This unique lakefront home situated in north western New Jersey is the inspiration of the owner who wanted to create a comfortable and elegant retreat. The goal was to optimize the scenic aspect of the lake front site and improving the design and flow of the living space. It was important to preserve the character of the original rustic lake cabin and retain many of the details unique to homes built in the area in the 1950’s. Modern amenities were incorporated with an emphasis on energy efficiency and sustainability.

Complete kitchen remodel that included replacing old cabinets, installing new quartz countertops, and updating the layout to improve functionality and flow. The project involved relocating appliances, modifying plumbing and electrical connections, and removing the existing bulkhead to create a cleaner ceiling appearance. New tile flooring was installed throughout the kitchen, along with modern recessed lighting to enhance brightness and improve the overall design. The final result is a contemporary kitchen with improved layout, better lighting, and a modern finish that increases both comfort and home value.

This project was designed to provide both high function and high style while optimizing the influx of natural light from the enlarged kitchen windows. We maximized the space and created an open floor plan that improved traffic flow between the adjacent rooms. By removing interior walls and installing a structural moment frame, the existing kitchen was transformed to open through to the existing dining room and the new family room addition. Relocating the stair from the basement to the main floor and stacking it beneath the one leading to the second floor allowed for an improved use of available square footage to improve storage, layout and flow.

Built in 1997, this home’s original kitchen had great bones, but an impractical appliance and cabinetry layout obstructed the room’s natural flow, necessitating a makeover to improve form and function. A new appliance arrangement, custom cabinetry, and updated finishes resulted in a wow-worthy space that is as functional as it is stylish.

This kitchen was relocated to another area of the home to improve space utilization and flow. An abundance of natural light was a welcome benefit.

Tired of doing laundry in an unfinished rugged basement? These homeowner's were as well! They contacted Castle to help them with their basement planning and build for a finished laundry space and new bathroom with shower. After the designer and client walked through ideas to improve flow of space, we decided to eliminate the existing 1/2 bath in the family room, and move the new bathroom into the existing laundry room. The full laundry room was finished to include new walls, ceilings, new plumbing, new Adura luxury vinyl tile flooring, beautiful shaker style cabinetry with beadboard panel, Glossy white Cultured marble countertops, a new Blanco composite sink, and Kohler Bellera faucet. In the new bathroom space, we continued the Adura luxury vinyl flooring. Finishes in the bathroom include Kohler Memoirs pedestal sink, Kohler Archer faucet, custom hex tile shower floor, subway tile walls, and custom frameless glass shower enclosure. Additional improvements were made to improve the health of the home including asbestos tile abatement, new drain tile and sump pump, new spray foam insulation, new glass block window, and a new Panasonic bathroom fan. We also decided to save and restore some original pieces in the home like their existing 5-panel doors and repurposing one salvaged door into a pocket door for the new bathroom. The homeowner completed the basement finish with new carpeting in the family room. The whole basement feels fresh, new, and has a great flow. They will enjoy their happy and healthy home for years to come.

Winner of the 2018 Tour of Homes Best Remodel, this whole house re-design of a 1963 Bennet & Johnson mid-century raised ranch home is a beautiful example of the magic we can weave through the application of more sustainable modern design principles to existing spaces. We worked closely with our client on extensive updates to create a modernized MCM gem. Extensive alterations include: - a completely redesigned floor plan to promote a more intuitive flow throughout - vaulted the ceilings over the great room to create an amazing entrance and feeling of inspired openness - redesigned entry and driveway to be more inviting and welcoming as well as to experientially set the mid-century modern stage - the removal of a visually disruptive load bearing central wall and chimney system that formerly partitioned the homes’ entry, dining, kitchen and living rooms from each other - added clerestory windows above the new kitchen to accentuate the new vaulted ceiling line and create a greater visual continuation of indoor to outdoor space - drastically increased the access to natural light by increasing window sizes and opening up the floor plan - placed natural wood elements throughout to provide a calming palette and cohesive Pacific Northwest feel - incorporated Universal Design principles to make the home Aging In Place ready with wide hallways and accessible spaces, including single-floor living if needed - moved and completely redesigned the stairway to work for the home’s occupants and be a part of the cohesive design aesthetic - mixed custom tile layouts with more traditional tiling to create fun and playful visual experiences - custom designed and sourced MCM specific elements such as the entry screen, cabinetry and lighting - development of the downstairs for potential future use by an assisted living caretaker - energy efficiency upgrades seamlessly woven in with much improved insulation, ductless mini splits and solar gain

The owners of this home located in a historic Baltimore neighborhood wanted a much larger kitchen, and because they regularly entertained large numbers of guests, they wanted to improve flow throughout the house. The decision was made to create a gallery addition across the rear of the house, anchored at one end by a new kitchen addition. A dynamic 1-1/2 story breakfast room was created on axis with the entrance hall, and serves to bridge the kitchen and the gallery. A series of french doors allows the gallery to flow gracefully out to a new terrace, and a richly detailed coffered ceiling gives detail and rhythm to the fairly narrow gallery space.
