A mosaic of shifting concrete slabs, set in a field of limestone bands and chip seal, flows through screens of bamboo, set in motion by the slightest breeze. The implied motion of the ground plane blurs the boundary where the terrace and parking court meet, serving the dual purpose of expanded entertaining area or overflow parking during large gatherings. The clipped formal hedge that folds around the house and delineates the lawn stands in stark opposition to the unrestrained hemlock forest that envelops the property, heightening the contrast between the two. Designed by Bryan Anderson This kitchen renovation was driven by a desire to create a space for semi-formal dining in a small eat-in kitchen. By removing an imposing central island with range, and expanding a perimeter dropped soffit, we created a well-proportioned space in which to center a table for gathering. The expanded soffit cleaned up awkward angles at the ceiling and implies a thickness to the wall from which the kitchen is carved out. Small, flexible appliances enable full cooking potential, and modular cabinets provide highly functional features in minimal space. Ebony stained base cabinets recede, white-washed upper cabinets and panels reflect light, large-format ceramic counters and backsplash withstand culinary abuse, European oak flooring and accents provide warmth, and all combine under a ceiling of metallic paper to envelop users and guests in functional comfort. When the Gimbels department store chain closed in 1986, many of its selling floors were converted into luxury apartments, including those of this branch at 86th Street and Lexington Avenue. The retailer’s soaring ceilings allowed Axis Mundi to create bedroom mezzanine spaces overlooking the living and dining rooms. Defining them with translucent glass welcomed natural light while retaining privacy. Downstairs, spaces bleed one into another, their basic monochromatic black-and-white palette acting as a unifying leitmotif. Yet each space feels distinct, with its own programmatic purpose, a feat largely achieved by varying floor and wall treatments—a graphic tile pattern in the entry, a red wall in the hall leading to the master suite, a colorful area rug in the living room. In the retailer’s heyday, the then-common saying, “Would Macy’s tell Gimbels?” implied the strategies the competitors kept from each other to gain the upper hand. Here, a structure iconic in its day also conceals something: a handsome, wholly contemporary repurposing that represents just the sort of innovation that made Gimbels the celebrated name that it was.

The double height front entry opens to the right and left into a dining room and the music room, seen here. The family was musical, and the room contained not only an excellent grand piano, but also other instruments played by the growing children. The red armchair is from the set used in the kitchen around the handmade farm table, but only pulled into the kitchen as needed. The arms of the red, simple armchair extend a welcome. I love to put armchairs in entries because their arms always imply a hug to visitors! The antique demilune table was brought by the family from their home in London. The red colors in the Oriental rug immediately give a joyous announcement of welcome at the front door, while being immensely practical. The oriental rugs, if protected by good pads underneath, will last for centuries. The music room beyond echoes the red of the orientals, and the deep taupe on the entry walls is echoed in a rough raw silk texture on the relaxed Roman shades in the music room. Drapery would have been too repetitive of the dining room on the opposite side. A cream tufted leather Edwardian sofa carries the English theme into the music room beyond.

It feels appropriately sized for its site and is well detailed. It’s by far the best of the Shingle Style submittals.” The project is a new construction of a family compound consisting of two new houses and associated site development along South Beach. Due to the topography of the nearby dunes, the living spaces of the main and guest houses were located on the second floor in order to gain the panoramic views of the ocean and extended coastline beyond. The challenge was to create a shingle-style island vernacular architecture that did not reflect the upside-down nature of the primary living space. The inspiration was based on the desire to take a large program and break it into smaller architectural elements based on the idea that the homes could have originally been constructed in the 1920s or 1930s and then added onto over time. This concept of "implied history" is one that creates a legacy of a seaside architecture from the rich history of New England’s past, yet has evolved into how people want to live today. The Marvin products, with their hurricane-resistant capabilities, were a clear choice based on this locale. The use of the folding door systems allowed for the ease of flow from indoor to outdoor spaces in a timeless way.
