This young family of four came in right after closing on their house and with a new baby on the way. Our goal was to complete the project prior to baby’s arrival so this project went on the expedite track. The beautiful 1920’s era brick home sits on a hill in a very picturesque neighborhood, so we were eager to give it the kitchen it deserves. The clients’ dream kitchen included pro-style appliances, a large island with seating for five and a kitchen that feels appropriate to the home’s era but that also is fresh and modern. They explicitly stated they did not want a “cookie cutter” design, so we took that to heart.
The key challenge was to fit in all of the items on their wish given the room’s constraints. We eliminated an existing breakfast area and bay window and incorporated that area into the kitchen. The bay window was bricked in, and to compensate for the loss of seating, we widened the opening between the kitchen and formal dining room for more of an open concept plan.
The ceiling in the original kitchen is about a foot lower than the rest of the house, and once it was determined that it was to hide pipes and other mechanicals, we reframed a large tray over the island and left the rest of the ceiling as is. Clad in walnut planks, the tray provides an interesting feature and ties in with the custom walnut and plaster hood.
The space feels modern yet appropriate to its Tudor roots. The room boasts large family friendly appliances, including a beverage center and cooktop/double oven combination. Soft white inset cabinets paired with a slate gray island provide a gentle backdrop to the multi-toned island top, a color echoed in the backsplash tile. The handmade subway tile has a textured pattern at the cooktop, and large pendant lights add more than a bit of drama to the room.

Although there was a good amount of existing light, I added about 12 more lights to bring out every detail to this master bedroom. Yukon Construction

Malibu Tile is dominant in this luxury home overlooking the Ojai Valley. Exposed beam ceilings of old scraped wood, trusses with planked ceilings and wrought iron stair cases with tiled risers. Arches are everywhere, from the master bath to the bedroom bed niches to the carved wood doors. Thick plaster walls with deep niches and thick window sills give a cool look to this old Spanish home in the warm, dry climate. Wrought iron lighting and limestone floors, along with gold leaf walls and murals. Project Location: Ojai, California. Project designed by Maraya Interior Design. Influenced by English Cotswold and French country architecture, this eclectic European lake home showcases a predominantly stone exterior paired with a cedar shingle roof. Interior features like wide-plank oak floors, plaster walls, custom iron windows in the kitchen and great room and a custom limestone fireplace create old world charm. An open floor plan and generous use of glass allow for views from nearly every space and create a connection to the gardens and abundant outdoor living space.

The cantilevered living room of this incredible mid century modern home still features the original wood wall paneling and brick floors. We were so fortunate to have these amazing original features to work with. Our design team brought in a new modern light fixture, MCM furnishings, lamps and accessories. We utilized the client's existing rug and pulled our room's inspiration colors from it. Bright citron yellow accents add a punch of color to the room. The surrounding built-in bookcases are also original to the room.

This was an extremely challenging and detail oriented project. We were contracted to completely change the layout of the homeowner's master suite. This is no small feat in a 100 year old house.
We moved the existing bathroom to a new location which allowed us to turn an auxiliary room into his closet and the old bathroom location into her closet.
Both his closet and the master shower vestibule received gorgeous plaster dome ceilings.
The master shower enclosure features fully custom starphire glass, a steam unit and marble slab and tile as far as the eye can see.
We used a honed Gioia Venatino tile in a herringbone pattern on the floor and for the wainscoting throughout.
The millwork in all closets and bathrooms is custom, done by CJS Millwork based in Norwalk, CT.
Another project managed by Alexander Vellios resulted in another happy client!
