Durable quartz counters are an attractive addition but do not overwhelm the contemporary look with the stainless Steel appliances. It also helps to showcase the splash of color added by the homeowner.

Designed by Mark Sleith of Reico Kitchen & Bath in Falls Church, VA in collaboration with Mike Parkinson, this eclectic style kitchen remodel features Green Forest Cabinetry in the Park Place door style in two finishes. The base cabinets all features the Norfolk Blue finish and the wall cabinet features a White finish. Kitchen countertops are engineered quartz by Q from MSI in the color Calacatta Trento. The tile backsplash behind the range features Artistic Tile with Blue Note Circles as well as a pot filler faucet. Said the client, "We are obsessed with our uber-chic new kitchen! Mark was a consummate professional throughout the entire process. I described my ideal space, and he designed something even better that I could have imagined. Not only did he help me create a luxe look within the confines of my budget, he stuck with me throughout every step of the project. Mark went above and beyond to create a design that captured my vision." Added Mark, "The client was amazing to work with, and had definite ideas of what she liked and did not like. The use of white in the kitchen is a great way to keep the room feeling bright and open, even in a small space. But let’s face it, too much white can be overwhelming. With this modern timeless kitchen design, we made use of Iceberg white Melawood cabinets and contracting Pro Quartz Ebony counter tops, dark grey walls with a mixture of textured grey wall tiles.

Kitchen wallpaper installation – Tucson, AZ. Inspired by Asian prints, this Tucson kitchen project features botanical wallpaper in rich indigo with delicate silver leaf accents. Applied between dark cabinetry and light quartz countertops, the wallpaper adds elegance without overwhelming the space. Washable and heat-resistant, it performs well in cooking zones.

The new low maintenance foundation plantings surrounding this charming house are dwarf so as to not overwhelm the beautiful front porch. Flowering shrubs, perennials, bulbs and groundcovers provide season interest spring thru fall.

This staircase earns its setting: stately newels ground the design with presence, while a brass handrail introduces warmth without overwhelming. White oak treads bring the outdoors in, their natural grain playing quietly against crisp white paneling. Above it all, a grand lantern fixture suspends from the ceiling, casting the kind of glow that makes a space feel inhabited rather than staged. That light serves double duty here. The stairwell walls double as a gallery, a curated collection of historic equestrian paintings that feel entirely at home in this Virginia mountain retreat. We loved updating this 1977 house giving our clients a more transitional kitchen, living room and powder bath. Our clients are very busy and didn’t want too many options. Our designers narrowed down their selections and gave them just enough options to choose from without being overwhelming. In the kitchen, we replaced the cabinetry without changing the locations of the walls, doors openings or windows. All finished were replaced with beautiful cabinets, counter tops, sink, back splash and faucet hardware. In the Master bathroom, we added all new finishes. There are two closets in the bathroom that did not change but everything else did. We.added pocket doors to the bedroom, where there were no doors before. Our clients wanted taller 36” height cabinets and a seated makeup vanity, so we were able to accommodate those requests without any problems. We added new lighting, mirrors, counter top and all new plumbing fixtures in addition to removing the soffits over the vanities and the shower, really opening up the space and giving it a new modern look. They had also been living with the cold and hot water reversed in the shower, so we also fixed that for them! In their living room, they wanted to update the dark paneling, remove the large stone from the curved fireplace wall and they wanted a new mantel. We flattened the wall, added a TV niche above fireplace and moved the cable connections, so they have exactly what they wanted. We left the wood paneling on the walls but painted them a light color to brighten up the room. There was a small wet bar between the living room and their family room. They liked the bar area but didn’t feel that they needed the sink, so we removed and capped the water lines and gave the bar an updated look by adding new counter tops and shelving. They had some previous water damage to their floors, so the wood flooring was replaced throughout the den and all connecting areas, making the transition from one room to the other completely seamless. In the end, the clients love their new space and are able to really enjoy their updated home and now plan stay there for a little longer! The king-size bed takes center stage, inviting relaxation with its plush white linens. Sunlight streams through the two windows flanking the headboard, casting a warm glow on the creamy fabric upholstery. Perhaps the headboard features a subtle button-tufting design, adding a touch of texture. The nightstand, crafted from the same light brown wood as the headboard, offers a sturdy companion to the bed. Imagine a worn leather-bound book peeking out from one of the drawers, hinting at the occupant's interests. The soft greige walls provide a calming backdrop, while the cream rug brings a touch of warmth underfoot. The overall aesthetic leans towards a classic and serene feel. The nickel pulls on the nightstand drawers add a touch of modern detail without overwhelming the classic shaker style furniture. Perhaps a delicate floral arrangement graces the nightstand, adding a pop of color.

Metal and wood are often treated as opposites, but this staircase makes the case for partnership. White oak treads, chamfer-top newels, and a coordinating handrail bring the warmth and texture that only natural wood can offer. Against that, a satin black horizontal bar balustrade introduces rigid geometric precision, its clean lines and matte finish defining the oak rather than competing with it. BEFORE: This new build was boring and left the homeowner uninspired. The task of choosing paint for every single room was overwhelming for her. We stepped in and made color selection, statement lighting, and a beautiful bold accent wall that she absolutely loves.

Our clients knew they wanted to live in Wicker Park, within walking distance of everything the neighborhood has to offer. They found an 1890s cottage-style home on a great street and fell in love with its charm. Unfortunately, the house had fallen into a state of serious neglect and needed significant work. Excited, but also a bit overwhelmed, our clients came to us for help with a gut renovation. We were able to guide them through the entire process from the start of demo through placement of the final decorative object. The process was fun and rewarding and, upon completion, our clients were left with a tailored and sophisticated home that is just as stylish as they are.

Just look at this DESIGNfirst original Bathroom remodel. The richness of the Custom Cabinets in a sharp blue finish pop against the detailed Tile Wall and brass fixtures. A custom shower with beautiful contrasting tile elements help to entice the user's eyes to dance about the space. With very tall ceilings, the darker paint helps to bring it settle a bit and not feel so overwhelming! What would an amazing remodel like this be without the client's very own Sauna!?

This visually simple, modern solution is unique within its suburban context, and gives this family the custom landscape of their dreams. The homeowners’ wish list included a modern design and clearly defined spaces: a larger dining patio, firepit patio, hot tub, and a 4-season sport court (which gets flooded for ice hockey in the winter). Circulation and screening were key in Ground One’s landscape design. A sport court could overwhelm the entire backyard, so it was raised three feet above the primary backyard to physically separate different spaces, and minimize its visual impact. Rectangular bluestone in a running bond pattern was used in all the gathering spaces (dining, firepit, hot tub). Bluestone walls reinforce a simple material palette. A larger dining patio was installed near the house for greater entertaining flexibility. Plank paver paths connect to a private hot tub area and allow kids to don hockey gear and enter the sport court without messing up the house. The firepit patio is at the back of the property, nestled into the existing hillside under a large oak and below the sport court terrace. Plantings reinforce the geometry of each gathering space, provide focal points, and create layers of screening and separation from any given vantage point. Hardy species were selected for their low-maintenance requirements and various seasons of interest. Landscape lighting was incorporated to provide way finding between the patios, accent various hardscape elements, and highlight the trees.
