We designed the kitchen around several Sub-Zero/Wolf appliances, which were chosen for the client’s criteria to blend beauty, function and most importantly durability as this was a serious working kitchen. The refrigerators, freezers and tall wine tower were selected for the needed capacity for storage, organization and their ability to stand unadorned as a design element in the kitchen. The double wall oven, warming drawer, two microwaves and gas/grill cook top were chosen also for their durability and function as they cook for 10 people on a regular basis. While renovating their home located on a horse farm in Bedford, NY, it wasn’t surprising this husband and wife (who also is an equestrian) wanted their house to have a “barn feel”. To start, sourced reclaimed wood was used on the walls, floors and ceiling beams. This traditional kitchen, designed by Paulette Gambacorta, features Bilotta Collection cabinetry in a flush flat panel custom green paint with a glaze on maple. An added detail of a “crossbuck” end on the peninsula was custom made from reclaimed wood and inspired by the look of barn doors. Reclaimed wood shelves on iron brackets replaced upper cabinets for easy access. The marble countertops have a hand cut edge detail to resemble the look of when the stone was first quarried. An antique carpenter’s work bench was restored by the builder, for use as an island and extra work station. An apron front sink and a wains panel backsplash completed the barn look and feel. The updated living room needed to accommodate the existing desk for homework and the computer. The room had to seat six on a regular basis and be comfortable for lounging. Janet wanted to create a space that incorporated grey with pops of color. She decided on grey and yellow for the main upholstered pieces and added lots of color with the vibrant area rug. The surprise factor was adding the lime green ottoman and pulling that color in on the window treatments. The chairs flanking the fireplace swivel, which are highly functional for TV viewing or conversing with people seated on the sofa. Who wouldn’t love the curves of the accent chair? It adds interest to the room and is very comfortable.
