A friend living here in Altadena, asked me to help her with her kitchen remodel. She had hired a design/build firm that was not listening to her. I helped her with a floor plan of the kitchen, removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room and expanding the space for more storage and a large island. Then we selected the material finishes. Here is the final result. Unfortunately, the builder did not follow our request to have the island cabinet in gray with a white quartz top. But it achieved our goal of more storage and a functional space for her to cook and bake. She loves it.JRY & Co.

This Jersey City, NJ space was the first permanent ‘home’ for the yoga studio, so it was essential for us to listen well and design a space to serve their needs for years to come. Through our design process, we helped to guide the owners through the fit-out of their new studio location that required minimal demolition and disruption to the existing space. Together, we converted a space originally used as a preschool into a welcoming, spacious yoga studio for local yogis. We created one main yoga studio by combining four small classrooms into a single larger space with new walls, while all the other program spaces (including designated areas for holistic treatments, massage, and bodywork) were accommodated into pre-existing rooms. Our team completed all demo, sheetrock, electrical, and painting aspects of the project. (The studio owners did some of the work themselves, and a different company installed the flooring and carpets.) We designed this flex space with glass doors to keep the open concept feel to the downstairs. This particular room would be a place for working at times but also a space for them to relax and listen to records in the quaint sitting area. It turned out spectacular!

A tea pot, being a vessel, is defined by the space it contains, it is not the tea pot that is important, but the space. Crispin Sartwell Located on a lake outside of Milwaukee, the Vessel House is the culmination of an intense 5 year collaboration with our client and multiple local craftsmen focused on the creation of a modern analogue to the Usonian Home. As with most residential work, this home is a direct reflection of it’s owner, a highly educated art collector with a passion for music, fine furniture, and architecture. His interest in authenticity drove the material selections such as masonry, copper, and white oak, as well as the need for traditional methods of construction. The initial diagram of the house involved a collection of embedded walls that emerge from the site and create spaces between them, which are covered with a series of floating rooves. The windows provide natural light on three sides of the house as a band of clerestories, transforming to a floor to ceiling ribbon of glass on the lakeside. The Vessel House functions as a gallery for the owner’s art, motorcycles, Tiffany lamps, and vintage musical instruments – offering spaces to exhibit, store, and listen. These gallery nodes overlap with the typical house program of kitchen, dining, living, and bedroom, creating dynamic zones of transition and rooms that serve dual purposes allowing guests to relax in a museum setting. Through it’s materiality, connection to nature, and open planning, the Vessel House continues many of the Usonian principles Wright advocated for. A custom sofa table, designed by Lauren Pennisi, allied ASID makes the awkwardly shaped room sing! Vaulted ceilings called out for shiplap siding and we listened!

This stunning in-stone TV installation overcame the floor plan which offered to no way to have at TV without sticking out like a sore thumb. Hence, the clients have never had a TV until now. The new LG display was installed within the stone with only 1/2" on each side. To provide a compelling listening experience, 4 in-ceiling speakers were deployed along with a nearly invisible in-wall subwoofer. All components are located in the garage one floor below and are controlled by a radio frequency remote control. RF remotes penetrate all manner of solid services including walls, doors, and floors.
