Our client came to us for help decorating her home at the tony building, One Eleven Wacker Drive. She wanted the space to reflect it's prime urban location and also her chic sense of style. Incorporating a couple of pieces that she brought with her, we were able to create a sophisticated, sexy space that draws the City of Chicago into the interior and, at the same time, provides a quiet respite from the hustle and bustle on the streets forty-two stories below.

Trail Top is nestled in a secluded, thickly-wooded neighborhood, and its wood and brick facade and low profile blend into the natural surroundings. The home was built as a private respite from the outside world, as evidenced by the solid wood, windowless doors that grace the entrance.

A young couple arrived in Lisbon amid the pandemic to start the next chapter of their life together. They were welcomed by a quieted city, with renewed appreciation for its own natural beauty, and happened upon a recently reconstructed apartment with a broad river view. All that remained was to select suitable furnishings to transform the spacious top-floor duplex into their own comfortable home. In the airy living area, a Poul Cadovius teak shelving system is the central display and entertainment center, drawing the eye toward the riverscape. The verticality is countered by sofa-chaise seating atop a Portugese-produced rug, plus a reclining armchair whose color takes cues from the plentiful plants. Playful, vintage lamps illuminate in accents, after the pastels of sunset fade beyond the bridge. Entertaining runs through the couple’s veins, one of which built a career in wine and hospitality, so within reach of the intimate dining table is a built-in bar with bountiful bottle storage. The mezzanine above serves the other partner’s dance and somatic practices with made-to-measure wall mirror and upholstered floor mats. Hidden away is the adjacent master suite, its billowy bed encircled by clean, concealed clothing storage for uncluttered repose. The downstairs guest bedroom is modest so its walls reflect the day’s changing light. A bespoke bed with contiguous floating nightstands, proportions inspired by Cadovius, offers peaceful respite. Bedside pendants were hand crafted by a local ceramicist, imparting an organic touch to otherwise sleek lines of wood and metalwork. Across the hall, work and rest coexist: an extra writing module from the shelving system and a classic Eames task chair make a workstation, while a custom-designed pull-out daybed accommodates naps and extra visitors. The freestanding 17’x19’ patio cover is supported by cedar and stone-wrapped columns for a thoroughly rustic aesthetic. Words by Wilson Hack The best architecture allows what has come before it to be seen and cared for while at the same time injecting something new, if not idealistic. Spartan at first glance, the interior of this stately apartment building, located on the iconic Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona, quickly begins to unfold as a calculated series of textures, visual artifacts and perfected aesthetic continuities. The client, a globe-trotting entrepreneur, selected Jeanne Schultz Design Studio for the remodel and requested that the space be reconditioned into a purposeful and peaceful landing pad. It was to be furnished simply using natural and sustainable materials. Schultz began by gently peeling back before adding only the essentials, resulting in a harmoniously restorative living space where darkness and light coexist and comfort reigns. The design was initially guided by the fireplace—from there a subtle injection of matching color extends up into the thick tiered molding and ceiling trim. “The most reckless patterns live here,” remarks Schultz, referring to the checkered green and white tiles, pink-Pollack-y stone and cast iron detailing. The millwork and warm wood wall panels devour the remainder of the living room, eliminating the need for unnecessary artwork. A curved living room chair by Kave Home punctuates playfully; its shape reveals its pleasant conformity to the human body and sits back, inviting rest and respite. “It’s good for all body types and sizes,” explains Schultz. The single sofa by Dareels is purposefully oversized, casual and inviting. A beige cover was added to soften the otherwise rectilinear edges. Additionally sourced from Dareels, a small yet centrally located side table anchors the space with its dark black wood texture, its visual weight on par with the larger pieces. The black bulbous free standing lamp converses directly with the antique chandelier above. Composed of individual black leather strips, it is seemingly harsh—yet its soft form is reminiscent of a spring tulip. The continuation of the color palette slips softly into the dining room where velvety green chairs sit delicately on a cascade array of pointed legs. The doors that lead out to the patio were sanded down and treated so that the original shape and form could be retained. Although the same green paint was used throughout, this set of doors speaks in darker tones alongside the acute and penetrating daylight. A few different shades of white paint were used throughout the space to add additional depth and embellish this shadowy texture. Specialty lights were added into the space to complement the existing overhead lighting. A wall sconce was added in the living room and extra lighting was placed in the kitchen. However, because of the existing barrel vaulted tile ceiling, sconces were placed on the walls rather than above to avoid penetrating the existing architecture.

Our approach was to maximize natural light, enhancing the open feel of the home. We achieved this through a palette of light shades on the walls and floors, creating a tranquil backdrop for home life. In the living room, simplicity meets sophistication. The sleek open kitchen flows seamlessly into the spacious living area. A unique feature of the layout is a mechanism that can transform the space from open to closed, providing both privacy and openness as desired. Natural materials prevail in the interior: wood brings warmth to each room, while the microcement floors add a touch of contemporary elegance. Elements of natural stone ground the space, bringing an organic touch to the modern home. The furniture is selected for both comfort and aesthetic appeal, with soft fabrics and a neutral color scheme. Instead of a traditional TV, we opted for a projector, adding a contemporary, cinematic feel to the living space. The fireplace has a curved metal wood shelf that is as functional as it is artistic. Upstairs is the master bedroom and a teen girl's bedroom. The master bedroom is a light-filled respite, with a feature wall of glass blocks elegantly separating it from the bathroom. This private nook is done in contemporary terracotta tones with dark hardware, creating a space that is simultaneously lush and relaxing. The teen girl's room, decorated in soft milky tones with delicate accents of light blue and light pink, is an airy and modern space for inspiration. Venturing between different imaginative worlds, Jimmy finds respite in a nomadic tent amongst his journeys. Like a homemade fort requires the assemblage of every sheet and towel in the house, active migration demands resourcefulness in the use of available materials. Leather, denim, canvas, and rope allow Jimmy to remain a rugged little boy as he discovers new territories, and is further encouraged to activate space via movable furniture. Roam on. Lively pops of orange and blue from the existing vintage wallpaper by Diego Giacometti for Clarence House and dispersed pillows and stuffed animals from Coral & Tusk set the adventurous mood for this little roamer’s room. We created a calming respite for our busy clients to retire to at the end of the day. This included soft velvets and upholstery with a palette of muted colours, and subtle hints of texture to add layers of refinement (such as the ribbed stone fireplace and caned wardrobe doors). Custom cabinetry provides plenty of storage for the Vancouver homeowners. It's hard to see the texture, but the walls were plastered as well.

A mid-century modern home that the clients wanted to convert to a transitional craftsman aesthetic to suit the neighborhood charm. The renovation included an exterior addition, exterior finishes & lighting, landscaping, new primary suite, media room, mudroom, guest bath, and adding a powder bath to increase the value of the home. Overall, the clients were inspired by cool relaxing tones and are seeking continuity and a place of respite in the interior design.

When a husband and wife team of professional botanists wanted to remodel their cramped, 1980s-era bathroom, we naturally looked to the forest for inspiration! With the expert help of Elite Construction Services Inc., we opened up this formerly segmented space (the toilet and washer/dryer were in a separate area from the shower/tub and vanity) to make it feel larger. A controlled, muted color scheme further enlarges the room by connecting all the planes, and serves as a neutral backdrop for a calming spa experience. All the materials speak to my clients’ love of nature. The custom wood vanity with tower and coordinating mirror frame are made so the grain lays in a refreshing horizontal pattern. The porcelain field tile is made to look like limestone with shadows of sediment and fossils. Other elements add to the feeling of a walk in the woods: long-format porcelain tiles of falling leaves cascade down a wall and blend into a stream of river stones that roll across the width of the space. The open, curbless shower with a hidden linear drain invites users for a cleansing respite. Tired of freezing bleak winters, this client decided to split her time between Michigan and Southern California. She bought this bright, airy home that epitomizes West Coast living, but the prior owner had not done anything to maintain the garden in many years. The grounds were filled with poorly placed and sickly-looking plants. The new homeowner wanted her garden to be a respite from subzero temperatures, filled year-round with flowers. Deciding what to keep, what to move and what to add, we came up with a plant pallet full of California and Mexico natives, and lots of succulents as well. We added over 1000 plants, filling this property with lush, year-round color that is undeniably Southern Californian.
