Inspiration for a craftsman kitchen remodel in Atlanta

This over 100 year old home has some great features that the homeowner wanted to keep and improve on to keep the feel of the 1899 home, but still modernize it to today's comforts. A 600 square foot addition was added to the back of the home, enlarging the kitchen and master suite. Engineered hardwood floors were added throughout the home, distressed and custom colored stained beams were added to this period home. The stairs were completely redone with wood and white painted accents. Upstairs has 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, and an open study. The soft patterned carpet is throughout the upper level and compliments the neutral tones in the home. A metal chandelier hangs over the stairs to add more light.

Needing more space for their growing family, these young homeowners approached us to help them create an updated, larger home from their existing 1953 split-level. On the first floor, walls were removed to create an open concept kitchen and living room. A new dining room addition was constructed in the back, as well as a new tandem 2-car garage.

This timber column porch replaced a small portico. It features a 7.5' x 24' premium quality pressure treated porch floor. Porch beam wraps, fascia, trim are all cedar. A shed-style, standing seam metal roof is featured in a burnished slate color. The porch also includes a ceiling fan and recessed lighting.

Kitchen Deck Upper level deck off of the kitchen has easy access to the back yard. Cable railing allows for maximum visual access from each direction. Below the deck access is available to a large storage area below the house. Rear Additions The rear of the house was extended roughly 16 feet toward the back property line at the kitchen and even more at the master suite--and thus greatly enlarged the home's square footage. All of this was done, however, with attention to maintaining the scale of the house relative to its original design, to the site and to its neighborhood context. The porches, deck, stair access points and openings at the rear of the house tie the house and back yard together in a strong way, as was hoped for by the homeowners. This brownstone, located in Harlem, consists of five stories which had been duplexed to create a two story rental unit and a 3 story home for the owners. The owner hired us to do a modern renovation of their home and rear garden. The garden was under utilized, barely visible from the interior and could only be accessed via a small steel stair at the rear of the second floor. We enlarged the owner’s home to include the rear third of the floor below which had walk out access to the garden. The additional square footage became a new family room connected to the living room and kitchen on the floor above via a double height space and a new sculptural stair. The rear facade was completely restructured to allow us to install a wall to wall two story window and door system within the new double height space creating a connection not only between the two floors but with the outside. The garden itself was terraced into two levels, the bottom level of which is directly accessed from the new family room space, the upper level accessed via a few stone clad steps. The upper level of the garden features a playful interplay of stone pavers with wood decking adjacent to a large seating area and a new planting bed. Wet bar cabinetry at the family room level is mirrored by an outside cabinetry/grill configuration as another way to visually tie inside to out. The second floor features the dining room, kitchen and living room in a large open space. Wall to wall builtins from the front to the rear transition from storage to dining display to kitchen; ending at an open shelf display with a fireplace feature in the base. The third floor serves as the children’s floor with two bedrooms and two ensuite baths. The fourth floor is a master suite with a large bedroom and a large bathroom bridged by a walnut clad hall that conceals a closet system and features a built in desk. The master bath consists of a tiled partition wall dividing the space to create a large walkthrough shower for two on one side and showcasing a free standing tub on the other. The house is full of custom modern details such as the recessed, lit handrail at the house’s main stair, floor to ceiling glass partitions separating the halls from the stairs and a whimsical builtin bench in the entry.

The ranch-style home required significant modifications to make room for two generations of adults living in one household. The second story addition was added containing a master bedroom suite, craft room, study, laundry and bathroom. Furthermore, the existing first floor was redesigned and renovated with the focus on creating a “no-step” main level for an aging parent with mobility concerns. A new great room was constructed which affords the homeowners a comfortable place to relax or entertain larger family gatherings. Careful consideration was given to the design of the exterior of the home as well. It was important that the second floor addition blend with the original home creating a unified façade.
