I love seeing a house go up from the blueprints to the end of the build. It is always a journey filled with a thousand decisions, some creative on-the-spot thinking and yes, usually a few stressful moments. This Naperville project was a collaboration with a local builder and architect. The Kitchen Studio collaborated by completing the cabinetry design and final layout for the entire home. The kitchen is spacious and opens into the neighboring family room. A 48” Thermador range is centered between two windows, and the sink has a view through a window into the mudroom which is a unique feature. A large island with seating and waterfall countertops creates a beautiful focal point for the room. A bank of refrigeration, including a full-size wine refrigerator completes the picture. The area between the kitchen and dining room houses a second sink and a large walk in pantry. The kitchen features many unique storage elements important to the new homeowners including in-drawer charging stations, a cutlery divider, knife block, microwave drawer, pull out trash, multiple appliance garages, spice pull outs and tray dividers. There’s not much you can’t store in this room! Cabinetry is white shaker inset styling with a gray stain on the island. The back of the island features lap style siding that coordinates with the fireplace in the neighboring family room. Mid-century inspired lighting gives the room a modern vibe. By completely gutting the old kitchen, we were able to start with a clean slate and to integrate the homeowner’s list of requirements. Both love to entertain, so this included two refrigerators, a full pantry, an island, a large-capacity 48-inch Viking range and two dishwashers.

This white-on-white kitchen design has a transitional style and incorporates beautiful clean lines. It features a Personal Paint Match finish on the Kitchen Island matched to Sherwin-Williams "Threshold Taupe" SW7501 and a mix of light tan paint and vibrant orange décor. These colors really pop out on the “white canvas” of this design. The designer chose a beautiful combination of white Dura Supreme cabinetry (in "Classic White" paint), white subway tile backsplash, white countertops, white trim, and a white sink. The built-in breakfast nook (L-shaped banquette bench seating) attached to the kitchen island was the perfect choice to give this kitchen seating for entertaining and a kitchen island that will still have free counter space while the homeowner entertains. A PLACE TO GATHER Location: Eagan, MN, USA This family of five wanted an inviting space to gather with family and friends. Mom, the primary cook, wanted a large island with more organized storage – everything in its place – and a crisp white kitchen with the character of an older home. Challenges: Design an island that could accommodate this family of five for casual weeknight dinners. Create more usable storage within the existing kitchen footprint. Design a better transition between the upper cabinets on the 8-foot sink wall and the adjoining 9-foot cooktop wall. Make room for more counter space around the cooktop. It was poorly lit, cluttered with small appliances and confined by the tall oven cabinet. Solutions: A large island, that seats 5 comfortably, replaced the small island and kitchen table. This allowed for more storage including cookbook shelves, a heavy-duty roll out shelf for the mixer, a 2-bin recycling center and a bread drawer. Tall pantries with decorative grilles were placed between the kitchen and family room. These created ample storage and helped define each room, making each one feel larger, yet more intimate. A space intentionally separates the upper cabinets on the sink wall from those on the cooktop wall. This created symmetry on the sink wall and made room for an appliance garage, which keeps the countertops uncluttered. Moving the double ovens to the former pantry location made way for more usable counter space around the cooktop and a dramatic focal point with the hood, cabinets and marble backsplash. Special Features: Custom designed corbels and island legs lend character. Gilt open lanterns, antiqued nickel grilles on the pantries, and the soft linen shade at the kitchen sink add personality and charm. The unique bronze hardware with a living finish creates the patina of an older home. A walnut island countertop adds the warmth and feel of a kitchen table. This homeowner truly understood the idea of living with the patina of marble. Her grandmother’s marble-topped antique table inspired the Carrara countertops. Location: Bethesda, MD, USA We completely revamped the kitchen and breakfast areas and gave these spaces more natural light. They wanted a place that is both aesthetic and practical and we achieved this by having space for sitting in the breakfast space and the peninsulas on both sides of the kitchen, not to mention there is extra sitting space along the bay window with extra storage. A newly designed kitchen for a large extended family where food preparation and serving/sharing could be accomplished. A buffet was designed and built in to the space to separate the kitchen from the eating area with a custom table to accommodate seating for 14. The gathering place needed to have the look of driftwood which was accomplished with a translucent white paint on cherry that allowed the grain patterns of the wood to peak through. The "sand through" technique further enhanced the look of driftwood. The style is classic with small rails on the top and larger rails below with a flat center panel. Simple hardware completes the look. Special soapstone was found that reflected the ocean with deep green and blue areas that swirl like water. Small mosaic tile were mixed with mother of pearl. Pendant light reflected by nautical lanterns complete the scene.
