For this project, we drastically increased the square footage of this urban Chicago Style bungalow. With a complete 1st floor layout change including an open stairwell and open floor plan, and the expansion of the attic into a full second story addition (adding 3 bedrooms and two full baths to the home), this home became more spacious and livable. We installed a brand new kitchen with modern finishes with a light grey shaker island, and custom vanities cast in tile to give this home a sleek finish. By redigging the basement to heighten the ceilings, and upgrading it into a family area/rec room complete with another bedroom and a bathroom, the basement transformed from a storage unit to an inviting space in the home.

Our update of this brick condo was one of our urban projects in which we showcased our design skills, transforming the interior of the home to achieve both heightened style and practical livability.

**Spatial Composition & Architectural Volume** This is an exercise in the architecture of the alcove — a vanity niche carved from a continuous run of full-height oak joinery, its recess reading less as furniture placed against a wall than as volume subtracted from mass. The composition is governed by a strict orthogonal discipline: the reveal-jointed cabinet stiles establish a vertical rhythm that the photographer's oblique sightline compresses into layered planes, while the cantilevered vanity slab introduces a single decisive horizontal that arrests the vertical drift. The niche is capped by a soffited overhead panel, giving the recess a deliberate lintel and lending the aperture the proportional gravitas of a doorway. Depth is orchestrated through nested framing: the pocketed sliding door in the foreground crops the scene, the joinery reveal frames the alcove, and the full-height mirror frames a reflected secondary volume — a window, a Roman shade, a second bloom — extending the room's apparent envelope well beyond its physical bounds. To the right, the plane pivots into a marble-clad wall and a deeply reveal-set casement whose broad oak jamb and stool are detailed with the same tectonic logic as the millwork, unifying opening and cabinetry into a single architectural grammar. Above, a recessed perimeter shadow-gap ceiling floats the plaster plane free of the wall, dematerializing the junction and heightening the sense of contained, cabin-like intimacy. **Materiality, Color & Texture** The palette is narrow, warm, and rigorously controlled — a study in tonal adjacency rather than contrast. Rift-sawn white oak dominates, its cathedral and straight-grain figure deliberately book-matched and run vertically to accentuate height, finished in a matte, low-sheen sealer that reads as raw yet refined; note the subtle chromatic modulation between the honeyed door leaves, the slightly cooler carcass panels, and the pale, almost bleached drawer fronts, a gradient that provides articulation without resorting to hue shift. Against this, the Calacatta- or Carrara-type marble wainscot introduces a cool, silvery counterpoint, its soft grey veining offering the only real graphic incident in the field. The mirror surround — a hand-cast, rope-twist metal frame in polished nickel or silvered bronze — supplies a jewel-like glint and a moment of organic, almost baroque relief against the sobriety of the flat panels, echoed in the pair of églomisé or reverse-painted glass insets set flush into the alcove wall like recessed cabochons. Textiles are handled with restraint: a raw-silk or textured linen Roman shade in a tobacco-taupe stacks in generous, softly rumpled folds, while the swivel chair is upholstered in a taut, sueded greige leather whose sculpted, scrolled back offers the room's most sensuous curve. The tan saddle-leather tray and the milk-glazed ceramic bud vase complete a haptic register that moves from cool stone to warm hide to matte ceramic to silken wood. **Lighting, Atmosphere & Style Profile** Illumination is almost entirely daylit and side-cast, with the diffused southern wash filtered through the linen shade to produce a luminous, shadowless bloom across the marble and a raking, grain-revealing light along the oak. The design conspicuously withholds decorative fixtures; instead, light is architecturalized — the églomisé panels flanking the mirror function as concealed backlit apertures, glowing softly to provide flattering vertical face-lighting at the vanity, while the perimeter ceiling reveal implies a cove source for ambient wash. This suppression of visible hardware is central to the atmosphere: serene, hushed, and hotel-like in its precision, yet domesticated by the flowers and the intimate scale of the nook. Stylistically the project synthesizes into a refined **Soft Minimalism with a couture-modernist inflection** — the reductive planarity and reveal-detailing of contemporary minimalism warmed by mid-century Scandinavian wood craft and elevated by discreet Art Deco–adjacent flourishes in the metalwork and glass. It is a vocabulary of quiet luxury, where value is signaled not through ornament but through the tolerances of the joinery, the calibration of tone-on-tone, and the confidence to let a single ranunculus carry the room's only note of chroma.

The Kitchen opens to the Dining Area that provides access to deck and backyard. Adjacent to the Kitchen is the Great Room with cozy gas fireplace with wall-to-ceiling stone in the Great Room. On the way up to the 2nd floor, a built-in window seat adorns the stairway landing. On the 2nd floor are all 4 bedrooms, 2 full baths, convenient laundry room, and a spacious rec room. The Owner’s Suite features craftsman style wainscoting accent wall, an expansive closet, and private bathroom with 5’ shower, and double bowl vanity with cultured marble top.

Originally built in 1938, this bungalow cottage had enduring character, but its traditional closed kitchen layout – typical of the era – didn’t align with the way the homeowners envisioned living in the space. Inspired by their travels through England’s Cotswolds, the French countryside, and Carmel’s whimsical Storybook Cottages by the Sea, the homeowners dreamed of a home that captured the romance of cottages and one that would seamlessly connect with their stunning English-style garden. After years of attempting to reimagine the kitchen in its original location the homeowners realized it would never truly suit the way they lived & wanted to entertain. The original kitchen was historical & was built when the kitchen was the last room you wanted guests to see. It was tucked into the front corner of the home off a hallway leading to the main level bedrooms and bath. To reach the dining room, you passed through a servery swing door, then continued into the living room. While the original door had charm, it disrupted the flow and connection between the kitchen and the main living areas. To bring the homeowners’ vision to life, the design called for a bold move—relocating the kitchen entirely. We designed a 560-square-foot addition off the living room – placing the kitchen at the heart of the home and connecting it to the gardens. The new space includes a sunlit breakfast nook, a charming butler’s pantry, a garden vestibule with its own entry porch, and a wraparound porch that encourages indoor-outdoor living. The main level remodel also redefined existing spaces: the old dining room was transformed into a cozy study library, while a former bedroom became an elegant dining room just off the new kitchen. Every design decision honored the home’s original 1938 architecture and character. Matching the home’s original 1.5-story proportions, the new kitchen wing was designed with intersecting gables that echo the scale and pitch of the existing roofline. A stone-wrapped chimney topped with a handcrafted copper cap is straight from the pages of a storybook. Decorative corbels, intricate window trim, and cedar shake in the gable ends further connect the new architecture to the home’s historic detailing. Finishes and fixtures were thoughtfully chosen to marry the home’s moodier, character-rich original rooms with the brighter, lighter new spaces. The result is a timeless transformation that feels as though it has always been part of the home – an enchanting blend of storybook charm, functional design, and garden-centered living. At the ground level, a Pennsylvania bluestone porch and stone skirting ground the addition in traditional materials. Inside, a tongue-and-groove ceiling with hand-hewn beams gives purpose and intimacy to the heightened kitchen ceiling. The home’s signature arched openings were meticulously replicated in the new kitchen, breakfast nook, and dining room, ensuring a seamless transition between old and new. A young family from the Bay Area moved to Portland into a much larger home. They brought with them some art and furnishings and an appreciation for Tuscany. In the new home we began with one fabric that hit the tone they wanted: you can see it in the dining room window treatments. The furniture that attracted them, after an initial foray into typical Tuscan styles, was on the contemporary side of things; so we created a relaxed blending: Floors were stained darker. Lots of antique bronze, dark woods and rich fabrics live happily with craftsman lighting and tan walls. More modern Transitional seating in oatmeal and off-white actually create islands of rest and repose; they heighten the room’s nature by contrast. Our eclectic range of styles work because they share a tonal character. We found a rug in reds and blues that was more traditional and dramatic, which connected well with our inspiration fabric. So we were on a roll. Other pieces, including the exciting room divider (the ship) fell into place, as the clients took the elevations and plans with them on various shopping excursions (which were fun because they had the road map to provide a happy level of guidance). This space, as with the other rooms we designed for the home, exemplifies sprezzatura — a relaxed style that looks as if it has been created by (great taste) over time. Yes, indeed!

Chic and clean minimalist Central Park West apartment with sensational Park views high over the tree tops. Modern furniture adorns the living and dining room areas. Beige leather and dark brown wood chairs with saddle stitching surround custom dark brown Holly Hunt bases below a custom limestone table top. The side tables, also in dark brown by Holly Hunt, blend with the leather and wood Liagre coffee table. L-shape sofa is custom with a soft Chenille fabric and leather trim. The window cornices are dark brown leather and the wood blinds are custom colored to match the walls. The light fixtures are from Austria, WOKA. The architectural framing device separating the kitchen from dining area enhances the division of spaces, while bridging them together. The ottomans pick up on the sofa fabric and tie the living and dining areas together. A raised ceiling gives a heightened feeling to the space with another WOKA fixture illuminating the area. A custom designed area carpet ties the conversational area together.

The oak flooring, salvaged from a historic building, stands in stark contrast to the immaculate white surroundings, adding a hint of warmth. The stylish chair and meticulously designed mirror heighten the loft-style space's high-end appeal, while an exposed brick wall breathes new life into chic urban living.

For this small Toronto condo, our main goal was to heighten function while adding our client’s personal style throughout. To create a more spacious and welcoming feel focused on furniture with clean lines, minimal accents, a comfortable sectional to seat multiple guests, and an artwork display creates a welcoming relaxed interior. For the bedroom, we chose a black and white color palette with layered textures and patterns. A deep red throw gives the room a burst of rich color! Here, our clients hoped to introduce a mix of modern elements to their traditional country home. The space was remodelled from top to bottom as we accommodated the varying objectives of the homeowners. Structurally, this included installing coffer ceilings and elongating select windows to reach the floor. These windows, as well as heightened ceilings, make the most out of the light for this East-facing home, which is finally a fitting welcome for the glorious morning sun. Moving through the home, modern touches can be found throughout, especially in the kitchen and main living areas. A stylish wood-front fireplace provides the perfect place to gather and relax, while a newly optimized kitchen with an array of strategically positioned storage spaces, modern accoutrements, and traditional mouldings makes entertaining a breeze. Accessibility and the ability to age in place was another priority for this couple. To achieve both, we ensured our clients’ essentials were designed for the main floor. The installation of a roll-in and barrier-free steam shower, and small accommodative features like the sliding ladder in the roomy walk-in closet ensure this space will stand the test of time. Now a beautiful, functional, and elegant space, this couple no longer need to consider moving from the place they've so lovingly called home.
