This kitchen in Elgin came together in engineered quartz, Calacatta Viraldi, and it's the kind of stone that does a lot of the work in a room without shouting about it. The white background stays clean and bright, and the veining moves through it in soft grays and golds. For a kitchen that gets used every day, that's the whole point. Quartz is engineered stone, ground quartz mixed with resin under pressure, so it comes out of the plant with a consistent pattern from slab to slab. That consistency matters when you're templating a kitchen. We can match the veining across a seam or carry it around a corner without hunting for the right spot on the slab, because the pattern's already built in that way. Calacatta Viraldi reads soft and bright in a kitchen, which is exactly why it gets picked for spaces where people actually cook. Getting a countertop like this in is still a craft even with a manufactured material. We template the kitchen precisely, cut the slabs to fit the cabinets and the sink cutout, and dress the edges by hand. Here we kept the edge eased, a clean, simple detail that lets the stone itself stay the focus instead of the profile. Seams get set tight and leveled so your eye reads the counter as one continuous surface, not pieced-together sections. Day to day, this is a low-maintenance surface. Quartz doesn't need sealing, since the resin already closes it off from stains, and it resists scratches and everyday acids from cooking better than a lot of other surfaces. It handles the daily bumps of a real kitchen without much fuss. Heat's the one thing to watch, a hot pan straight off the stove can shock the resin, so a trivet's a smart habit, but that's a small price for a counter that otherwise shrugs off wine, coffee, and citrus without a second thought. It's a good look for Elgin and for the kind of Midlands kitchens we build these for, bright, durable, and built to actually get used instead of just looked at.

The clients approached us with the goal of enlarging the kitchen and dining area of their estate style home in the town of Weston, Massachusetts. It was critical that the space fit precisely into an existing corner of the home while tying into the stucco façade. The traditional style of the room was to include classic conservatory elements. We achieved the desired look by utilizing large windows with a clerestory unit above. We also added crown moldings to the interior which established the classic style and feel the client sought. The room was fully opened to the adjacent space, thereby enlarging the grand kitchen and allowing a flood of natural light to enter the beautiful dining area. Because the room was opened to the house (and effectively became part of the living area), we fully conditioned the space which allowed for a balance with the existing environment. The use of energy efficient windows and doors as well as high performance insulated glass added to the comfort. To transition from the interior to the exterior, we installed an outswing French door which allowed easy access to the lovely patio area just outside. The completed conservatory adds space, natural light, and a luxurious dining area to an already beautiful home.

They contacted Castle to help them with their basement planning and build for a finished laundry space and new bathroom with shower. Changes were first made to improve the health of the home. Asbestos tile flooring/glue was abated and the following items were added: a sump pump and drain tile, spray foam insulation, a glass block window, and a Panasonic bathroom fan. After the designer and client walked through ideas to improve flow of the space, we decided to eliminate the existing 1/2 bath in the family room and build the new 3/4 bathroom within the existing laundry room. This allowed the family room to be enlarged. Plumbing fixtures in the bathroom include a Kohler, Memoirs® Stately 24″ pedestal bathroom sink, Kohler, Archer® sink faucet and showerhead in polished chrome, and a Kohler, Highline® Comfort Height® toilet with Class Five® flush technology. This beautiful kitchen remodel was once a u-shape style kitchen but it was reconfigured and now has a peninsula. The cabinets featured are the Starmark maple wood with the Ridgeville style door and white finish. The Solid countertops have a waterfall edge complimented by the 3x6 bevel subway cotton glossy backsplash. The sink used in this remodel is a Blanco Precis Silgranit Super Single Bowl in metallic gray. The wet bar was also a feature added in this remodel. The business card of this facility will most likely be its hall. Towering walls, a panel of 600 TETRAPODS, and 5 huge KHMARA lamps, each floating under the ceiling and shining in its direction. Textured walls and stairs add softness to the space, making it real, natural, and not perfected beyond recognition. Handrails made of bent wood were a difficult task for craftsmen. But Ukrainian hands are capable of anything, that’s why the handrails in MURELI House are made precisely according to the wishes of the designers, and the angle of inclination of each wave is preserved.

From Mid-Century Classic to the Present An iconic design updated with comfort, function, and flow for today. A Remodel That Balances Past and Present What started as a desire to update a classic Eichler soon became an exploration of how Mid-Century Modern design can successfully evolve for today. The client, a tech professional with a passion for scuba diving and underwater photography, wanted a home that would both honor its original character and feel tailored to his daily life. A lifelong technology enthusiast, he still owns the very first Mac desktop he saved up for as a teenager working at Radio Shack, a detail that underscores his appreciation for design that melds function and form. Honoring Separation While Expanding Possibility Unlike many contemporary remodels where walls are opened up to create expansive living spaces, this project took a more restrained approach. The client valued the defined rooms of the original plan and wanted to preserve as much wall space as possible for displaying his large-format underwater photography. The emphasis was not on dramatic spatial reinvention, but on thoughtful refinements. Klopf Architecture shaped a gallery-like backdrop while also expanding the primary suite, modernizing materials and fixtures throughout the home, and improving the functionality and layout of the kitchen. The finished home feels at once timeless and renewed, an Eichler that continues to inspire while fully supporting the lifestyle of its present-day owner. A major turning point came mid-design. The original project brief had not included an addition, but as the reconfiguration of the primary bedroom and bath unfolded, it became clear that an expansion was the best approach to achieve the client’s vision of a more spacious suite. Fortunately, the adjustment came at a stage when revisions were still manageable and was integrated seamlessly, showing how thoughtful course corrections can strengthen a project rather than hinder it. Navigating Challenges With Precision The design development included multiple conceptual rounds, balancing preservation with subtle expansion. During construction, an existing post previously thought to be load-bearing turned out not to be. The structural engineer was able to pivot quickly, and both the post and the cross beam that had been intended to replace it could be omitted, allowing the original rhythm of the Eichler beam bays to be preserved. Sustainability was not just a checklist item, but a way to align the home with the client’s values of simplicity, efficiency, and long-term functionality. R-38 roof insulation reduced energy usage, solar panels with battery storage provided independence and resilience, and passive comfort strategies eliminated the need forenergy-intensive air conditioning. An electric vehicle charger and an on-demand hot water recirculation system (with call buttons as opposed to having constant circulation) add to the home’s long-term efficiency factors. Together, these moves created a home that is quieter, more comfortable, and better equipped for the future, qualities that supported the client’s pragmatic approach to design and living lightly. Details That Respect the Eichler DNA The remodel carries forward the Eichler’s original spirit while introducing new layers of modern livability. Originally, the house was approached along a deep, narrow walk, with the garage on one side and the house on the other, leaving the front door tucked far back within this chasm-like space. By pulling the entry forward, the design reshaped the arrival experience, creating a clearer threshold and a natural drop-off zone for bags, shoes, and keys. This shift also made room for a custom bench at the entry that extends seamlessly through the glass sidelight. The bench and drop-off zone now work together as a single, integrated sequence that supports everyday living while offering a tactile reminder of Eichler’s philosophy of connectedness. At the client’s request, Klopf reintroduced a classic Eichler gesture by extending the exterior siding into the entry and living room. The detail reinforces a sense of indoor/outdoor continuity while providing a subtle architectural surface that allows the client’s photography to take visual precedence. The signature concrete masonry wall at the front was reconstructed using blocks sourced to match the originals, now strengthened with rebar for seismic resilience while maintaining a private outdoor courtyard, visually extending the kitchen outward. A decorative trellis element, a detail borrowed from a neighboring Eichler, restores a familiar mid-century modern architectural motif. At the courtyard entry door, a custom etched glass sidelight with an ocean-themed design featuring kelp and jellyfish serves as a subtle homage to the client’s passion for deep-sea diving. Landscaping became an integral part of the overall transformation. The homeowner engaged landscape architect Randi Johnsen of Third Nature Studio to shape a series of calm, inviting outdoor rooms that read as a natural extension of the interiors. While technically outside of the core construction scope, the landscape design proved central to achieving a sense of completeness and connectedness across the property. Such whole-property considerations often emerge as design ideas take shape, underscoring the importance of flexibility in planning and budgeting, as well as close collaboration among the design team starting early in the process. The Value of Evolving Scope As with many custom residential projects, the scope evolved during the design process. What began as a targeted remodel grew to include a new/expanded primary suite, a rebuilt CMU patio wall for strength and longevity, and a solar panel array and battery storage for energy resilience and carbon-reduction. Each thoughtful decision represented a conscious investment in the home’s performance and character, rather than a cost overrun. The result was a project delivered on schedule, tailored precisely to the client’s lifestyle, and positioned to add long-term value both functionally and aesthetically. By embracing scope evolution as an opportunity rather than a challenge, and relying on good design paired with transparent communication, this remodel demonstrates how Eichler homes can be adapted for contemporary living without erasing their DNA. The client purchased a mature, small, NAPA Valley vineyard to be their home and for personal enjoyment. Once they began converting their new "hobby" grapes into wine, they soon realized they needed a place to "age" their labors and a place to then enjoy them. They decided to design such a place within the confines of their home where they could entertain family and friends. The structure was modified to allow storage of more than 200 individual bottles, cases, and magnum size bottles. A cask room was added as was a well-appointed tasting room. The storage area is separated from the tasting and social area by a tempered glass doors and windows. The space to be converted was a challenge. No surface was plumb or level, therefore, the remodel involved interior walls, new floors and ceilings. Until these issues were addressed, the beautiful cabinet work, and a complete temperature and humidity control system to store, maintain, and enjoy the wine could not be started. The floors had to be floated out and chases with faux finishes provided for HVAC and electrical. Lighting in the tasting room is provided by a series of recessed and puck lights. The bar/counter area is highlighted by a custom, Tiffany style chandelier. Enough space was left in front of the bar to accommodate two serving tables for food and snacks, with plenty of room to move about the space. Discreetly hidden behind the bar is a large capacity cooler that can chill several bottles at once. The bar is capped with eight lineal feet of Calcutta Gold Marble and sports a brass foot rail. The bar has grape panels between Acanthus Corbels and the bottle storage cabinet areas are a unique blend of Acanthus overlays under precisely cut and mitered grape design crown molding over and around a cleverly designed bottle storage system. Traffic flow is achieved through the multiple points of entry through any of three pairs of 6' custom double doors which, when weather permitting, can remain open while entertaining. The host and hostess can attend food and beverage service from behind and around the bar through a separate doorway. The temperature controlled cask storage area is large enough for the clients' current needs, and can accommodate a larger number of casks should the need arise. The floor and walls of the cask room are designed for easy maintenance.. Both rooms are delightfully decorated with earthen tone faux finishes on walls, ceilings and floors reminiscent of a nonspecific European wine making region. This effect is extended to the soffits in the tasting room. A unique wine racking system is easily stored, providing even greater ability to maintain and move about the storage area.

This extreme kitchen renovation involved removing many walls to create the open floorplan concept. The old laundry room was walled in approximately where the custom table sits now. A 12' custom patio door was added in place of a 6' window! Cabinetry was designed to precisely fit in this space using lots of drawer banks using no fillers. Shallow storage was built in to the right of the frig. and a 1200cfm hood vented through the roof was meticulously integrated above the slide in range. The laundry room is now hidden by a custom sliding barn door with soft close hardware. All this was done reusing the existing hardwood floors, patching in with new where required!
