The 2025 Southern Living Idea House is a cozy retreat settled on five acres of woodsy land near Charlottesville, Virginia. The design and build teams infused Southern charm throughout the home using big windows, vibrant colors, and bold patterns. “[The goal of] this year’s Idea House was a richly detailed house that conveys a sense of permanence and calm,” said project architect Julie Dixon of Rosney Co. Architects. Large windows and doors from the Marvin Ultimate collection create charming vignettes of the surrounding countryside throughout the home and give this new build a classic look.

Classic meets Modern in this West Village historic home renovation! Preserving the character and architectural integrity of this home while updating it for this modern busy family, we infused the design with old world charm but make it hip. We started by ripping everything down to the studs, re-arranging the kitchen for a more open feel, adding an oversized accordion door facing the backyard, and adding a powder room where the hallway used to be. The updated open layout of the kitchen was created by removing a diving wall and adding an island with seating, housing the sink. The flat panel custom inset cabinetry is paired with the dramatic marble backsplash reaching the ceiling. Opposite the utilitarian area, is a custom built-in bench flanked by cabinetry to create a dining space along the table and Arteriors chairs.

Interior designer Emily Henderson collaborated with architect Annie Usher to design her brother’s house on the banks of the Willamette River near Portland, Oregon. The now-complete new build is described by Henderson as a “contemporary Pacific Northwest river cabin.” Henderson used windows from the Marvin Ultimate collection to frame the natural landscape surrounding the home and to let in plenty of natural light. Many of the windows are clad in White Oak, infusing the space with warmth and texture.

Located in San Rafael's sunny Dominican neighborhood, this East Coast-style brown shingle needed an infusion of color and pattern for a young family. Against the white walls in the combined entry and living room, we mixed mid-century silhouettes with bold blue, orange, lemon, and magenta shades. The living area segues to the dining room, which features an abstract graphic patterned wall covering. Across the way, a bright open kitchen allows for ample food prep and dining space. Outside we painted the poolhouse ombre teal. On the interior, we echoed the same fun colors of the home.

An exhilarating shift from a suburban traditional family home to a modern, high-rise condominium. We were excited to start with a clean slate and designed this 3,500sf space, transitioning this client into their next chapter. The suite was gutted down to concrete and studs, taking down several walls in the process. The design was influenced by the character and materials of a converted New York loft, and using the vernacular West Coast Modern language, it was infused with warm wood accents, exposed concrete, and framed views of the North Shore mountains.

This inviting living room exudes warmth and contemporary elegance, centered around a stunning travertine fireplace. The fireplace, with its arched opening and herringbone brick interior, serves as the focal point of the space, creating a cozy ambiance with its crackling fire. The clean lines and smooth texture of the travertine complement the soft, off-white walls, adding a touch of sophistication. Above the fireplace, a black-and-white coastal photograph framed in charcoal gray draws the eye upward, flanked by modern black sconces with brass accents that provide soft, ambient lighting. The simplicity of the artwork and lighting enhances the room’s serene atmosphere. A low, rustic coffee table made from interlocking pieces of reclaimed wood introduces an organic element, adding texture and depth.
