The entry runner from Annie Selke is the perfect introduction to the house and its playful palette, adding a welcoming appeal. In the dining room, a beautiful, iconic Schumacher wallpaper was one of our happy finishes whose vines and garden colors begged for more vibrant colors to complement it. So we added bold green color to the trims, doors, and windows, enhancing the playful appeal. In the family room, we used a soft palette with pale blue, soft grays, and warm corals, reminiscent of pastel house palettes and crisp white trim that reflects the turquoise waters and white sandy beaches of Bermuda! The formal living room looks elegant and sophisticated, with beautiful furniture in soft blue and pastel green. The curtains nicely complement the space, and the gorgeous wooden center table anchors the space beautifully. Using the existing staircase as a unifying element, this three-story penthouse was transformed from a glum 1980’s renovation into a bright and welcoming home. Due to technical reasons, the existing stair to the roof could not be removed. Instead it was re-imagined by replacing much of the stairwell enclosure with vertical aluminum elements tied together with custom millwork. Glass risers and polished chrome hardware give the stair just the right amount of sparkle. The dilapidated and dark roof penthouse was removed and reinvented as an open, zinc-clad family room with expansive views of Boston’s Back Bay and South End. With the introduction of splashes of color and modern furnishings, this Victorian home has entered the 21st century.

Incorporated both French doors and Dutch doors, aiming to enhance the indoor-outdoor connection. The addition of custom decks and stairs from the bedroom to the laundry space and backyard suggests a functional and aesthetic upgrade to the outdoor spaces. The introduction of a custom brick step from the main bedroom french doors leads you to the outside seating area and shower that brings a rustic and coastal charming touch to the space. This not only improves accessibility but also creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Ginger's attention to detail is evident through the custom-designed copper light-up address signs. These signs not only serve a practical purpose but also add a distinctive and stylish element to the home's exterior. Similarly, the custom black iron lights guiding the pathways around the home contribute to the overall ambiance while providing safety and visibility. By combining functional design elements, thoughtful aesthetics, and custom craftsmanship, it seems like the firm and Ginger have worked together to transform the outdoor areas into a unique and appealing extension of the home.

Professional measuring, frequent liaison with my bespoke workroom to ensure that every last detail has been addressed, followed by expert installation completes the design process.

Nancy Knickerbocker of Reico Kitchen and Bath in Southern Pines, NC collaborated with Chis Sowell to design a transitional style kitchen design featuring Green Forest cabinetry. The kitchen cabinets are in the Park Place door style in a Sea Dance Green finish, complimented with Cambria Brittanicca Gold countertops. The kitchen also includes a Kohler faucet and MDC D Shape sink. "I had a fantastic experience with the design and installation team at Reico. They were professional, talented, and easy to work with. Our introduction to the Tahoe site was in late winter, on a clear sunny day with filtered light and long shadows through snow-laden fir and pine bows. It made a strong impression, stored for future consideration but the impetus for the design came soon after the spring snow melt. A powerful sense of horizontal layering of vegetation and various stages of decomposing downed timber on the two-acre site, juxtaposed with pine and fir trees and the dense canopy of the surrounding forest. The site is located near the historic 1960 Olympic Nordic track, situated on the edge of wetlands and seasonal streams. The homeowners were previous clients and dreamt of having a retreat in the Sierras away from their home base in Berkeley, CA. Among skiers, bike riders, hikers, and boaters, they found the ideal central location for their home base near Lake Tahoe. The home is organized as a series of linked spaces, each providing a unique sensory experience and connection to different parts of the site, both vertically and horizontally. The design includes extensive use of glass to create a true indoor/outdoor connection and maximize natural light. At the center of the site are two large fir trees, which the building respectfully wraps around in an L shape to create a focal point in the landscaped courtyard. A refined, context-driven palette of natural materials including cedar, oak, fir, and steel is used to harmoniously blend in among the surroundings. The construction includes advanced details such as thermally broken steel beams supporting layered roof planes engineered to hold snow rather than shed it. Designed to resist significant load, we exposed the steel structure as a recurring element in the interior spaces. The resulting columns and support beams contribute to the familiar design aspects of each room and provide a better understanding of how the building was constructed. The second floor features cantilevered volumes that reach out into the nearby evergreen limbs, likening the experience to being in a tree house. The house incorporates features such as radiant heating, solar panels, and operable windows for passive cooling. Fire safety measures include the use of naturally fire-resistant materials, a Class A roof construction, sprinklers, and drought-tolerant landscaping beyond the defensible space.

Nestled on the shore of New Hampshire’s Lake Winnipesaukee, is a family’s winter ski retreat. Contrary to the norm, this vacation home sees more use in the winter months than in the summer season. Breathtaking views of Mount Washington against a backdrop of shoreline dominate the scene; this vista was a driving force in the decision-making process. Doors and windows on the lakeside of the house were enlarged and expanded on to enhance the owners’ appreciation of their vantage point. The homeowners embraced, with a bit of convincing, a dark blue trim color for the exterior rather than the ubiquitous forest green common in the White Mountains. What began as a small renovation project morphed into a full renovation; the location warranted the upgrade. The client’s trust in the design team resulted in a home that is unique: contemporary while still offering the warmth and coziness of a winter retreat. The introduction of soft wood tones, a custom copper kitchen hood, and a warm muted color palate for interior trim and doors brings a coziness to the space without evoking a mountain ski lodge. The materials chosen further enhanced the natural elements of the site location: organic features include an antler chandelier, salvaged wood throughout for the mantel, ceilings, stair newels, and interior barn doors, and a live edge built-in bench in the mudroom. Spaces were designed to encourage family interaction and togetherness. The importance of solitude was thoughtfully crafted into the architecture and interiors of the family’s vacation home. SV Design made sure there were spaces where individual family members can pursue their own interests: a dedicated craft space, a family office, and a kids’ loft area. The redesign was forward thinking, to take the family into future phases in life, from the current teenage years through college years, and into the beyond of expanded family possibilities.

The exterior materials used in the Ashwood Home will allow the homeowner to live without the headache of constant maintenance. The columns are all HB&G structural fiberglass. The siding is Nichiha fiber cement. The frieze details around the home are made up of many detailed pieces, all comprised of materials that will not rot. The porch floors and railing are Timbertech composite. The home was built with efficiency and indoor air quality in mind. The home has Marvin windows, spray foam insulation, efficient HVAC systems and energy recovery ventilators installed. The energy recovery ventilators keep the home feeling fresh and clean with the introduction filtered fresh air from outside.

The "Nautical Aqua Living Quarters" is one of our latest fan favorites that included an entryway, family room, dining room, play area, and kitchen space. The goal was to create a cohesive, warm and inviting space that this young family could enjoy. By utilizing some multi-functional storage elements, we created hidden spaces that helped organize kid toys. The introduction of the aqua color splash was a warm yet subtle pop that made everything visually flow.

With its decorative mouldings and traditional influences throughout the home, this renovation is a classic take on modernism. Approaching the gates to the property, rich red brick surrounds a beautiful traditional white lacquered timber door with lead lite coloured panels on either side. Entering into the home, deep jarrah planked timber floors lead the way through to the kitchen and living areas. The kitchen was small for my client who loved to cook as well as her daughter’s love for baking, needing a re- configure of the space to allow the kitchen to flow and function between the existing kitchen and small meals room. Outdated cabinetry made their home look tired and needed a fresh take on the newly architecturally extended home. Traditional pairings of fresh whites, marbles and glass are delicately detailed within the design, modernising the homes interior. Lacquered chalky slabbed fronts surrounded by marbled benches and splashbacks, the introduction of curves to the isolated hood and island centre piece and depth injected with deep navy to create a monochrome palette. Warmth is then allowed in by brass hardware, reeded glass, a play on texture with tiles and warmly lit surfaces. Now a cook’s kitchen.
