Located on the flat of Beacon Hill, this iconic building is rich in history and in detail. Constructed in 1828 as one of the first buildings in a series of row houses, it was in need of a major renovation to improve functionality and to restore as well as re-introduce charm.Originally designed by noted architect Asher Benjamin, the renovation was respectful of his early work. “What would Asher have done?” was a common refrain during design decision making, given today’s technology and tools.

Exterior and interior walls showcase ornamental salvaged wood sourced from Appalachian Antique Hardwoods in Waynesville. “It takes a long time to make matching dovetail cuts, especially in such hard wood,” notes Reed. “[The carpenters] used a variety of tools, from chainsaws to chisels, circular saws, belt sanders, even files.”

Quartz counter tops along the perimeter cabinets are a durable solution to keeping a work space clean and easy on the maintenance. The pot filler is another tool to making cooking big meals easier.

This 4-acre site hosts three new structures, which include a large workshop, main residence and an independent art studio. Situated within a beautiful wooded environment, the edge of the site abuts a peaceful pond, which brought inspiration to the material and stylistic choices of the structures. The two-story barn is home to a complete workshop, equipped with the necessary machinery and a hearty wood storage space on the upper level. The timber frame structure was clad with stained shingles on the exterior and left with a light natural stain on the interior wood, bringing a light, warm atmosphere to the entire space.

The richness of walnut. This is a sleek sophisticated over lay door style. The small yet beautiful angled applied molding is stunning. Quartz countertops. Nice accents with glass doors on cabinets that come down to the countertop. Two islands for your best function. Designed by Anne Dempsey for DDK Kichen Design Group. Cabinets by Dutch Made Cabinetry. Photographs by Mike Kaskel.

This kitchen was designed to integrated the kitchen as a part of a formal great room. Our mill work factory fabricated furniture grade wainscoting. This wainscoting on the bar eliminated wear and tear from the bar stools and makes the outside of the kitchen blend with furnishings. This luxury kitchen is seamless with the greatroom yet has the function for all cooking.,

This kitchen was in need of a major overhaul. Before we got our hands on it, it screamed 1980s (and not in a great way).
The understated bronze metallic strips in the tile were the inspiration for this stunning kitchen. From that came the color palette and granite selections. Those, combined with the first-class appliance selections, make this a cook's dream. From Thermador's newest gas range (complete with steamer oven) to SubZero refrigeration and freezer units, this design does not disappoint. It's the perfect stage for any chef to perform his/her magic!

DESIGN + INNOVATION: Award of Excellence
PROJECT: RE_FAB Mobile Fabrication Lab
CLIENT: Ford College Community Challenge and Project RE_
ARCHITECTURE FIRM: Urban Design Build Studio
CONTRACTORS: Urban Design Build Studio
PHOTOGRAPHER: Urban Design Build Studio
DESCRIPTION: RE_FAB is a mobile fabrication lab that functions as an educational and digital fabrication tool with the capacity to serve schools, facilities, and communities. The project is designed to exploit and celebrate the potentials of the tools that it houses, and will house (full size CNC router, laser cutter, vacuum former, digital spatial scanner, and a 3D printer) and was funded by grants from two corporations interested in architecture community outreach projects.
JURY COMMENTS: This is a project that every jury member unanimously loved. Every aspect of its problem-solving design seemed smart and responsive, and it is those responses that resulted in a design that is both innovative and legible to what its function is intended to serve. Why is there not one of these in my neighborhood?

Will Calhoun - This was a wire mesh lined 'black hole' under the stairs where various brooms, vacuums and a few other things were tucked. Now it's a bright, organized matte urethane treated plywood closet where cleaning items are easily accessed.
