This Pied-a Terre in the city was designed to be a comfortable haven for this client. She loves to cook and interact with her husband at the same time. The main walls of the kitchen were removed to incorporate the entire living space. Sleek high end appliances were utilized to minimize the look of the kitchen and enhance a furniture look. Sleek European Cabinetry extends into the living space to create a media center that doubles as a buffet for the terrace. The tall monolithic column conceals the built in coffee machine on the kitchen side. The tiered soffits define the kitchen space while functionally allowing for recessed lighting. The warm chocolate and sand colored palette allows the kitchen to integrate cohesively with the remainder of the apartment.

For this project, the entire kitchen was designed around the “must-have” Lacanche range in the stunning French Blue with brass trim. That was the client’s dream and everything had to be built to complement it. Bilotta senior designer, Randy O’Kane, CKD worked with Paul Benowitz and Dipti Shah of Benowitz Shah Architects to contemporize the kitchen while staying true to the original house which was designed in 1928 by regionally noted architect Franklin P. Hammond. The clients purchased the home over two years ago from the original owner. While the house has a magnificent architectural presence from the street, the basic systems, appointments, and most importantly, the layout and flow were inappropriately suited to contemporary living. The new plan removed an outdated screened porch at the rear which was replaced with the new family room and moved the kitchen from a dark corner in the front of the house to the center. The visual connection from the kitchen through the family room is dramatic and gives direct access to the rear yard and patio. It was important that the island separating the kitchen from the family room have ample space to the left and right to facilitate traffic patterns, and interaction among family members. Hence vertical kitchen elements were placed primarily on existing interior walls. The cabinetry used was Bilotta’s private label, the Bilotta Collection – they selected beautiful, dramatic, yet subdued finishes for the meticulously handcrafted cabinetry. The double islands allow for the busy family to have a space for everything – the island closer to the range has seating and makes a perfect space for doing homework or crafts, or having breakfast or snacks. The second island has ample space for storage and books and acts as a staging area from the kitchen to the dinner table. The kitchen perimeter and both islands are painted in Benjamin Moore’s Paper White. The wall cabinets flanking the sink have wire mesh fronts in a statuary bronze – the insides of these cabinets are painted blue to match the range. The breakfast room cabinetry is Benjamin Moore’s Lampblack with the interiors of the glass cabinets painted in Paper White to match the kitchen. All countertops are Vermont White Quartzite from Eastern Stone. The backsplash is Artistic Tile’s Kyoto White and Kyoto Steel. The fireclay apron-front main sink is from Rohl while the smaller prep sink is from Linkasink. All faucets are from Waterstone in their antique pewter finish. The brass hardware is from Armac Martin and the pendants above the center island are from Circa Lighting. The appliances, aside from the range, are a mix of Sub-Zero, Thermador and Bosch with panels on everything.

This project reinvents a traditional San Francisco infill residence into a light filled, colorful modern home. The new design is modest in space but generous in material and detailing. An interactive relationship between the kitchen and living spaces was created with cabinetry that stretches to link the rooms spatially and functionally. The dynamic wall cabinet incorporates open and closed units in a varied, yet colorful modular composition to give variety and visual play. As a product of the couple’s strong belief in environmentally sensitive design, the remodel incorporates green building products and materials throughout. ©john todd

We design solutions that our clients interact with delight and daily use.

This was such a fun project to work on! We took out walls enclosing the previously windowless kitchen and changed the dynamic of the home. The client can cook, interact with kids and friends and see outside - all basic and important things to maintaining happiness.

Inspiration for a contemporary kitchen remodel in Ottawa

A home on top of a hill with amazing lake views provide the perfect setting for a beautiful "mountain mine" inspired pool with multiple ways to interact with - this active family will never be bored! There is an antique ore cart and rail system that seems to appear from an old mine and gives the homeowner a unique iced-beverage cart. There are boulder steps that lead up to another "mine" entrance that is actually the entrance to the underground slide. This view shows the swim-through grotto and natural boulder waterfall with a 14' diving ledge. Hand cut native stone with boulders integrated into the stone retaining wall provides additional patio space with a fire pit above the pool. In this kitchen, we updated the existing cabinets with new 3cm Cambria Canterbury Quartz countertops with a matching pass-through sill. A new Blanco Diamond double bowl sink in biscotti with Brizo single handle pull out faucet with Brilliance Brushed Bronze finish were installed. For the backsplash 3x6 Eternal Limestone in Jura Beige with SA60 Butternut Emperador linear mosaic tile and Xexon undercounter lighting.

design: Carrie Preston (Studio TOOP) and Jasper Helmantel (Cruydt Hoeck), 2011 location: Appeltern, NL status: built in 2012 by Appeltern Model Garden Complex photos: Jolanthe Lalkens, June 2013 Designed as assignment from both the Dutch gardening magazine Groei & Bloei and the television and radio nature program Vara's Vroege Vogels, this garden serves as a model of how homeowners can incorporate lots of plant life and wildlife into the design but without sacrificing practicality or aesthetics. The garden is deliberately contemporary in its style to emphasize that nature-rich gardens need not look a certain way - insects and birds don't care if the lines are straight or curved. At the same time the garden makes use of affordable, simple, no-nonsense materials. The 40x60 cm paving stones are one of the most common and affordable paving options in the Netherlands, available en masse for free on the Internet. Conceptually we imagined a garden completely paved with the tiles (as to many gardens are) and what would happen if took out some of these stones, used them to build benches and structure and added plants where the tiles had been. In the construction of the benches we include other materials such as bamboo sticks and insulation bricks that create habitat for insects such as solitary bees. The plant palette is based on a selection of native and host plants in combination with the 26 plants plan set up by Groei & Boei -- a list of plants aimed at making the use of more plants in gardens accessible and less intimidating. The choice for the number 26 corresponds with the number of letters in the alphabet in line with the famous Dutch garden designer Mien Ruy's comment that if we only need 26 letters to create a whole language, we should be able to combine and mix 26 plants to express far more than we think.

The upper guest suite features a more masculine, muted color scheme while still feeling fresh. With a full attached bathroom, the upper guest bedroom provides another flexible space perfect for a more secluded bedroom.
