This bathroom from Marfa’s Modern captures the spirit of artistic modernism with bold geometry and subtle organic touches. A striking black and white tile pattern defines the shower, lending graphic energy to the otherwise serene space. The brass fixtures and wall-mounted faucet introduce warmth and contrast, while soft natural light enhances the textured plaster walls. Artful details—a striped robe, curated wall art, and a sculptural vase—tie the room’s creative aesthetic together. The result is a bathroom that feels both modern and handcrafted, where every surface tells a story of design intention and desert-inspired artistry.

Set in a quiet neighborhood and framed by mature trees, this residence presented a unique opportunity: to thoughtfully evolve a custom mid-century modern home into a space that supports the everyday rhythms of a growing family. With a deep respect for the home’s original architecture, Klopf Architecture reimagined the house to better meet the needs of its owners—introducing functional improvements while preserving the spirit and character of its mid-century roots.
The clients approached Klopf Architecture with a clear vision: refresh their home while seamlessly integrating new programmatic elements. Key goals included clarifying and enhancing the entry sequence; connecting the detached garage to the main house with a practical yet architecturally intentional intervention; adding functional spaces such as a mudroom and laundry room; expanding and remodeling the primary suite’s bathroom and closet; and creating a more engaging outdoor space that capitalized on the site’s impressive views, featuring a fire pit and outdoor kitchen.
As a couple with distinct yet complementary perspectives—one focused on modern functionality and technology, and the other dedicated to preserving the home’s architectural integrity—their collaboration with Klopf Architecture resulted in a solution that harmonized both ideals. Their shared commitment to improving the livability of their home led to a design dialogue rooted in balance. This dynamic partnership shaped the direction of the renovation, ensuring that every decision honored the spirit of the original home while aligning with the practical needs of their growing family.
Designing within the constraints of the sloped site posed one of the project’s central challenges. The detached garage sat at a higher elevation than the main house, requiring a solution that ensured architectural and geometric compatibility between the two structures. Rather than create a purely utilitarian link, Klopf Architecture introduced an intentional connection that contributes to the overall architectural language. A notable pinch point in the plan—where differing geometries converged—was treated as a hinge point, turning a potentially awkward juncture into an architectural feature. This area now functions as both a transition and a moment of design interest that unifies the overall plan.
The design also addressed the underutilized outdoor area, which was located in a shadowed portion of the site with geometrical limitations. A new connection to the rear deck was created in this same area, making the outdoor space more useful and inviting. Klopf Architecture introduced carefully positioned openings and spatial improvements that forged a strong visual and functional connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. The outdoor area now reads as a deliberate extension of the home, embracing natural light and emphasizing the dramatic views.
Working through multiple design iterations, Klopf Architecture crafted a solution that preserved the architectural language of the original home while supporting the functional needs of modern life. The garage-to-house connection became more than a passage—it evolved into an architectural moment of transition. A new mudroom and laundry space enhanced convenience without compromising the clean lines of the design. The primary suite was expanded to create a private, serene retreat. The reimagined backyard, complete with fire pit and kitchen, now plays a vital role in the family’s daily routine and social life.
Outcomes and Lasting Impact
The result is a home that balances heritage with contemporary design, technical precision with design sensibility. The redesign not only met the clients’ initial goals but also exceeded expectations in its ability to seamlessly blend past and present, function and beauty, making the outdoor kitchen a favorite gathering place.
Beyond aesthetics, the renovation has significantly improved daily life for the family. The newly integrated garage connection has streamlined routines, providing a seamless transition between arriving home, storing belongings, and entering the main living spaces. The expanded primary suite offers a retreat-like atmosphere, creating a private space to unwind at the end of the day. The redesigned outdoor areas have also become an extension of their lifestyle—whether it's casual family dinners around the fire pit, entertaining friends in the outdoor kitchen, or simply enjoying the view from the reimagined backyard.
Through a thoughtful and strategic approach, the house has been successfully evolved into a home that remains true to its mid-century modern roots while enhancing livability, functionality, and the overall quality of life for the modern-day owners.

Striking geometry sets off the glittering flourishes of this avante garde collection. Waterloo’s strong silhouette is enhanced with inspired embellishments. Cut-crystal prisms scatter the warm light of glass-sleeved candlesticks, refracting a playful cast of light across the mirror-finish of Polished Nickel surfaces. Vintage cues, like white cloth wiring inside the transparent glass sleeves, link this fresh style to an earlier era of design innovation. Waterloo’s pieces are at once forward-looking and rooted in the timeless idea that beauty stems from fantastic features.

The top is always in transparent glass with four sizes to choose from. Manufactured By Cattelan Italia.

This remarkable freestanding elliptical staircase creates a spectacular architectural moment. Three flights rise gracefully through the house, featuring soft light-stained oak treads and handrail that blend seamlessly with the home's hardwood flooring. Crisp white stringers and risers provide a clean foundation, allowing the natural wood warmth to shine. The defining feature is the geometric black wrought-iron balusters. It is the contrast between organic curves and precise geometry, natural wood and forged metal, that creates a staircase that's both elegant and dramatic.

This visually simple, modern solution is unique within its suburban context, and gives this family the custom landscape of their dreams. The homeowners’ wish list included a modern design and clearly defined spaces: a larger dining patio, firepit patio, hot tub, and a 4-season sport court (which gets flooded for ice hockey in the winter).
Circulation and screening were key in Ground One’s landscape design. A sport court could overwhelm the entire backyard, so it was raised three feet above the primary backyard to physically separate different spaces, and minimize its visual impact. Rectangular bluestone in a running bond pattern was used in all the gathering spaces (dining, firepit, hot tub). Bluestone walls reinforce a simple material palette.
A larger dining patio was installed near the house for greater entertaining flexibility. Plank paver paths connect to a private hot tub area and allow kids to don hockey gear and enter the sport court without messing up the house. The firepit patio is at the back of the property, nestled into the existing hillside under a large oak and below the sport court terrace.
Plantings reinforce the geometry of each gathering space, provide focal points, and create layers of screening and separation from any given vantage point. Hardy species were selected for their low-maintenance requirements and various seasons of interest. Landscape lighting was incorporated to provide way finding between the patios, accent various hardscape elements, and highlight the trees.

The Detray Residence introduced an open contemporary design to an otherwise traditional context: a historic Brooklyn Heights townhouse. RSVP Studio converted the existing two bedroom duplex into a three bedroom, 2-1/2 bath apartment by relocating all of the common functions to the existing attic level, inverting the typical duplex layout. Utilizing the unique geometry of the pitched attic space, the open kitchen, dining and living room is illuminated from skylights and an expansive glass light shaft, creating a loft-like experience. A new entry foyer with an enlarged stair opening to the attic directs the flow of circulation into the common space, while maintaining the privacy of the third floor bedrooms.Location: Brooklyn Heights, Brooklyn Completion: Summer 2006 Size: 1500 s.f. Originally designed by Victoria architect, James Hull in 1892, this two-story Shingle-Style house had long been abandoned and neglected, until the current owner purchased the home in 2007. The house is an important resource in the history of Cuero, Texas. It is a distinctive, late Victorian residence that complements the various architectural styles found in the Terrell-Reuss National Register District in Cuero, Texas. The style of the house is based upon a Queen Anne floor plan, but has strong Shingle style elements and several Colonial Revival details that make it unique to Cuero and South Texas. The design for the house skillfully merged the complex geometries and numerous diverse materials into a consummate Victorian composition. Fisher Heck was commissioned to restore the house in 2009. Almost everything inside and outside the house, down to the studs, had to be rebuilt or refinished. All work was done in conjunction with the Secretary of Interior's Standards for Historic Restoration.

The starting point for our brown and blue colour scheme was the striped fabric we chose for the petite corner chairs. Deep brown on the walls, drapery and upholstered headboard lends a hushed tone to the space, ideal for a bedroom. The calm blue makes the 8' high ceiling seem higher. Contrast crown moulding accentuates the interesting geometry of the window bay.

The exemplary rendition of natural fine wood graining and contemporary colorations raises the bar in the wood-look porcelain hierarchy. These luxe linears connote refined/understated traditional waxed woods that have been revitalized with energized shades to fit right in with current residential and hospitality trends for graceful geometries. The natural warmth and tactile appeal of the noble walnuts and teaks that inspired the series are beautifully translated to rectified, easy-care, color-body porcelain.
