In order to maximize both view and storage capacity, we chose to use a tall, deep cabinet to store plates and glassware. In order to have the same amount of storage in wall cabinets, the window would have been much smaller. As the view is of the homeowners pool, garden and the Hollywood Hills, we chose to prioritize the window and the storage, rather than obsess over the symmetry of the space. Photo by Lane Barden

Starting with a traditional shingled camp on the Slocum River, the Horseneck project transformed this compact vernacular building into a more modernist composition, connecting interior to exterior, overlapping programmatic areas, maximizing available daylight, and prioritizing outdoor living. With the river setting the backdrop, we began the design with an abstract composition of planes and volumes, which would serve to open the house, frame the views, and add depth to the landscape. The new glass wall, floating deck, cube-like pergola, and attenuated cedar planter all contribute to this geometric composition, in stark contrast to the lush wooded surroundings, and rolling hills. The extensive interior renovations included opening the central stair on both sides to serve as a central focal point for the interiors. For the son’s room, we again chose white TFL which is easy to clean. Since both Mom and Dad are tall, we expect that Junior will be as well in just a few years. Again, adjustable shelves mean that as he grows, the closet will grow with him. We prioritized hanging rods since Mom hangs most of his clothing when it comes out of the wash. No closet doors allows him to see all his options when getting dressed in the morning. A few shelves for folded items along with some drawers for underwear and socks gives him plenty of space for everything. And the tilt-out laundry bin makes laundry day a breeze.
