2600 square foot main home. The other lot has two detached 1800 square foot homes, and a shared garage. We’re up to our usual tricks here: each of the homes we have built is 40% better than building code in terms of energy efficiency, and we’re aiming to have them certified Built Green Platinum, and three of the four homes have received the Energy Star rating. We’re excited to have brought together energy-efficient housing with a building style that revitalizes neighbourhoods and promotes diversity!

This 4,000-square foot home is located in the Silverstrand section of Hermosa Beach, known for its fabulous restaurants, walkability and beach access. Stylistically, it’s coastal-meets-traditional, complete with 4 bedrooms, 5.5 baths, a 3-stop elevator and a roof deck with amazing ocean views. The client, an art collector, wanted bold color and unique aesthetic choices. In the living room, the built-in shelving is lined in luminescent mother of pearl. The dining area’s custom hand-blown chandelier was made locally and perfectly diffuses light. The client’s former granite-topped dining table didn’t fit the size and shape of the space, so we cut the granite and built a new base and frame around it. The bedrooms are full of organic materials and personal touches, such as the light raffia wall-covering in the master bedroom and the fish-painted end table in a college-aged son’s room—a nod to his love of surfing. Detail is always important, but especially to this client, so we searched for the perfect artisans to create one-of-a kind pieces. Several light fixtures were commissioned by an International glass artist. These include the white, layered glass pendants above the kitchen island, and the stained glass piece in the hallway, which glistens blues and greens through the window overlooking the front entrance of the home. The overall feel of the house is peaceful but not complacent, full of tiny surprises and energizing pops of color.

Inspired by a wide variety of architectural styles, the Yorkdale is truly unique. The hipped roof and nearby decorative corbels recall the best designs of the 1920s, while the mix of straight and curving lines and the stucco and stone add contemporary flavor and visual interest. A cameo window near the large front door adds street appeal. Windows also dominate the rear exterior, which features vast expanses of glass in the form of oversized windows that look out over the large backyard as well as inviting upper and lower screen porches, both of which measure more than 300 square feet. This 1924 beauty deserved a well planned and carefully detailed main level remodel. My goal for this project was to restore some of the original design flavors and mix with modern day living and materials. Removing the wall between kitchen and dining space allowed the Gravelly Lake view to be absorbed from every angle. By carrying similar colors, styles and materials around the different rooms the home now has a cohesive style.
