Secret Gardens has been developing this stunning harbourside garden over a number of years. A simple layout at water level provides a subtle foreground to the harbour view beyond. Simple, modern plant combinations draw from a simple but consistent colour palette. The main courtyard space is the highlight . A five metre high green wall and water wall provide the backdrop to a large banquet seat. The built in bbq, retractable ceiling, customised firepit and coffee table provide options for year round entertainment. Extensive soundproofing was incorporated into the boundary wall as well as behind the green wall to absorb noise from a neighbouring property.

The reveal: the bookcase swings open on a concealed pivot hinge to expose a white oak staircase hidden behind it. The pivot mechanism carries the full weight of the loaded shelves while keeping the door flush and silent when closed — the hardest part of any hidden door is making it disappear. Inspiration for a mid-sized traditional partial sun backyard formal garden in New York.

Clever interior design and impeccable craftsmanship were integral to this project, as we added a 10x10 addition to square up the back of the home, and turned a series of divided spaces into an open-concept plan. The homeowners wanted a big kitchen with an island large enough for their entire family, and an adjacent informal space to encourage time spent together. Custom built-ins help keep their TV, desk, and large book and game collections tidy. Upstairs, we reorganized the second and third stories to add privacy for the parents and independence for their growing kids. The new third floor master bedroom includes an ensuite and reading corner. The three kids now have their bedrooms together on the second floor, with an updated bathroom and a “secret” passageway between their closets! Gordon King Photography
