This Project was loads of fun and challenging... the clients allow me to use creative concepts to cosmetically hide obstacles such as heat trunks, jogged foundation walls and steel columns. The large solid maple serving wet bar was hand crafted and lounge fireplace wall where off set with one another. We wanted them to look and feel to be adjoining space yet still define the game table and media space to be its own. Although it was all one large open space, we tied the entire space together by the ceiling work and boxed a steel post to mimic the finishes of the wet bar. **Project Overview** This new construction home built next to a serene lake features a gorgeous, large-scale kitchen that also connects to a bar, home office, breakfast room and great room. The homeowners sought the warmth of traditional styling, updated for today. In addition, they wanted to incorporate unexpected touches that would add personality. Strategic use of furniture details combined with clean lines brings the traditional style forward, making the kitchen feel fresh, new and timeless. **What Makes This Project Unique?* Three finishes, including vintage white paint, stained cherry and textured painted gray oak cabinetry, work together beautifully to create a varied, unique space. Above the wall cabinets, glass cabinets with X mullions add interest and decorative storage. Single ovens are tucked in cabinets under a window, and a warming drawer under one perfectly matches the cabinet drawer under the other. Matching furniture-style armoires flank the wall ovens, housing the freezer and a pantry in one and custom designed large scale appliance garage with retractable doors in the other. Other furniture touches can be found on the sink cabinet and range top cabinet that help complete the look. The variety of colors and textures of the stained and painted cabinetry, custom dark finish copper hood, wood ceiling beams, glass cabinets, wood floors and sleek backsplash bring the whole look together. **Design Challenges* Even though the space is large, we were challenged by having to work around the two doorways, two windows and many traffic patterns that run through the kitchen. Wall space for large appliances was quickly in short supply. Because we were involved early in the project, we were able to work with the architect to expanded the kitchen footprint in order to make the layout work and get appliance placement just right. We had other architectural elements to work with that we wanted to compliment the kitchen design but also dictated what we could do with the cabinetry. The wall cabinet height was determined based on the beams in the space. The oven wall with furniture armoires was designed around the window with the lake view. The height of the oven cabinets was determined by the window. We were able to use these obstacles and challenges to design creatively and make this kitchen one of a kind. Photo by MIke Kaskel

A young professional purchased a 40th floor condo with a stunning view of the lake shore. The tiny galley kitchen was dated and poorly designed. Limited counter space and few cabinets, made this a difficult and uncomfortable place to cook and entertain. The age and the construction of the building made redesign very challenging. With patience and determination, we overcame each obstacle and created the perfect space for this client’s needs and lifestyle. The new kitchen is open to the living space and shares its spectacular views. A large island dramatically expanded the cooking area, houses several appliances, adds lots of storage, and serves as the main eating area. The newly designed kitchen is the center piece of this lovely condo.

This is a long narrow closet, with good height on the right side. His and hers closet with a sloping ceiling. She wanted it to be rich in color and with decorative details, as well as cabinets above to really maximize the space

This project entailed updating a finished basement and boys' playroom that was underutilized and contained many design obstacles from lolly columns to mechanical equipment. The client wanted the space to blend with the eclectic old style of the rest of her home, and also wanted to incorporate a couple of existing custom millwork pieces. With three boys, all with varying interests from art to toy collections, the client needed this space to cater to their hobbies. We were honoured to have the pleasure of working with Historic Restoration Inc., to fully restore the Loblaws Groceterias Warehouse & Head Office at 500 Lakeshore St W (originally erected around 1928). Each brick and stone was carefully disassembled, cleaned and stored. The building was fully rebuilt to its original state. It was a challenging task with many obstacles and great learning experiences. We are proud to have been a part of this unique restoration project!

At the heart of this oasis lies the existing tree, not merely an obstacle but the focal point, the star around which the entire design revolves. Built specifically to accommodate its presence, the cabinetry forms a sculptural embrace, wrapping around the base like a protective shroud. This mid-town Toronto couple with university-aged children decided to transform their backyard into an adult leisure retreat. Their dream was centred around a pool, but there were some obstacles. First was a tree protection zone, second the limit on lot coverage and third the sloping yard—time to call in the Betz design team.

Get an up-close view of the gas range. A stainless steel hood is backed by a linear mini tile mosaic pattern. The tile contains a range of colors found in the Delicatus granite pattern. This project was a commercial law office that needed staircases to service the two floors. We designed these stairs with a lot of influence from the client as they liked the industrial look with exposed steel. We stuck with a minimalistic design which included grip tread at the top and a solid looking balustrade. One of the staircases is U-shaped, two of the stairs are L-shaped and one is a straight staircase. One of the biggest obstacles was accessing the space, so we had to roll everything around on flat ground and lift up with a spider crane. This meant we worked closely alongside the builders onsite to tackle any hurdles.
