Inspiration for a contemporary medium tone wood floor entry hall remodel in New York

After having spent several years living in a trailer getting to know their rural property in La Pine Oregon, our clients made the decision to build a small off-the-grid modern cabin that they can retire in and use as a hub for entertaining family and friends. Keeping the cabin modest in scale and construction cost was critical to this couple since they planned to build the cabin themselves and didn’t want to overextend themselves financially so they can continue pursuing their love for international travel and maximize time spent with their loved ones. Set amongst a grove of lodge pole pines, the cabin was designed with simplicity in mind and utilizes materials that help it fit in seamlessly with the surrounding high desert environment while being low maintenance and fire resistant. Although the cabin is compact in footprint, the interior spaces are all designed to open out onto a large outdoor deck, effectively doubling the usable living space, while a covered breezeway provides protected access to the main entry and houses an outdoor kitchen for entertaining in warmer weather and wood storage for use in the indoor/ outdoor fireplace during the winter months. The compact 600 square foot interior footprint also has a 200 square foot flexible loft space which can be used to work from and house guests alike. The exterior breezeway, main living space and loft was designed to be open to the vaulted wood rafters, steel collar ties and skylights above, creating a seamless transition between the interior and exterior and a sense of openness and lightness unusual for such a compact footprint.

The renovated open, contemporary loft dining room of a previously commercial to residential conversion from the 1970s. Although the project required a complete layout change, the client wanted a clean modern open loft space. What did we keep? We refinished the original maple floors but bleached them to an elegant, light hue, and the open dining room and living area literally show off the great bones of the space - a structural column and grid of ceiling beams add visual interest and ceiling height while celebrating the building's industrial roots.

This one story home was transformed into a mid-century modern masterpiece with the addition of a second floor. Its expansive wrap around deck showcases the view of White Rock Lake and the Dallas Skyline and giving this growing family the space it needed to stay in their beloved home. We renovated the downstairs with modifications to the kitchen, pantry, and laundry space, we added a home office and upstairs, a large loft space is flanked by a powder room, playroom, 2 bedrooms and a jack and jill bath. Marrying their love for the mountains with their new city lifestyle, this downtown condo went from a choppy 90’s floor plan to an open and inviting mountain loft. New hardwood floors were laid throughout and plaster walls were featured to give this loft a more inviting and warm atmosphere. The floor plan was reimagined, giving the clients a full formal entry with storage, while letting the rest of the space remain open for entertaining. Custom white oak cabinetry was designed, which also features handmade hardware and a handmade ceramic backsplash.

This NoHo apartment, in a landmarked circa 1870 building designed by Stephen Decatur Hatch and converted to lofts in 1987, had been interestingly renovated by a rock musician before being purchased by a young hedge fund manager and his gallery director girlfriend. Naturally, the couple brought to the project their collection of painting, photography and sculpture, mostly by young emerging artists. Axis Mundi accommodated these pieces within a neutral palette accented with occasional flashes of bright color that referenced the various artworks. Major furniture pieces – a sectional in the library, a 12-foot-long dining table–along with a rich blend of textures such as leather, linen, fur and warm woods, helped bring the sprawling dimensions of the loft down to human scale. Loft apartments have always been popular and they seem to require a particular type of styled kitchen. This loft space has embraced the industrial feel with original tin exposed ceilings. The polish of the granite wall and the sleek matching granite countertops provide a welcome contrast in this industrial modern kitchen. Adding the elements of natural wood drawers inside the island is just one of the distinguished statement pieces inside the historic building apartment loft space.

The mix of materials from the the neutral shiplap to the galvanized metal lining the ceiling of the loft space combine for visual interest that is rustic and homey while also being very current.

The addition of a bas-relief drywall element climbing the main wall of the two-story space and turning into a ceiling feature that sponsors recessed, pendant and cove LED lighting, adds a dramatic feature to the loft space. A wall mounted TV is nestled in the large niche across the sofa. Modern furniture, a concrete Cha-Cha table on wheels and the iconic Egg chair in white leather complete the mod feel of the space. Provide an inviting area to work and consult with clients during the day while also serving as a functional kitchen, bathroom, living and sleeping space for my client that downsized from a townhouse. It was a tall order, but we worked closely to ensure the space functioned well in both capacities. The result is a travel inspired, eclectic, yet modern space that reflects my client's personality and style. It was a multi phased project given all the kitchen & bath renovations required. The previous kitchen had been removed entirely so we started from scratch and we're extremely proud of the result. ​ Favourite pieces include the subtle iridescent backsplash, the moroccan lighting, the sliding glass shower enclosure, the imported media unit made from fishing boats, the hanging bike and my clients travel photographer that add colour and his personality to the space.
