When you have an well-worn 80 year old house, whether its a a city apartment house, a place in the country, or a frat house like this one, what can you keep? What meets modern safety codes? What are the good features of the old place, that are worth the effort of keeping? The daylighting of the the house, especially the stair, was one of the best things in the house. A dormer, side windows, and this lovely arched window originally spilled light from the third floor all the way down through to the basement. You'd think that the one stair in the place would not be worth saving. Eight decades of heavy use by young guys, and stiffer life safety codes! But to our amazement, the original architect had done such a a sensible design, that the stair dimensions, including the baluster spacing, met 21st Century requirements. You can see where some of the replacement balusters of the repairs didn't quite match the old patina. To keep the arched window we needed to add an inner panel of plexiglass and the sprinkler head that shows in this photo. Located above the coast of Malibu, this two-story concrete and glass home is organized into a series of bands that hug the hillside and a central circulation spine. Living spaces are compressed between the retaining walls that hold back the earth and a series of glass facades facing the ocean and Santa Monica Bay. The name of the project stems from the physical and psychological protection provided by wearing reflective sunglasses. On the house the “glasses” allow for panoramic views of the ocean while also reflecting the landscape back onto the exterior face of the building. Conditioned only by sun, wind, and the woodstove, the room functions as a multi-purpose glazed porch. ​ Surrounding the 1950 house of a style so common in the New England Landscape, our client has worked for a decade to “re-wild” the suburban yard with plantings gathered on fieldtrips around the region. Turning its back to the house, this addition treads lightly into this rich and textured landscape. As the largest room in the house, it will host Thanksgiving dinner as well as it shelters quiet reading by the fire and cocktail parties in the gallery space and cookouts on the back porch. Aligned to extend our addition as close to the property line as bylaws permit, a diagonal wall also expresses the inside-outside connection’s incremental expansion to the North. Structure, shelter, enclosure, and fenestration act and and react to each other to modulate inhabitants’ relative senses of prospect and refuge. The Donna Dodson sculpture Redwing Rose was commissioned for the space.

Overlooking the tree-lined boulevard, this Lovett designed townhome feels light and spacious. A walled courtyard provides privacy for the first floor bedroom/study and welcomes you into the formal entry leading you upstairs. Well equipped to entertain, this open floor plan hosts the formal dining room, kitchen with breakfast nook and living room. The primary retreat has a generous sitting area and bathroom with double sinks separate shower, and jacuzzi tub to escape. The project is a series of mural panels painted in the artist’s studio and installed on all walls of a dining room. The imagery is of soft landscape with classical architectural elements, loosely based on an Arcadian 18th century French wallpaper scenic. The murals are painted in grisaille, a traditional technique which uses a monochromatic palette of grey to create depth. In this case the artist used the soft painterly style of Fragonard and Boucher to create the lush landscape in the same grey palette. The freshness and vitality of the brushwork distinguishes these murals from printed wall covering. Silver leaf detailing on the pilasters adds a luminous effect. This project won an Acanthus Award for excellence from the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art in 2014.

Ryan manages a corporate fitness center for Engines, Inc and they have installed Hercules Diamond Basketball System for employees. They play during their lunch hour and breaks (to get some exercise)! They love their basketball system. It is in their parking lot. The dimensions of the playing area are 50' x 65'. This is a Hercules Diamond Basketball System that was purchased in May of 2013. It was installed on a 50 ft wide by a 65 ft deep playing area in Jonesboro, AR.
