Inspiration for a transitional kitchen remodel in Philadelphia

Creating a functional dining area for a family that loves to entertain and have plenty of room to fit another person around the table. Banquette is upholstered in a linen look vinyl. Table top is Ceasarstone. Design and photo by Karla Trincanello.

This kitchen is the perfect example of how a space can be contemporary and warm and inviting. We utilized a two-tone cabinetry palette; the perimeter cabinets are a painted white MDF shaker door style and the island cabinetry is an Ethiopia stained raised panel Cherry wood. We brought in a warm-grey toned subway tile backsplash that extends up to the ceiling, and used the same tile to create a herringbone design feature above the range. We used accent tiles to add an extra detail throughout. This two-level counter is perfect for entertaining guests and spacious enough to seat at least four bar stools. Stainless appliances bring a more contemporary feel to the kitchen. Overall, the marriage of various neutral tones and textures creates a cohesive and enticing kitchen.

Ample amounts of storage were designed at lower heights to accommodate this petite family while colorful vases inserted behind glass doors were showcased at higher, less used ceiling heights. This combination married functionality with beauty seamlessly.

This outdated Mid Century ranch built in late 1950’s was in serious need of an update. Our clients wanted a fresh contemporary feel that was simple in design and reflected the original Mid Century feel of the home. The new frosted Plexiglas railing allows the now open staircase and modern pendant to become part of the small dining area. White painted cabinetry with slab doors and minimal pulls add a lighter component and balance out the dark walnut cabinetry. The (3) built-in charging drawers, Legrand retractable outlets and a single door hood that opens with a light touch add a "cool" functional vibe to the space., Gray quartz countertops and a rectilinear white tile backsplash add serenity and tie in the stainless appliances giving the kitchen a modern feel. A wood waterfall countertop detail on the back of the island adds interest to the space and is anchored by the unique handblown wave glass pendants in a soft grey color. The Oak Street renovation has completely transformed the 70’s era split level home into a sophisticated modern oasis! By extending the kitchen into the existing dining room space, we’re able to maximize functionality and flow between the kitchen and new dining room area. By opening up the wall to create a large pass-through between kitchen and dining, we’ve created the perfect solution to visibly combine all areas and make an ideal design solution for entertaining while providing plenty of seating around the peninsula. High vaulted ceilings exaggerate the ceiling height and work beautifully with the tall cabinetry which brings the down the human scale of vertical space. Slick black Cambria Black quartz countertops and dark metal finishes provide high contrast against the white cabinets and create a high end look. A warm gray stained oak hardwood flooring adds warmth to the space keeping the overall look light and soft. It’s easy to see why this beautiful kitchen transformation has become the heart of the home with a new functional, modern design for the whole family.

A lower level patio allows a lot of flexibility because railing is not required. When an HOA limits a deck size, it can be challenging to come up with a creative design. We fabricated custom benches and flowerboxes to add function and beauty while staying within the confines of the space allowed. Our thanks to D & L Photography for the wonderful pictures.

This 1902 San Antonio home was beautiful both inside and out, except for the kitchen, which was dark and dated. The original kitchen layout consisted of a breakfast room and a small kitchen separated by a wall. There was also a very small screened in porch off of the kitchen. The homeowners dreamed of a light and bright new kitchen and that would accommodate a 48" gas range, built in refrigerator, an island and a walk in pantry. At first, it seemed almost impossible, but with a little imagination, we were able to give them every item on their wish list. We took down the wall separating the breakfast and kitchen areas, recessed the new Subzero refrigerator under the stairs, and turned the tiny screened porch into a walk in pantry with a gorgeous blue and white tile floor. The french doors in the breakfast area were replaced with a single transom door to mirror the door to the pantry. The new transoms make quite a statement on either side of the 48" Wolf range set against a marble tile wall. A lovely banquette area was created where the old breakfast table once was and is now graced by a lovely beaded chandelier. Pillows in shades of blue and white and a custom walnut table complete the cozy nook. The soapstone island with a walnut butcher block seating area adds warmth and character to the space. The navy barstools with chrome nailhead trim echo the design of the transoms and repeat the navy and chrome detailing on the custom range hood. A 42" Shaws farmhouse sink completes the kitchen work triangle. Off of the kitchen, the small hallway to the dining room got a facelift, as well. We added a decorative china cabinet and mirrored doors to the homeowner's storage closet to provide light and character to the passageway. After the project was completed, the homeowners told us that "this kitchen was the one that our historic house was always meant to have." There is no greater reward for what we do than that.

This kitchen is very unique with the bold black backsplash that contrasts really well with the wooden cabinetry and white counter tops. The island is large enough to prep meals and also sit down to enjoy. Photos by VLG Photography
